Resembling an oil painting seen from afar, Amalfi is awash with colour. From the rich greens, greys and browns of the sloping hills and soaring cliffs that frame this idyllic sea port, to the brightly coloured buildings that from its heart are sprinkled out from the town. Amidst this vision lies the Fontana hotel.
Situated in the heart of Amalfi, on Piazza Duomo, the Fontana hotel is ideally situated to explore the wonders and history this stunning town has to offer. With strong connections to the Orient, visible in the awe inspiring Dome of Sant’Andrea and the striking arches and columns of the Cloister of Paradise, Amalfi is said to be responsible for the introduction of coffee, carpets and paper to Italy.
The rooms at the Fontana hotel emit a distinct spacious and light airy feel, where the summer breeze from the sparkling sea below gently flutters through. Each room comes equipped with personal air-conditioning and heating so you can soak in the captivating scenes and surroundings in comfort. Also provided is Satellite TV, mini-bar, a direct phone line and en-suite bathrooms.
The Fontana hotel will strive to help you to optimise your stay in Amalfi. From the Grotto dello Smeraldo with its luminous waters to the discovering the astounding heritage in the countless museums, Amalfi has something for everyone. Staff are on hand to assist you where possible and reveal to you an Amalfi filled with mystery, beauty and an overwhelming history.

Ideally located between the main road and main piazza in Amalfi. We spent 3 nights from dec 29 and left New Year's Day. Our room had two balconies, one facing the piazza and the other facing the street. Cars driving by at all hours of the night make it difficult to sleep as do tourists talking loudly below. Traffic from the main road is also heard and felt as the building shakes when larger vehicles pass by. The New Year Eve's festivities held in the main piazza made it impossible to sleep till the music ended at 4am. The music is so loud all of the windows and shutters shake and rattle. The staff are pleasant and helpful. The continental breakfast is adequate. If location is your primary concern, this is the hotel for you as it is very central. If you'd prefer a quieter location, there are several small hotels tucked away in the side streets that all lead to the main piazza. Amalfi is a small town so every hotel is within walking distance of the main piazza. Inquire before booking whether there are festivities planned in the main piazza before booking as you may be inconvenienced during your stay. The room and private bathroom were very clean, with modern conveniences. The typically European beds are rather firm and may not suit every traveller. The air conditioner/heater worked very well since the weather does vary in the winter season. WIFI however is not available in the room and not included in the price of the room. WIFI is only available in the lobby and has a very limited range. Collapse

To say the least very disappointed. This room was booked by a tour guide on behalf of my partner and I. I would never have paid for this room if I saw what it looked like before hand. The lobby on first opinion is old and lack in character. The room looks like you have step back into the early 80's. was very disappointed on the style. Mattress hard, next to nothing pillows. Bed feels like will give out at any given moment. Forget about trying to have a shower. A bigger person would have trouble squeezing past the toilet. Also forget about wifi. The owners need to seriously give this place some love. If looking for a run down cheap hotel this is the place. Collapse
Only thing good is location

This is a tired hotel that the only thing it has to offer is a great location when visiting Amalfi. It is literally steps from both the bus station and ferry port. We were given a room facing the plaza Douro where we could look down and gaze at the travelers traversing the main drag in Amalfi. It was an amazing view. End of positives--- If you need wifi---forgetabouit! I even had problems with my cellular connection. Breakfast room was a joke. Tables stacked up against each other made it difficult to get to buffet table. They did have some very good croissants, and oj that wasn't watered down. It was the first breakfast place I saw where the ladies in charge had a prominently displayed tip jar. Low class for a low class place. Elevator in my opinion was risky, never had a clean ride. It jerked, didn't move, couldn't open the door, all in all almost as risky as the bus ride to Ravello, but that's another story! Tip to the owners-- offer free wifi to your guests and figure out a way to make your breakfast area more habitable. You have a great location-- right now that's it! Collapse

It has taken me around two months to put this review together; I didn't want to be too harsh but I think people should know what to expect. This establishment was the greatest disappointment of our month-long Italian trip; I was so excited to have got a reservation and was so looking forward to staying but have to say this was the worst hotel on our trip. To begin, the room (suite) was right off the dining room so quite noisy at certain times of the day but nothing compared to the racket outside from the very busy road. We could not have the balcony door open during our three night stay. The suite, whilst of an excellent size, was in need of an update and the bathroom, in need of a very good clean with mould around the very old shower. Breakfast was very average and once again, the dining room is in need of a good makeover. I think this is a family run business and they obviously do not want to put any money into it; just relying on the fact that the people will come (even if they won't come back!). Memo to the two ladies who make coffee in the morning : Do not be rude about guests only knowing one Italian word (Gracie); just be thankful they are pleasant enough to say it. Remember that some people do understand Italian ! Collapse

Good location close to the pier, bus service and local restaurants. We had visited the Amalfi Coast the year before and chose this location for easy access to transportation, this is a beautiful old hotel with simple furnishings and everything you will need. It was very affordable due to the time of year we traveled. We had a large room in the front of the building with a spectacular sea view. A simp,e breakfast was provided with enough choices for anyone. Internet is accessible in the breakfast room only. Collapse
