Resembling an oil painting seen from afar, Amalfi is awash with colour. From the rich greens, greys and browns of the sloping hills and soaring cliffs that frame this idyllic sea port, to the brightly coloured buildings that from its heart are sprinkled out from the town. Amidst this vision lies the Fontana hotel.
Situated in the heart of Amalfi, on Piazza Duomo, the Fontana hotel is ideally situated to explore the wonders and history this stunning town has to offer. With strong connections to the Orient, visible in the awe inspiring Dome of Sant’Andrea and the striking arches and columns of the Cloister of Paradise, Amalfi is said to be responsible for the introduction of coffee, carpets and paper to Italy.
The rooms at the Fontana hotel emit a distinct spacious and light airy feel, where the summer breeze from the sparkling sea below gently flutters through. Each room comes equipped with personal air-conditioning and heating so you can soak in the captivating scenes and surroundings in comfort. Also provided is Satellite TV, mini-bar, a direct phone line and en-suite bathrooms.
The Fontana hotel will strive to help you to optimise your stay in Amalfi. From the Grotto dello Smeraldo with its luminous waters to the discovering the astounding heritage in the countless museums, Amalfi has something for everyone. Staff are on hand to assist you where possible and reveal to you an Amalfi filled with mystery, beauty and an overwhelming history.

It was a nice quiet hotel, but right in the middle of the action. There is a big staircase which you have to climb with your luggage to get to the entrance. Inside, there is an elevator. We were hiking, so we were glad that the people at the desk were knowledgeable and could answer our questions about the terrain and local bus schedules. Collapse
A good budget hotel

We stayed here for a week and liked the place. Our room was big, with a small balcony & a sea view. It was a pretty simple sort of room, and a bit dated, but everything was clean and worked. The shower had great pressure and there was always plenty of hot water. Breakfasts were typical of continental hotels: fresh rolls, croissants, meats, cheeses, fruit, yoghurt, etc. The staff on the front desk were very helpful to us & the location of the hotel, right in the heart of Amalfi, is great with buses and ferries just minutes away. Yes, it can be noisy, but once you've shut the double-glazed windows & shutters it's fine (& we're light sleepers). We'd certainly use the hotel again if we came back to Amalfi. Collapse
Not bad for a last minute choice.

My fiancé and I spontaneously booked this hotel on the way to Amalfi from Pompeii. After driving through the mountains (scary to drive but amazing view) and hitting dark, we decided to stop in Amalfi for the night to stay safe. The room we got was only 70 euro for the night. If we were staying here for the whole trip we took, I'd be very disappointed, but since they were kind enough to take us last minute, we can't really complain. Our room had 2 single beds pushed together which made sleeping quite uncomfortable and the shower head sprayed water over the shower door all through the bathroom and also popped off when I tried to increase the water pressure. A bonus was the balcony we got overlooking the little square and a beautiful cathedral. Please keep in mind that this was a budget room, so I'm not sure of how the other rooms were. Collapse
Great location if you can sleep with noise

Ideally located between the main road and main piazza in Amalfi. We spent 3 nights from dec 29 and left New Year's Day. Our room had two balconies, one facing the piazza and the other facing the street. Cars driving by at all hours of the night make it difficult to sleep as do tourists talking loudly below. Traffic from the main road is also heard and felt as the building shakes when larger vehicles pass by. The New Year Eve's festivities held in the main piazza made it impossible to sleep till the music ended at 4am. The music is so loud all of the windows and shutters shake and rattle. The staff are pleasant and helpful. The continental breakfast is adequate. If location is your primary concern, this is the hotel for you as it is very central. If you'd prefer a quieter location, there are several small hotels tucked away in the side streets that all lead to the main piazza. Amalfi is a small town so every hotel is within walking distance of the main piazza. Inquire before booking whether there are festivities planned in the main piazza before booking as you may be inconvenienced during your stay. The room and private bathroom were very clean, with modern conveniences. The typically European beds are rather firm and may not suit every traveller. The air conditioner/heater worked very well since the weather does vary in the winter season. WIFI however is not available in the room and not included in the price of the room. WIFI is only available in the lobby and has a very limited range. Collapse

It has taken me around two months to put this review together; I didn't want to be too harsh but I think people should know what to expect. This establishment was the greatest disappointment of our month-long Italian trip; I was so excited to have got a reservation and was so looking forward to staying but have to say this was the worst hotel on our trip. To begin, the room (suite) was right off the dining room so quite noisy at certain times of the day but nothing compared to the racket outside from the very busy road. We could not have the balcony door open during our three night stay. The suite, whilst of an excellent size, was in need of an update and the bathroom, in need of a very good clean with mould around the very old shower. Breakfast was very average and once again, the dining room is in need of a good makeover. I think this is a family run business and they obviously do not want to put any money into it; just relying on the fact that the people will come (even if they won't come back!). Memo to the two ladies who make coffee in the morning : Do not be rude about guests only knowing one Italian word (Gracie); just be thankful they are pleasant enough to say it. Remember that some people do understand Italian ! Collapse
