We booked a week's stay in Oct- Nov 2017 at Hotel Florida after arriving in Lisbon at a furnished apartment rental and finding it unacceptable. The choice of hotel was essentially random. However, everything went right at Hotel Florida. We loved the place. At an advance booking rate, rather than the rack rate was we were forced by circumstance to pay, the hotel would offer great value for money. First, location: It's right on the Praça de Marques de Pombal, an major square in the commercial center of the city. Two Metro lines stop at Praça de Marques de Pombal, and it's a very pleasant 20-minute walk into the older area of the City alongside the River. The Hotel is furnished in a Golden Age of Hollywood theme. Our room 817, was the James Stewart Room. Not being much of a film buff, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the ambiance. The room was large, quiet, and spotlessly clean. The bed was excellent, and the furnishings at least adequate. Built in 1941, the Hotel has been maintained and updated very well indeed. The breakfast buffet was a well above average version of the usual Portuguese hotel breakfast buffet. For instance, the cold cuts were of a better quality than usual, with greater selection. It offered a greater than usual variety of hot items as well. The staff did a fabulous job of keeping the buffet topped up, fresh, and clean. The hotel is a bit too small to accommodate large tour groups. Hence one never felt swamped by 40-odd sheep being herded by their tour guide into the breakfast room all at once. Hotel staff were highly competent and communicated well. We needed a taxi at 2:30 a.m. when we checked out in order to catch a very early flight. No problem whatever. The bar is small but adequate. The bartender did a very nice job and was always helpful. This is far from the greatest hotel we've ever stayed at. However it offers very good value for money, and we had a totally enjoyable stay. Isabel and Rodriquez are hallmarks of hospitality and are always a pleasure to see on every visit. The adjacent "Great American Disaster" restaurant is a bit of a hidden gem as well. Unbeatable for attention and hospitality. Collapse

Just returned from a weekend break with my wife at this hotel. Read fairly mixed reviews before travelling, however shouldnt have worried. Great central location, literally across the road from the Marques de Pombal metro. We actually used the metro from the airport to the hotel which was fairly easy to do & cheap. Took about 30 mins. Nice reception area with a warm welcome. Quirky design - all rooms based on different Hollywood icons. We were in the 'Jack Nicholson', with film posters on the wall. Room comfortable and clean. Tea / coffee making facilities, unfortunately never had milk supplied, The weekend weather was unusually hot for late October so the AC was much needed. As previous reviews mentioned, the breakfast was a highlight. Catered for all tastes. Fresh orange and coffee. Together with a great view over the square. We had a table by the panoramic windows every morning. Not much choice in the way of bars or restaurants close to the hotel, however didnt really bother us as we used the metro to travel down to the Restauradores or Baixa Chiado districts where there was plenty of choices to eat & drink. Also we used to stroll down the Avenida Da Liberdade next to the hotel in to the central area which took a leisurely 25 mins or so. Dotted along here were little bars which we relaxed with a beer or 2 listening to the music most evenings. From here we walked through to the Rua Augusta which was full of restaurants and pastry shops selling the fantastic 'pastel da nata's' (custard tarts) which we tested on many occasions ! One morning we queued for the no 28 tram in Martim Moniz for over an hour, thankfully in the shade. We got a seat but it was packed so we couldnt really see out. Would suggest an early start if you want to do this. The tram took us to Alfama which is a lovely part of Lisbon with beautiful views. To return to the airport, the hotel booked us a taxi which cost a reasonable 15 Euros. All in all, together with the fantastic weather, a great weekend. Collapse

The hotel is located just off the Marquis de Pombal Square and Avenida da Liberdade, the latter being a drop dead gorgeous street offering many high-end shops. it is directly across the street from a subway station that is only 2 or 3 stops from the center of town, or you can simply walk it in 20-25 minutes (and it is a beautiful walk). The hotel itself is very comfortable (excellent a/c in particular, and a very good breakfast featuring fresh squeezed orange juice) and the staff is very friendly. Special kudos to the front desk manager, Mr. Diego Silva, who was very helpful and nice to us. Collapse

We stayed at this hotel for a couple of days and booked two rooms for our stay, one of which was quite large and full of light whereas we had to switch the other one twice. The first room was very small and timid (and depressive! It had posters of scary movies hung on the wall and it was making you go crazy!) and the other one had a water leakage. The rooms were quite old and lacked some renovation. Bathrooms were small, offering no bathroom kits - only a shower cap and a shower gel that was empty the first day. The breakfast was quite good though: it offered a beautiful view of the city and a good variety of foods as well. The reception staff was extremely friendly and nice - we got to talk to them a lot about switching the rooms and other small details and they happened to be very friendly and helpful, always ready to solve your problem. If you need a transfer to the airport, just contact them and they will organize the transfer with a proper car and at a good cost. Overall, this was not a bad choice considering that it had all the amenities and a great location. Collapse
