I couldn't have been more impressed by the Elms - it has a 3 star rating, but we have stayed in many 5 star hotels which are not as good. Wonderful facilities, so family friendly with great attention to detail. The children wanted to stay a fortnight, but our one night seemed more like a short holiday as it was so relaxing. We will definitely return - one of the best hotels we have stayed at in the uk. Collapse

Great for families - our daughters loved the Bears Den and we appreciated the babysitting service. Beautiful building and gardens. Adventure playground in need of being updated and some carpets in communal areas could be replaced. Fairy trail and teddy bear trail were great, and our daughter enjoyed meeting the hotel dog and cat. Room brilliant for our needs (Emblem), and all relevant baby and toddler equipment supplied. We were able to get hot and cold milk whenever needed. Spa very nice (thermal area small) but swimming lessons were a bit disruptive and I would have planned our swimming tines differently had I known about them. Food and drink very tasty but expensive (we stayed on a tariff that included a food allowance per day). Overall we enjoyed it and would return / recommend it, addressing these few minor niggles would make a big difference too. Collapse

One night stay on my way back from the Peak District. Underwhelmed by the experience. Decoration is tired and barely believable as "4 star" (good salons on the ground floor, though). My room was in what evidently used to be the "servants' quarters", with corridors, doors and carpets not on par. *No lift*, which was entirely unexpected. Room furniture also tired. One table lamp did not work. No shampoo or shower gel. Doors of service rooms in the corridors (for cleaning etc.) always opened, again not my expectation of four star level. The room was, overall, welcoming and the mattress pretty good. Internet with free Wi-Fi also a plus. However, even with a "special offer" of £85 I feel the 3 out of five rating is fairly generous. Had I paid more it would have been 2 starts for sure. I will not be coming back. Collapse

Bought on Treatwell site as a birthday spa day treat. Arrived between 9-9.30. Unsure as to how to enter the spa so went through the Hotel main door. Gentleman seated at desk rather unwelcoming... when I asked if I had the right place he pointed unsmiling "just go through the door to the glass building" not the most pleaseant of welcomes. The lady in the spa building was very polite and showed me the venue. This appeared rather disjointed with the relaxation room and treatments upstairs. She showed me the sauna / steam room/ shower experience area. I was confused as the pool area was not shown other than indicating the door to access. I went to the changing room to be greeted by 4 or five mothers and babies!+ playpen. I proceeded to the pool area to find it Was full of parents and young children and there was a "swimming class" underway with a member of staff fully clothed interacting with mothers and babies. There were no available seats to at least chill out and read my kindle. I went to the chill out room(alone no one else there) for an hour and attempted to access the pool again. Still the same .. the noise was defenning. I went to the steam room that houses a min of 6 at the most yet again. On returning to the pool I gave up as it was the same as before. I went to the empty relaxation room again until my mini facial was due. This was the most relaxing part of the day. Made me think why didn't I just have a facial local to my home? I had a spa day pass until 4pm. My afternoon tea was booked for 2pm. By this time it was 1pm and I couldn't take anymore as the pool was still the same. I asked if my afternoon tea could be brought forward? The lady I spoke to stated she would have to check if it was ok with chef?! At any rate I would have left anyway. Afternoon scones (which were very good)was duely served. However I had a lady with two children in the cafe .... one a baby sat to my left and a gentleman with a very little baby sat to the right of my table. They proceeded to have a discussion across my table in regard to feeding issues /nappyissues/ sleep issues etc etc. I appreciate that The Elms promotes itself as a 'family friendly" hotel/ venue. However I would question as to whether it should promote itself as a day spa where individual single( i.e. As someone alone wanting some time out) customers pay good money for peace and quiet and relaxation. I left the Elms before 2pm. A very disappointing and not a relaxing experience apart from the mini facial which lasted less than 45 minutes. This should not be promoted as a day spa offering a luxury experience. How can you accommodate guests from the hotel / regular local family's with children using it as a local swimming pool and those purchasing a day do a experience. The venue is too small to accommodate and cater for all needs. Collapse

My mum & I booked our stay through secret escapes for a relaxing spa break. A week before our stay we were contacted to check whether we wanted to book an evening meal for the Friday and Saturday of our stay. When I informed the lady I would need to check with my mum, as I was travelling with her, I was advised we had been booked into a standard double as part of a package which i confirmed wouldn't be a problem, however on arrival, she had informed receiption of whom had changed our booking to a twin room which was lovely of her to of done this. The staff are freindly, and efficient, however the food was very standard, with both our evening meal and breakfast being a disappointment. We were glad we decided to eat out on the Saturday night. The spa facilities clean and the treatments relaxing. This is very much a family hotel, with lots to do for children, which had we of known would of opted for a different hotel. Although we wouldn't return ourselves, I would recommend the hotel for couples with young children. Collapse

I had a lovely relaxation break here last month, it's a fantastic property, pairing both the relaxed elegance of a country house hotel with modern spa facilities. I have to say though it was the little touches that made the stay memorable, from the fantastic welcome I received from Jane on reception to the hand written card in my room from Martin the General manager the overall feel was that of being welcomed into someone's beautiful home. A home that happened to have the fantastic Brookes restaurant serving classic but delicious British dishes. It's a lovely place to settle down and hideaway for a few days and I've recommended it to friends since returning. Collapse
