I couldn't have been more impressed by the Elms - it has a 3 star rating, but we have stayed in many 5 star hotels which are not as good. Wonderful facilities, so family friendly with great attention to detail. The children wanted to stay a fortnight, but our one night seemed more like a short holiday as it was so relaxing. We will definitely return - one of the best hotels we have stayed at in the uk. Collapse

The utter disappointment we felt after checking in to our "luxury hotel break" soon changed to a feeling of annoyance. We had booked through the Luxury Family Hotel chain with whom we have enjoyed many fabulous stays in the past and we were looking forward to relaxing, safe in their knowledgeable hands. It wasn't long after we checked in that we discovered the Elms has recently changed hands, presumably to the owners of the 3 extremely ostentatious luxury vehicles parked right in front of the hotel (private number plates confirmed our suspicions) which left us to park round the back and carry our luggage through the rain to the hotel. Our room was tiny... if we had brought the cat we wouldn't have been able to swing it. We are a family of 4 with 2 teenage daughters and having tripped over the girls, the luggage and the free standing air conditioning unit one too many times we asked to be moved. Sarah was fabulous and very kindly helped us out... thanks Sarah. The hotel is very worn and in dire need of updating but the shabby chic look doesn't bother us. The wifi situation however is intolerable. Even the staff were joking about it... not very reassuring. The food was pretty good in general although amount of flies throughout the hotel was truly grim, I've seen less in a slaughterhouse. This completely put us off eating anything from the breakfast buffet. The bar, often akin to the Mary Celeste, seemed to be stocked from Aldi with very few notable brands on offer. Bar snacks anyone? My husband spotted a jar of dusty chilli crackers behind the till, with flies on it. We did try to play cards but the tables were too sticky. Most of the staff were lovely. Some are just uninformed and one in particular was rude and unhelpful. Currently the hotel appears to be a rudderless ship. The staff are in desperate need of direction and instruction on the finer points of luxury service and whilst the staff were clearly doing their best this lack of direction resulted in a service that was chaotic, haphazard and at times utterly non existent. Apparently there was an F&B manager, somewhere, but we never saw him/her and they were not apparent during the busy dinner service on Saturday night which hosted both diners and hotel guests. All this left us feeling very deflated and with the bill coming to over £1,000 for 2 nights we felt robbed. Even the children couldn't wait to leave. Collapse

This was our third stay at The Elms. When we booked it was still part of the Luxury Family Hotels chain, which specializes in family-friendly country house hotels. We've stayed at several of these and really loved them. A week before we arrived, The Elms was purchased by a local businessman, and is in the process of changing its focus. Soon it will not allow under 15s. As a result, the character of the hotel is shifting away from what our family wants. Some things at The Elms are terrific. The food is outstanding - every meal we ate there was sublime. As long as they keep their chef and menu, I'd highly recommend the food. The hotel itself is a lovely Queen Anne building, very English country house. The staff are helpful and attentive. But there are problems. First, the change of emphasis away from family friendly is a real disappointment. It means we won't be returning. Clearly the emphasis will be on spa retreats for people in the local area. I would not travel to go to The Elms. Second, there are some real weaknesses. The spa itself is feeling very tired. There are missing tiles in the changing rooms and a generally run-down decor. The massage treatments that my wife and I had were very poor, feeling rote and inattentive. My wife was actually left with a sore back from the inexpert treatment! If they want to make this a spa resort, they desperately need better facilities and staff. The hotel has free WiFi, but it is simply appalling. The connections are badly overloaded and drops continually. If you get 5 minutes of straight connection you are lucky, and it can take 20 minutes to reconnect. When you are connected you get a pathetic dribble of data. Reminds me of the bad old days of 3600 baud modems, Completely worthless. I hope the new owner can invest to upgrade the facilities. There is much to like about The Elms, and it could be a super place with some improvements. But, sadly, it is not for us, since we have a family and it is clear we will not be welcome there in the future. Collapse

First the the very important plus point. The staff were great and the service overall excellent. Now a bit of what everybody else seems to have said. The hotel ,the drive up to,the grounds are wonderful but when you get close to the building you see it is in need of care and attention. So too of the interior. it's very tired in fact a fair bit of the furniture in the public rooms has "had it!" So much potential and it will be interesting what the new owner does with it BUT it needs a chunk of money spending on it both in the public rooms and the hotel rooms. Currently it's nowhere near a 5 star probably rating at about 3.5 stars only. I will review the restaurant seperately. Collapse

We celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary at The Elms this weekend and it was perfect. The hotel were amazing at coordinating our 15 sets of guests, childcare requirements, spa treatments and food arrangements. The food is excellent, and the private dining room where we held our evening event was the perfect setting for a memorable occasion. The staff helping us organise the event did so efficiently and it meant everything went very smoothly in the months leading up to the weekend, and over the weekend itself. Most importantly, the Bear's Den crèche is an incredible facility. We all booked our 2 hours of (included in the price) childcare per day and the adults could then relax for a couple of hours and enjoy the grounds or spa, safe in the knowledge that the wonderful nursery staff were taking the very best care of our children. The children loved it. We also used both the baby listening and the babysitting services extensively this weekend, and the staff were incredibly accommodating and a key part of the success of our evening, as all parents could really relax knowing the children were safe and well looked after. Everyone is so impressed with The Elms: the setting is beautiful, rooms comfortable, all staff across the hotel so wonderful with the children and helpful to tired/busy parents. We will all be back again as soon as possible! Thank you! Collapse
