I couldn't have been more impressed by the Elms - it has a 3 star rating, but we have stayed in many 5 star hotels which are not as good. Wonderful facilities, so family friendly with great attention to detail. The children wanted to stay a fortnight, but our one night seemed more like a short holiday as it was so relaxing. We will definitely return - one of the best hotels we have stayed at in the uk. Collapse

We held my daughters birthday party here and it was seamless throughout, my only issue would be that the food portioning could be altered/ more varied for a children's party. They've coined a niche in the market here, the Crèche team entertain and feed the children whilst Mums and Dads can sit and enjoy a coffee and a chat knowing the children are having fun and are in completely safe hands. There is music, face painting, party games and food. I booked it with Emily who was great from start to finish. Crèche girls and waiting staff are all friendly and helpful and The building and grounds are beautiful. Collapse

Not luxury (but has the price tag of it!) - needs some serious changes

Really not great. Staff-wise pretty lack-lustre, thought it may be as it was the Sunday after half-term but according to friends that had also been in the last few months this was not an isolated event! The communal toys in the boxes were messy and few. It felt like we had to ask for everything... can we have a high chair please at lunch? Do you have any communal toys? Is there a place for the children to play? Can we have a tour? A lot of things to be fair are written in the hotel book in the room but those with young children know that the chance of sitting down and reading anything is pretty slim! We had the 3 bed suite - this was great in terms of a room each for the children . There were flies (dead and live) in one bedroom and near all windows on arrival - again - we had to ask - please can housekeeping sort this out? TV remote didnt work great, Toilet flush pretty pants, its an old building so I understand that shabby chic is part of it (I live in a house like this myself) but this is not good enough at the price, and definitely not without an explanation like 'the toilet doesn't flush that well as its a quirky old system - please try this and let us know if any problems'. Communication was the main problem. Help with bags occurred only on prompting which as a Mum leaving the hotel alone with 2 young children again wasn't ideal... it was pretty obvious I was struggling and the place was very quiet so that wasn't an excuse. Lots of meetings were being held at reception (rather than in a separate area) which wasn't very relaxing as a guest - as you had to interrupt the meeting and were made to feel like an intruder rather than a guest. Food was ok at dinner, club sandwich at lunch was rubbish - child's lunch arrived piping hot as did the children's hot chocolate (which is just ridiculous in a kid-friendly hotel). Pool area lovely. Creche (with parental supervision) open (so we could all play there) according to paperwork but closed for the whole afternoon for cleaning on the day we were there! Park area - no in great condition toys-wise - not great quality swings or seesaws etc - no babyseat on swing but also swing not great for the over 5s either. On arrival laundry bags everywhere and carpet needed a good clean.... Not good. We have been to Martinhal Portugal (8/10) and Watergate Cornwall (9.5/10) Id give the elms 3/10 and wont be going back. Beautiful building in lovely grounds - owners need to sort out staff and inject some life and love and organisation into the place! Collapse

I booked a two day stay here from my wife's birthday with a 16 month old child following a recommendation from a colleague and I must say I was thoroughly disappointed. Upon booking I received numerous calls to confirm if I needed a cot bed, steriliser and nappy bin even though I requested these when booking. When we arrived, there was no one at the reception desk to greet up and eventually two people turned up without any introductions. Our room was not ready but we did arrive prior to check in and we're directed to the bar for a spot of lunch. We ordered from the children's menu as the bistro menu wasn't to our liking. We were notified of our room being ready in advance of check in and were shown to one in the house which was then changed because it had just been painted and the smell was over-powering. We had the Duchess during the stay instead which was satisfactory. Nothing else was offered in the way of orientation or timings for dinner, creche facilities, etc. I unloaded the car and made a few trips up to the room with our luggage and decides to explore the house and what it had to offer, deciding that we would use the pool facilities at that time. The changing rooms were clean but only a few lockers were actually usable. The pool area was tidy and quiet, with only a few old floats and no toys for our child. Nevertheless we had a nice family swim until a couple emerged from the jacuzzi sheepishly with the male trying to contain his fella - very inappropriate for a family swimming area especially with a child around. We eventually went back to the room so our daughter could have a nap and we planned dinner. The menu could do with a revamp as there was limited choice and we ended up having sandwiches back in our room that evening. There was a lot of noise at night with people laughing and shouting near our room which was very inconsiderate but it didn't last long. Breakfast the following morning was not great, the pastries looked like they had been left our for a while, fruit salad was empty, and our toast was offered without any butter. The cooked breakfast was fine nothing special. Our daughter used the Bear Den, it want busy and staff came across well but we were called after 5 minutes of leaving her as she was upset and they advised that they don't settle the children if upset - what's the point of this service then? We collected her made out way to the garden cafe for a hot drink and then left the hotel. In theory, what the hotel is trying to offer seems good on paper but in actual fact they fail. The services need to be revamped and menu could do with some more choices. It was a disappointing stay, and for the money there are far better places to stay. Collapse

Rare to find a hotel that caters for parents and small children so well! The luxury of a country house with roaring fires, great food and spa facilities combined with a fab crèche, high tea for Little ones and everything you could possibly need for baby and children from nappy bins, bottle sterilisation and welly boots in all sizes ready by the back door for exploration of the grounds and the fairy trail.
