I couldn't have been more impressed by the Elms - it has a 3 star rating, but we have stayed in many 5 star hotels which are not as good. Wonderful facilities, so family friendly with great attention to detail. The children wanted to stay a fortnight, but our one night seemed more like a short holiday as it was so relaxing. We will definitely return - one of the best hotels we have stayed at in the uk. Collapse

We have just returned from a 2 night visit to "The Elms". Our room was delightful and the Staff very friendly. We had a meal in the Restaurant on the first night and although it is quite expensive it was delicious and obviously care is taken over the dishes. Breakfast on both mornings was superb with a choice of 16 hot dishes as well as the home made bread and fresh fruit. The only criticism was the price of the drinks, especially the glasses of wine - oh dear!! Collapse

My family and I attended a family wedding here. Not wishing to detract from the happy couple’s day, I do feel the need to comment on the bar and the bar prices. On a positive, the food and service for the wedding breakfast was excellent, and second to none. But the bar prices left a very sour taste. There was only one draught beer (& nothing else was on draught) and that was £4.75 a pint. I know hotels charge more than local pubs, but the hotel was making a serious profit I’m sure on the wedding itself. Two pints and a small wine having a bill of £17 is daylight robbery. To add insult to injury the draught beer had all gone by 8.30pm. I should add this wasn’t a drunken brawl of a wedding, so that - combined with the extortionate price - meant that beer wasn’t being consumed in excessive quantities. So the draught was all gone early (check the comment from the end of August re the beer contract) and small bottles of Peroni at £4.70 a throw was pretty much all that was left. Soft drinks didn’t fare much better, with a pint of Coke costing £5.50 and a pot of tea costing £10.50. That’s a pot of boiling water with a couple of tea bags. Pure 99.99% profit. Dick Turpin wore a mask, but not so staff at The Elms. I felt the hotel had guests over a barrel. A gold plated, diamond encrusted barrel. The grounds are beautiful, the food was excellent, but they need to improve drink prices and choice. Collapse

It's a good drive from where I live but I have driven past the Elms many times and thought must try it. Lovely setting, ample parking and easy to find. We made a reservation on line, but nobody to greet us in first instance? We were taken to the bar to consider the menu and order drinks. Having placed our orders we went to the dining room which was nicely decorated. It somehow lacked any atmosphere? We were served by some young girls who are learning the skills of service but they need a little more tutorage and need to develop more confidence which comes with practice and guidance. The food was nicely presented and good sized portions. I went with the muscles which were very good. Then the lamb, this was disappointing, too fatty and a poor cut. My wife went for the potted shrimp which was good and then the beef which she said was very good indeed. Deserts looked good and I went for the coffee and petifours but it was a single cup and a small selection of chocolate and jelly, a cafetière would have been better for the £5 charge. Look this is a lovely setting but when you charge 10% service charge you expect good service for that, and when you spend £77 on lunch with two glasses of wine I felt the experience was a bit underwhelming ? It could be quite special but it needs a bit more sparkle in my view, an emphasis on top quality fare and a stronger management of the customer experience. I hope that is not too harsh but this venue has so much potential. Would I go back? Sure because it can do better.. Collapse

We came here for my better half's birthday. Check-in was very easy, we had spa treatments booked so as the room wasn't ready (We arrived early), we went straight to the spa. Jane on reception runs a very good team always happy to help and always smiling. The Spa is lovely and child friendly, as is the whole hotel. Very clean great facilities. Beware for the Spa bar prices though, they are very steep! (2 wines, 4 soft drinks £43) We also brought our dogs which could have stayed in the room but we felt better off in the car. The room for the four of us was a little small and very very hot. Extra fans were supplied but still very hot, it was the hottest day of the year though. Eating - The food in both the Spa and restaurant was excellent really well presented and cooked thank you Chef. Yasmin who waited our Spa table was also excellent. (Our waitress in the evening in the family restaraunt could do with a little more training on customer relations/tableside manner - enough said). Sarah in the restaurant was excellent though. Breakfast was rather slow. We had to go and ask for coffee/tea/menu etc shame it wasn't a bit slicker. Lots of children facilities which we didn't use, at the same time a lot of peace and tranquillity for those without kids. There are things like tennis & croquet (they can provide the equipment), fairy trail, bug hotels alternatively cream tea by the fountain in the garden We would love to come back here again. Collapse

The Elms is a beautiful hotel surrounded by fantastic grounds. The hotel is part of the luxury family-friendly group and you feel this at every point during your stay. The rooms are large and comfy with a beautiful view of the grounds. The hotel felt small and intimate and all the staff were really friendly and made an effort to get to know us and our children. The restaurants are lovely and the food is fantastic, when I couldn't find a vegan option the waiter simply asked the chef who created my own delicious option like it was no hassle at all (always the mark of a good restaurant). The children's menu is very child-friendly and even my fussy toddler found a delicious flatbread pizza that she liked. They get carrot and cucumber sticks as a side which she really enjoyed. Children's tea is served earlier and they really have planned everything to ensure that your stay focuses on children's needs and the needs of their parents! All the baby paraphernalia you could ever want is provided in your room including toilet seat (or potty for smaller ones), cot, bottles, everything you could possibly need. They have a baby listening service that is trustworthy and reliable. There are activities for children like the fairy trail and the badger walk, where you explore the hotel and grounds finding fairy doors and hidden badgers. My daughter really enjoyed this and they get a certificate at the end. The hotel had a flock of doves outside that my daughter was just fascinated by! She liked to watch them being fed. The pool was lovely and clean and the outdoor hot tub a fabulous place to relax. Couldn't recommend enough and can't wait to come back! I usually sum up my best and worst bits but I honestly didn't have a single complaint the whole time we were there - I'm just sorry it's taken me so long to get around to giving this hotel the praise it deserves!
