The Edward Hotel is a grade 2 listed conversion of three terraced town houses. The hotel offers a blend of personality and professionalism, a distinct mix of quality and value for money. The emphasis is upon accommodation rather than fine dining and also upon peace and quiet. The location, out of earshot of the city clubs and pubs, is another bonus.
There are 25 smart ensuite bedrooms with High Definition TV, with 140 digital satellite TV/radio channels, and free WiFi. The Lounge retains the Victorian open fireplace and parquet flooring. Chilly winter nights can be kept at bay by the crackle and wood smoke from the log fire. The lounge closes with the bar around 11pm. The hotel dining room gallery has a theme. The pictures rattle the brain cells of many sleepy breakfast goers. Help is at hand with the cryptic and other clues on dining tables. For those that crack the theme another more challenging brain teaser awaits, which has been solved without aid, only twice.
The Edward Hotel also has a mature secluded garden and provides an ideal background for photos. There is a surprising amount of birdlife. Watch out for the sparrow hawks that nest at the hospital. In the summer you can take breakfast on the patio.

If you are a local history buff, this is the place to say. The owner/manager, St. John, is training to be a guide in the city center, and he has a map marked with interesting sites such as the well-preserved medieval coaching inns that he will provide to interested guests. He will also outline a walking tour of the city for you based on how much time you have. In a way, he acts like a cultural concierge and stays current on all the area has to offer. The office contains a kind of library of Gloucester's history and includes pamphlets you can take away with you. The walls are decorated with informative pictures of key events in the town stretching back to the Roman era. It's worth it to take half an hour or so to read through them to get oriented before heading out to the main tourist draws, such as the cathedral. After going through the Gloucester Folk Life Museum, I actually found this hotel more informative. The rooms are historical in another way. The hotel advertises its individuality, and it has definitely escaped the current trend to update everything and to make it look like a shipping container made out of slate. My room was like a set from "Three's Company," and I expected Mr. Roper to knock on my door at any moment. Will your room be harvest gold, avocado or Africana rusty red? Will it have portraits of go-go dancers or woman warriors on its walls? Finding out is part of the surprise in staying here. I snapped some shots of the wall ornaments (a dust broom that might double as some kind of fertility fetish), and my friends agreed it was groovy and wanted to stay there, in the comfort and nostalgia of the 70s. The room itself was spacious and included a useful desk for business travelers. Generous hot breakfast with veggie options and a short walk from the train station. Recommended for women traveling alone since it is centrally located and in a safe area. Collapse

Hotel was on main road, but if you come into the town, is easily missed as the name is painted on the wall out of sight from that direction! Once inside, it was pleasant enough, but the owner/manager was not particularly friendly or welcoming. I was told to find my room whilst he dealt with other guests. When I found my room, it was fine, if a little warm, even with the window open. There was plenty of tea and coffee on hand - and a packet of biscuits! No evening food was offered, so I enquired about nearby restaurants. There is a good selection within a 15-20 minute walk, catering for all tastes. I had a problem getting the TV to work and a phone call later I was given hurried instructions on what to do to get a picture. It seemed overly complicated to sort! The room was serviceable and, for me, a bonus of a bath. The on site car park is quite limited and I had the last remaining space, along side a wall. The bed was comfortable, although the room was very hot all night, as there was no a/c or fan available. Sleeping on top of the bed was the only option for me! In the morning, the breakfast was very good, with a choice of cereals, juices and cooked items. The young staff were helpful and efficient. The owner/manager came into the dining area, but offered no greeting or acknowledgement of guests existence. Overall, an average experience in an average hotel at an average price - you get what you pay for! Collapse

We needed an Hotel that was within walking distance of the city and had private parking. This Hotel fitted the bill perfectly. The welcome, although polite, could have been more friendly. The double room, which was at the back Rm 21), was on the small side but we could mange for 2 nights, Tea/Coffee making facilities and TV & WiFi. Very peaceful. The en-suite looked fairly new, although the toilet did not always finish flushing without some help. The Breakfast was the stand out. Cooked breakfast both days and very well cooked. Waitresses were both friendly, polite and helpful. The Hotel needs updating in places and indeed one of the bedrooms was being refitted during our stay. May not stay there again but would recommend anyone on a short stay Collapse

My requirements were a hotel in walking distance of the centre of the town with parking and, as such, this hotel fitted the bill. The parking was around the rear of the hotel from which entry to the building required using a doorbell. My room was a very good size, albeit with road noise, with the room being situated at the front of the hotel on the main road. The room was extremely warm (my stay coinciding with a warm spell) even though the window was open throughout my stay. In fact, because it was a ground floor room, the window would only open so far such that, even when the outside weather was cooler, the room remained very warm resulting in some lack of sleep. The en-suite bathroom looked to be newly fitted and, in common with the rest of the hotel, was very clean. However, the water pressure was very low meaning that the shower was more of a trickle than a shower. Having said this, I have experienced the same in much more expensive hotels up and down the land. Breakfast was fine, albeit nothing special. Serving staff were very friendly if not always fully organised (being asked for my order two or three times, for example). The man who I presumed was the manager or owner seemed fairly dour and seemed to regard customers as something of an inconvenience. In summary, no major problems and I would stay here again, albeit I would look elsewhere, first, by preference. Collapse

This was such a lovely place to stay. The room was very comfortable and tastefully decorated. I was sad to only stay one night, I would have liked to have been staying longer! There was a homely, welcoming feel about the place and the staff were very friendly. The breakfast was good, with unlimited coffee and juice, and a choice between cooked or continental. Parking was very easy - and there was plenty of space. It was really well located for the centre of the city, being only a 10-15 minute walk into the centre. I would highly recommend this hotel, and would definitely stay here again myself if I was staying again in Gloucester. Collapse
