Nice enough hotel, with a central location. My room was very spacious, but the bathroom looked very dated. The lack of free WiFi in the rooms seems dated too. The breakfast buffet was excellent. Staff throughout the hotel were friendly and efficient.

A very dated hotel in need of refurbishment-the hotel bar was full of students during the day and early evening with no where to sit-wifi signal at its limit-and when I asked why do you let the students in-I was told in no uncertain terms that they spend a lot of money-well that put me off drinking in the bar immediately-the room I was in was very small and basic-not worth the price-could have done with a complete refurb-no in room fridge-doors to one of the units were screwed shut with two big screws-wouldn't stay there again Collapse

On my recommendation of this hotel, my parents on a recent trip up to see us decided to stay at the Royal County and they were not disappointed. Before they arrived I went in and spoke to Reception staff explaining that my Father is registered disabled and that I wanted to pay the parking in the secure carpark for the length of the stay. This request was no problem and dealt with very efficiently and I was able to let my parents know where they were to park. On arrival they were pleasantly surprised to see a stand reserving a disabled parking space with their name on. Reception staff were happy and 'smiling', and helped with luggage. They explained everything that my parents needed to know and even offered to arrange transport to the cathedral should they want to visit. Their room was very spacious with a sofa and chair to relax on. Bathroom had bath with overhead shower and a separate shower. Two wash hand basins and complementary toiletries. First night's meal was from the bar and although not totally happy they enjoyed what they had. Despite not being as enjoyable as my dad liked they were happy with the food and yet he received apologies and a thank you for the feedback. Breakfasts were hot with plenty of choice and again staff that were happy and helpful. My parents had an accessible room with a huge bed, soft thick carpet and plenty of space to move about. They are both in their mid 80's and like being comfortable when they are away from home. This hotel gave them that in bucketloads. They don't write reviews but after listening to what they had to say, and the fact they were talking about their next visit to the Royal County I felt a review had to be written. They stayed on my recommendation and yet the staff have set the bar for others in the chain as they are looking to stay with Marriott when they visit my sister in Lancashire. On checking out Dad was given a refund for the meals on the first night. Wow, well done Royal County. You exceeded ALL our expectations. THANK YOU! All members of staff encountered were professional, happy and interested in their guests. They listened and I have to say that in my opinion they nailed the customer service within every dept.
