Just got home after a perfect 1 night visit to Durham staying at the County, I have passed this hotel dozens of times and had a drink there but never stayed. We had asked about parking and said we would be arriving early so wanted to park up and have a walk around we arrived at 11.30am to be told our room was ready, I was very surprised but the Gentleman man on reception told they knew we were going to be early so had sorted our room out for us, everything continued in this top class manner, I brought the car into the car park and went to check in, again the same person had noted down my registration number so I had less to fill in on the form, we were offered breakfast at a discounted rate, which we accepted. The room was spacious, clean with a good bathroom and importantly quiet and peaceful for a good nights rest, the staff in reception were very friendly and helpful as were those everywhere else the bar staff served to your table and were very polite and courteous I made enquiries at the restaurant about arrangements for breakfast and was given full details of what to expect and the best time to come down to avoid it being busy, the same Gentleman was there the next morning and he and the Lady who showed us to our table were once again very friendly and courteous this is getting a bit repetitive but honestly every member of staff we met was exactly the same house maids, bar staff, kitchen all made you feel really welcome. The breakfast was buffet style with a full range of hot and cold choices with beverages served to your table, well worth the price. The County is also only a short walk from all the main attractions in the City, out the front to the right and your there, they also have leisure facilities and a StarBucks although we did not take advantage of either of these. This is not the place to go for afternoon tea. The bar staff are courteous and friendly but that's it. Our tea plates consisted of two very small scones one plain, one cheese. Six very small dried up finger sandwiches, a dried piece of fruit cake, and two sweet things which were not pleasant. Jam and butter was already on the table but we had to ask twice for cream and twice for coffee. The service was atrocious and the place wasn't busy. The kitchen must have been some distance and the bar staff seemed to do everything. I definitely do not recommend this venue, far too expensive to go home feeling hungry and unsatisfied. Collapse

Was passing and needed a quick drink. Staff were lovely. My drink was spot on but took a little time getting it. A bit on the pricey side. But all in all. . Think the sunny day helped get everyone outside.

We booked a superior room for an overnight stay as we were both very tired and liked the idea of a little more space. The room was fine but the bathroom needs attention - the taps were coming away from the unit and were on the verge of splitting. The room needed a deep clean (the carpets weren't very clean, particularly round the skirting boards) but the main thing is that the beds were unbelievably uncomfortable. Collapse
Lovely staff. Dated hotel.

Stayed here whilst my son was visiting the University. The twin room was a reasonable size and clean but, like the rest of hotel, it could do with a refurbishment. Same for the bathroom - perfectly adequate but could be so much better. Breakfast was good with cereals and a cooked assortment. The staff, however, were brilliant - helpful and cheerful. I would go back but would also love to see a bit of investment in the building. Collapse
