This is a sprawling hotel, which has been added onto on what looks like numerous occasions. Our room was in the older section, we had to go down a labyrinth of corridors and odd stairs here and there to get to our room, one of the corridors has a very lopsided floor! Our room was a good size, we had two single beds that were pretty hard. Room was clean, tea, good biscuits, water were provided, the bathroom was a bit outdated but clean and in good working order, though upon flushing the toilet the pipes would make a terrific din for a few minutes! The windows were not double glazed but there were thick curtains to stop drafts, room was very quiet. Breakfast was pretty good, and you are steps way from the town center. Staff were all friendly. There seems to be a "leisure centre" attached to the hotel. Collapse

We were in Durham for the cricket. Although our rooms were on the ground floor, they were quiet and clean. The hotel offered breakfast at a discounted rate if prepaid in advance. You can buy a voucher at reception. We arrived after transatlantic travel at about 4pm and were able to get a delicious hot meal from the bar, as he main restaurant was not yet serving dinner. There's also a Starbucks on property, and the city centre was within walking distance. The lady who checked us in was a trainee, but she was extremely helpful, and will be an asset to their team. If I ever come back to Durham, but definitely stay there, and will recommend it to friends. Collapse
No mineral water in the room, and a nasty damp smell throughout

Stayed here for a 4 day trip with my company and other colleagues. Very stuffy and a bad damp smell in room 158 and associated walkway to room. I awoke at 3 a.m and looked for some water to help overcome my thirst, none in sight and no minibar, ok so I have to drink the sink water, yuk it's not exactly clear. I drink enough to take away the feeling of dry throaty coughing caused by a combination of damp and hot room. So after a busy day in the office I figured benefit of doubt, maybe they hadn't realised my room was occupied and had neglected a complimentary bottle of water, so on arriving back in my room tonight, alas same situation no water. All of my colleagues in other rooms who paid the same amount had received water, hmm ok, maybe another mistake I thought. I'm easy going, so I thought I'd ask reception on the way out if I could have a small bottle of water for tonight, especially given the fact that there are no night shops nearby. But to my surprise, she informed me that room 158 does not qualify for the 500 ml 50 pence water and that was the end of it as far as she was concerned. So I'm in my damp smelling room with bathroom tap water for company. I will not stay here again and will discuss with my company to book me in a proper hotel next time! How pathetic is this penny pinching method of random room distribution and surely if your hotel smells bad, you would try to balance with basics essentials such as water. An awful needless experience, Marriott hotel? 3 / 4 star? +500 pounds, bad smell, loud aircon, and discoloured tap water, you can't be serious, really? Collapse

Came up on our way to the Great North Run and was lucky to get a last minute reservation, due to a cancellation. The hotel was very clean and comfortable; rooms, sheets etc impeccably clean. Booking in took less than 5 minutes and we were settled in. We were fortunate in that we had a mini suite, very comfortable. As we had lunched earlier in the day, we settled for some room service meals, pie and chips in my case and a Cobb salad for my wife. 20 minutes after ordering the two excellent meals arrived in the room and very much appreciated. Breakfast was also good and the staff happily provided us with plenty of hot milk for the very weak Lattes ( milk with a dash of coffee) that we enjoy first thing in the morning. The staff were very friendly and helpful and were working well as a team. All in all, a very enjoyable experience. Collapse
