High cost didn't match its standard

I booked DoubleTree Suites as a retreat for myself. I had a rather high expectation because: the cost is rather high compared to other 4-star or even 5-star hotels in the same area, 2. DoubleTree hotels around the world have so far given me a good impression. However, after my stay with them, the only thing I would rate 5 Stars is their location. That's it! The overall service in this hotel only deserve a 1 Star (except for my room attendant and one bellman did show that they care). The receptionists and even the phone operator were very impolite. Management, is that a New York thing or just your good hotel's service standard? Secondly, the room, closet and facilities are very dated. (this wasn't my biggest concern anyways. The service standard was!) On my last day, instead of helping me get a cab as I requested, the bellman convinced me to take the black hotel limousine to go to the JFK airport for $80 (he stressed that it's inclusive of the tips). However, after recklessly driving and speeding, the driver finally got me safely to the airport. Guess what, he started asking for additional tips and refused to let me go. I finally had to raise my voice and quickly pulled my luggage into the departure hall when the cars behind were honking him to move his car. My sincere advice to anyone who'd like to choose this hotel: check out other hotel options around this area first (eg. Renaissance, Marriott Marquis, etc). If you can find a decent hotel with lower price, do go for that option because it's really not worth it to spend this much for this kind of ignorant service. Collapse

This is the second time I have stayed at this hotel and it was just as nice as the first visit. The lobby has been remodeled since I last visited. The lobby seemed a bit smaller but adequate. There is a small cafe and the bar turns into a breakfast/coffee bar in the morning. The hotel staff is super friendly. The best part of this hotel is the location. We easily walked to The Barrymore theater and the Eugene O'Neill theater to see some Broadway shows. You can also walk to several other popular sights or catch the hop on, hop off bus right outside. This is the perfect suite when traveling with a teenager. The separate bedroom, living room and spacious bathroom is nice to have. It's very spacious compared to other NYC hotels. The decor was updated, clean and tasteful. The living room has a small refrigerator and microwave in a bar area with sink if you want to bring food back to your room. There is no food room service in the hotel. The king size bed was very comfortable. The pull out sofa bed in the living was also comfortable for my teen. We had a nice city view located on the 32 floor. Traffic noise was minimal and not too disturbing at night. The rooms seemed nicely insulated. I will definitely stay here again. Collapse

This was our first time staying in Times Square. We usually stay at a Hilton brand when we travel. The location is convenient to everything TS has to offer. The subway is literally right outside the entrance. Most of the restaurants nearby are chains. Walk a couple of blocks through the theatre district and you're in Hell's Kitchen - lots of great restaurants to choose from! The main lobby is on the 3rd floor. This is good because you don't have just anyone walking into the hotel. Guests have to show their room key cards to get through the ground floor lobby. Check in was fast and easy. As I took care of that a Hilton employee struck up a conversation with my husband. Uh oh, I thought...here we go! He asked if we had a free morning....I knew it! They wanted us to sit in on a presentation (Hilton's version of a timeshare....The Grand Vacation Club. We know...we are owners (ugh!...biggest mistake ever!). We told him nicely, no thank you....we are owners (his eyes lit up....thinking we want to upgrade....no, we want to unload the darn thing!). We also had every minute accounted for on this vacation. No time for the 60 min (in Hilton time = 3 hours) presentation (aka: hard sell sales pitch). He backed off - I was impressed! First. Time. Ever. We get hounded every time. Back to the hotel....it was clean and quiet. The decor was a little dated, but that's ok. We just needed a clean quiet place to lie our heads and shower. The housekeeping staff was very attentive and friendly. Free wifi for Honors members. Hilton just needs to chill with the Grand Vacation Club stuff...otherwise I would have given them 5 stars. Right in the heart of Time Square, you are truly in the middle of everything. Walking distance to 5th Ave shopping, Empire State Building, and Central Park. Large rooms. A lot more space then you would expect in New York. WiFi works. The staff is sooooo wonderful and helpful. Lots of families stay here. Very quiet hotel rooms. There is a secure ATM on site. We thought the price was very reasonable. There is a sink area outside the bathroom, which is nice. The only problem we had was with the concierge deck, they were not help at all. They always directed us to someone else or told us just to "do it yourselves." I guess I am just used to concierges in New York that knock themselves out to help. Collapse
