We were so looking forward to staying here as a surprise birthday visit. Start with the positives, I have to say the hotel grounds and restaurants are beautiful. The hotel is NOT in Marbella and this is a€20 taxi drive from Marbella! The hotel bedrooms were boring, nothing special in comparison to other hotels but we had a lovely sea view. Molton Brown washing kits in the room and all toilets/bathrooms within the hotel. We were given an early check in when we arrived at 11am which was great. The hotel was VERY busy with corporate events. This did impact on facilities and our enjoyment. We were unable to get into the hotel restaurant, not that this mattered as we went to Elviria restaurant across the road, great food and wine and we were able to eat al fresco as the weather was great. The upper pool is quiet and the water heated. The weather was fantastic 24-28 degrees, hot for October. When we sat by the upper pool on our second day, there was so much noise in the afternoon by staff dragging around furniture, collecting sun beds, moving equipment. We then realised that they were setting up for an outdoor corporate event. Instead of putting up a sign advising of this or apologising to guests for the noise and disruption caused, the staff actually constructed a drinks bar around us as we lay on our sunbeds! I could not believe it! We complained to reception on our way to get changed that evening but nothing was done. We ordered food from the restaurant by the upper pool. The food was not of a good standard at the upper pool restaurant and service is terrible. I had the WORST prawn pil pil I’ve ever experienced (try the nearby tapas El Barracon x100 better and great value for money!) on a separate occasion we ordered food, waited an hour, they realised they had forgotten to process the order, we just walked off! On two separate occasions at the pool restaurant we sent cold food back to the kitchen . The food at the Orange Club is no better and service equally poor. Food and drink is more expensive here (if you’re watching your euros). The pool here is freezing cold. Despite asking to speak to the hotel manager three times, this did not happen. However we did get a call from staff at reception to say we could come back and talk to the manager, however we were meeting family that day so didn’t get an opportunity to discuss matters until we checked out. We were on a couples holiday and were annoyed at having to keep complaining. Customer service is NOT a priority. This is a shame as the grounds of the hotel, the cleanliness of the rooms and the hotels facilities are very good but the poor service spoils what could be a great place. The breakfast choice is good but the scrambled eggs were always cold! Ever heard of a food thermometer chef? Go for the fruit platter or ask for your eggs freshly cooked. The latte is great but again service is VERY slow. Staff would see you sitting down and take up to 20mins before they asked if you wanted a hot drink so we went up to the coffee bar ourselves every day to order our drinks, again NOT 5 star standard and I should know as I’ve been fortunate enough to have stayed in some of the best hotels in the world, real 5 star hotels, which the Don Carlos is not. Take note, if you’re looking for a 5 star hotel in Marbella, this is not it! On check out the manager refunded just ONE meal from the poolside restaurant. What a joke! If I’d had my way I wouldn’t have signed for any of the food but my husband didn’t want to cause a scene. Good restaurants nearby are those mentioned above and The Beach House. Also try La Sala by the Sea or Mahiki Beach by La Sala. Would I go back, no I wouldn’t, there are far better hotels for equal or less money than we paid in the heart of Marbella. Collapse

The Don Carlos has been a renowned hotel in marbella for a number of years and it is a good few yeats sonce I have visited. Pleased to be able to report that it remains as good as it always has been and great to see that their maintenance team keeps the place looking fresh and wonderful. Set about 10km outside of Marbella in a very prominent position a few minutes walk from beach. It has extensive and wonderful grounds which are a delight. Many cabanas near pool and in grounds for peaceful relaxation. Health club/spa offers some great treatments that male a stay here rather special. Staff are very customer focused and make your stay here feel very Individual and special notwithstanding this is a large hotel. It is large but it has space! A lovely hotel. Collapse

Although this is a lovely hotel, it is lacking in atmosphere. Everywhere is spotless, the lobby is a very modern space but then other parts of the hotel is in need of updating especially some of the areas around the pool, particularly the toilets. We had a superior room which had some issues mainly if you are older as a lot of the guests are, you cannot have a shower without stepping into a bath. Our first morning arriving down to breakfast there was no staff member to greet you and show you to a table, we had to wander around the very large breakfast room ourselves scouting out a clean table. it was our fifth and last morning before we were greeted and shown to a table. The bar at night is dead and so lacking in atmosphere. We needed to use a computer and they had Two for clients use, neither of which worked and staff didnt offer an alternative. The pool is a lovely temperature, I really dont think we would return here Collapse
