Price is straight up the only thing this place has going for it. Four star hotel is based entirely only on the "facilities" of the hotel, if you can even call them that. Arrived at the hotel at 8pm and was greeted at reception with smiling faces. So far so good. That was until we we're informed that there is - No WIFI in the rooms, only in the public areas (e.g. reception, restaurant and pool). - No swimming in the pool without a swimmimg cap. Not even if you're not putting your head under. Even worse, you need to pay €3.50 for the swimming cap. - No food or drink to be consumed in public areas (which i understand) but they we're sure to make a point of it (of which they approached a couple sitting on the balcony enjoyimg there 250ml bottle of wine). To summarise, upon arrival at reception you're essentially informed you are not allowed to have any fun whatsoever on the premises! Onto the rooms. They are in serious need of a renovation. They havent been touched since the 70's, when this place was probably constructed. Forget any water pressure in the shower or water saving toilets with the 60 liters of water it uses to flush. The AC runs at one setting or nothing at all. I've eaten pancakes thicker than the pillows we slept on. When asking reception for additional pillows, i was told maybe one and got none, until we asked again. Sound proofing? Goodluck sleeping in. Our rooms we're under receptions foyer and next to what seemed to be an emergency exit (which was actually they main cleaners service door) which was louder than a drum solo at a metal concert. Every footstep, chair screech and pin drop could be heard from above. There was a connecting door between our room and the room next door, made of what i can only assume is butchers paper since we could here every breath our neighbours took. The "minibar" consisted of a "fridge" which barely had the ability to keep drinks cool, fitted inside a locking cupboard, of which the door didnt stay closed unless locked, with a key that acted only as a screw driver (we did get two complimentary bottles of water however). Parking will set you back €20 euro a night. If you're lucky, your car will be parked in the 6 or so spaces available. If not, it will be parked 7 minutes walk to the closest garage that you have to pick up yourself! They will valet your car when you return back to the hotel however. No way this is a Four Star hotel. Positano is an expensive area to stay, I get that, and that is why the only thing good about this hotel is the price. 1. The room is air conditioned: only fan setting that worked was low (my friends room next door was ok, when I asked them to check it they said "sorry this is the one setting that works" 2. Swimming Pool: you need to wear a swimming cap otherwise you cannot swim, Hotel Rule. And if you want a cap, u need to buy it. 3. Wifi: only in public areas, and the connectivity and speed is below useable. No WIFI in rooms. 4. Pillows: our room had 3, when asking for a fourth they said they will try. 1 day later, a pillow inside a pillow case that was twice the size of the pillow. 5. Condition of Hotel: paint peeling, stray cats, carpet is worn. My friends stayed in room 508 and the signs in the floor say 506-507 even though 508 is down that corridor. 6. Condition of Room: Antique furniture which is far from stylish. Broken power points tiny television that has no reception, the list goes on. 7. The doors: they are extremely old and when leaving the bathroom I was temporarily locked in as the handle got jammed 8. Noise: one night there was a DJ setup at the bar, he was playing music extremely loud at 11.30 at night. This is understandable if there was people enjoying themselves, but there was absolutely no one at the hotel bar, he was blaring music to an empty room. The lyrics could be heard clearly from our room. This may seem like a long list of issues all occurring across 4 days, but if you don't believe me. I urge you to see for yourself. I really doubt how this is possibly a 4 star hotel. In my opinion, Stay away.. Collapse

the location is not for everyone. It's pretty far up from the beach and the main part of town. We didn't mind because it is closer to the connector road, and we honestly liked the walk up and down each day. The pool is very nice (and rare in this area), and their deck for drinks and breakfast is beautiful. the thing for me that is inexcusable is the service. Breakfast seemed chaotic each morning -- like it was the first time they were doing it. Coffee was slow, there wasn't enough food or bowls or silverware. And not just one day, but each day. And we heard complaints from other guests. it didn't get better. Even at the end of the day, trying to enjoy a drink on the beautiful deck, the drink would take 20 min to arrive - and we were the only one there. If they could improve their breakfast and service, I could see this hotel going up at least one star in my mind. Collapse

I stayed at Hotel Royal Positano for 2 nights in June with my husband. We opted for the hotel as it was a last minute booking in a reasonable location with a pool. This hotel is like fawlty towers... the layout is so strange with random staircases leading to various floors and rooms. Once we worked that out we were met with an economy triple room that looked like it hadn't been touched since the 1970's. The room is in serious need of refurbishment - mould in the bathroom, paint peeling off the walls, no items in the minibar, no safe, no wifi in the rooms, and it smelt absolutely vile, like an horrendous air freshener. The worst thing about the whole place was the fact that you weren't allowed in the pool unless you were wearing a swimming cap, for which you had to pay 3.50 euros each for the privilege.... so even though you are spending £150 a night to stay there, you had to pay to use the pool! The pool snack bar offered very limited food which was ridiculously overpriced. One good thing was the view from our balcony overlooking Positano and that is all. Honestly, I'd recommend avoiding this hotel as far as possible. Collapse
