The views from the Hotel Royal Positano's balcony are stunning & the staff quite helpful/pleasant, but overall, the location is hardly ideal (while the local bus comes to the entrance of the hotel, there are a number of other inns much closer to the center of town. Continually waiting for the bus is a nuisance - especially given its unreliable timetable.) The pool, surrounding gardens and main restaurant are all quite pleasant, but the interior and rooms appear to have last been "decorated" (if you can call it that) in the 1970s. The elevator does not go below the 3rd floor (never mind that there are rooms on the 1st & 2nd floors), and the dingy carpet/scuffed walls on the lower levels are downright depressing. Needs a major renovation/overhaul! Collapse
Not worth the money

My wife and I decided to splurge on our hotel In Positano and boy did we pick the wrong hotel to splurge on. If we only paid $100-150 per night this place probably would have been fine. However we paid $1000 for 3 nights. The weather was also terrible the 2 full days we had in positano so that also forced us to spend more time in the hotel and notice things we may not have. The whole vibe of the hotel is very snobby, no wifi in rooms, pool was green and you had to BUY a swim cap to wear while in it, carpet in hallways is dirty and definitely not up to 4 star standard. This might be an Italian thing, but in the restaurant they charged 6 euro per person for SERVICES AND PLACE SETTING! We went out to eat at a 5 star hotel and restaurant and they did not even charge that. We really wish we would have done more research or just rented a flat. Not sure how we missed all the bad reviews on trip advisor but overall I would never stay here again or tell anyone to stay here. Collapse

This is definitely not a 4 Star hotel.. I recommend looking for a better place to stay in Positano. Firstly when we got there we had a run down of all their rules that must be followed. No wifi, only in reception that kept cutting in and out. Their pool was greener than the scenery of Positano and dont think of swimming without a swimming cap that you need to purchase also. To get to the room i need to travel in two elevators, 1 flight of stairs and 100 mtr corridor to get to an old out of date room. I then went to the hotel restuarant for dinner and they sent me away due to wearing smart casual shorts that arent allowed for some reason. I felt like i was at a school camps with too many rules. Im an adult on a honeymoon and not a child. Collapse

Royal Hotel Positano is anything but royal. I don't know how they give stars out in Italy but if this was in Australia this hotel would be -5 stars! We were meant to stay a total of 3 nights however we left after two and went back to Rome! Let's start with the only pros - -the staff are friendly they're only doing their job -The breakfast was OKAY - more often then none they didn't have enough plates of cups ready and you had to wait. -the view from the hotel is lovely Now onto the cons - -Wifi only available in public areas & not in your rooms. I mean what the actual ....? More often then none the reception area would be full of people trying to use the wifi which I might add is so terrible you may as well not even bother. - the hotel is a maze. If you enjoy getting lost and using lifts that rattle and sound like they're going to stop at any minute you'll love it here -the restaurant tries to be a "fine dining" experience with the menu changing daily however McDonald's has better food then what they offer -if you wish to swim in a pool that never gets cleaned and closes at 6pm you will need to wear a swimming hat which you need to buy for extra cost. I mean hair in the pool is so unhygienic but not cleaning it is fine right? -should you need anything at all they say to ask and they will send room service however prepare to pay 5 euro each time -the room decor is so outdated, my grandmas house is more stylish then this place. Our room had a broken/cracked toilet seat but that's totally fine -the pillows are so paper thin you may aswell not even use one - at dinner time if you are a male you can't wear shorts because it's "fine dining" and the waiters make you go and change -the restaurant closes until lunch time and reopens back up at 7:30 for dinner. So if you want a snack please make sure you use the 400+ steps to make it down to town. Over all just don't do it. It is utterly the most horrific place I have ever stayed. It's a waste of money and they try to be posh and set someone sort of rules but overall it is just an epic fail. Collapse

Pros Marco, Alexander and Yari, excellent customer service. View spectacular but pretty much every hotel has a spectacular view in Positano Breakfast decent Cons Don't ask them to make you a sandwich it is processed cheese and ham. It is literally thrown together something, I know I can make myself 10 times better. 1/2 a mile to walk to your room You have to wear shower cap in the pool plastic cups, plates etc. at the pool Takes a good minute to be able to open the room door This was the most expensive hotel we paid for while on vacation in Italy. Not worth the money we spent. When we were checking out there was a guest who refused to pay for the dinner they had there for they claimed it was disgusting and the hotel should be a shame for serving such food. They also let the Manager know they were going to put this on Trip Advisor and the Manager said I don't care. This was a shock to me and so unprofessional. In Positano they charge you for everything to sit, restroom etc. be ready to pay. We took a boat ride to Positnao OMG they pack you on the boad like sardines made me wonder if something was to happen would there be enogh life vests? No idea. We took a taxi bacl to Salerno to catch our train was too tramatizing to take the boat back. Collapse
