We have never been to Crete before, so did not really know what to expect. The resort looked and sounded lovely on the website, and that did not disappoint. Arriving in Crete is a bit of a shock, as it looks so barren as you drive away from the airport. However, after a short time, this rather barren, but very mountainous island really grows on you, and the sea views are lovely. Having gone in October, the weather was changeable. Most days were warm and sunny and suitable for sunbathing and going out on the sea. However, the temperature dropped at night, which made dining in some of the restaurants rather challenging. Dining is one of my greatest pleasures, on holiday, but I do enjoy my food hot. I cannot complain about the cooking, as everything that I ate in the hotel was good....but spoiled by not being hot enough. Sometimes this was due to the restaurant being outside, although under cover, but in the buffet, it was due to the food not being kept at the correct temperature. One of the highlights of this Hotel was the Beach BBQ, which we decided to attend on our last night there. This was expensive at £50 a head, with no wine included, but we were really looking forward to some lovely, freshly roasted meat, straight off the coals. Not so. The meat was all cooked in advance, and then put into chafing dishes for serving purposes. It was very dark and the serving area was very small so, people had to queue to get their meat, and the result was less than good. The meat was cold, over cooked and such a disappointment. A huge amount of effort had been put out to provide a large choice of meats and seafood, and there were lots of salads which were good, but, I did not want to go back for second helpings. I am sure that, on a warmer evening, the location of this BBQ is lovely, but, it was freezing down there. So, if you go on a chilly evening, make sure you wrap up warmly, and that your children are adequately dressed also. The entertainment for the evening was a local Greek dance group, who involved the diners in their dance routines. This was much enjoyed by all. The location of this Hotel is lovely, and sea view rooms are well worth it with an ever changing range of colours throughout the day. The trip to Spinalonga can be reached by boat from Plaka...a lovely little village with lots of good restaurants, shops and bars. This is within walking distance. Be careful though, when walking, as there are few pavements. There are a couple of small supermarkets in Plaka for your requirements. Spinalonga is very interesting to wander around, and there is a cafe back at the docking area which is very welcome, when waiting for your return boat. The Hotel Beach area is very pleasant...not large, but reasonably sheltered and has a bar and a restaurant. We also enjoyed hiring a motorised boat for an hour and sailing around the Bay. Perfectly safe, unless the sea is particularly rough. Back at the Hotel, there is an adult only pool for those who do not have children, and wish some quiet time. This is a Hotel which is very popular with families, so, beware the Buffet restaurant at night time, as it is very noisy. Perhaps it might be a good idea for families to take their children to a special sitting..say 6-7.30, and then have an adults only sitting after that for those who like to have a more relaxed dinnertime. The staff in the Hotel could not have been more friendly and were always very pleased to go the extra mile to help. If we had any problems in the villa, it was always addressed very quickly. Buggies usually came pretty quickly, if required and booking for taxis etc were always promptly attended to. We used taxis to go to Elounda on a few occasions. There are loads of restaurants there, and, again, we found the Cretan people very friendly and always giving us extra food and drink that we had not ordered and not charging us extra for it either. The food was always hot, excellent, and very reasonably priced. There are lots of shops in Elounda, and a couple of supermarkets. Boat trips can also be taken from here.Taxis are easy to get, for returning to the Hotel, and costs about 8 Euros. In Elounda, there is a pleasant walk along the seafront to a little restaurant at the end of the Bay, which serves good food, and there is a historical church which can be explored here. Views up the Bay make good holiday photos. Evening entertainment in the Hotel is lacking. There is music in the main bar, which is a very lovely place to sit. We found the music a bit dreary...and I think more people would use the bars if the music was a little livelier. The drinks are very expensive, and, again, I think more people would use these bars if the drinks were more reasonably priced. They would also drink more, so, the Hotel would not lose money by dropping the prices a bit. We used the special lounge a few times, for snacks and drinks. This was enjoyable...sometimes there was not much on offer though, so, choose your times. Spirits are only on offer between 8 and 10, which is usually when we are at dinner. So, to sum up, a well run hotel, where the management really care about what you think, and go out of their way to get to know you. My only criticism is regarding food temperature in the buffet, and I complain about this with most of the hotels I have visited. The only hotel where the buffet food was excellent, that I have visited recently, was the Oriental Mandarin in Singapore. They seem to be able to serve and keep food hot on an immense scale...so, if they can do it, why can't these other 5 star hotels. So, 5 stars for the Staff, 5 stars for location,5 stars for the Cretan people, 5 stars for Accommodation. Collapse

We had never been to Greece before we stayed in this hotel. Being in the Marriott Family, it attracted us, the web site makes it look a special place, and it is. The hotel is a couple of miles outside Elounda, which is a little coastal town right at the eastern end of the island of Crete. The hotel is on the coast, although the main (not terribly main!) road runs across the front part of the campus, but there is a pedestrian underpass to the beach where there is the usual beach café, a little beach shop, and a Greek style restaurant. (there's a small pier into the sea by this restaurant, try and get a table on the pier, it's magical!). But most of the hotel is on the landward side of the road, not that it (the road) intrudes at all on your stay. The main complex has the main restaurant, a bar with plenty of outside seating, another restaurant which doubles as a café for the large adults only pool and , in the evening, another restaurant. Then there are the bedrooms. These are in very small blocks, one up one down or two of those connected - that's as dense as you will get - and the "villa" we had boasted a very large lounge, then another lounge extension as a balcony, with a hot tub at the side, then a large well equipped bedroom with an equally large bathroom. In short, it's all very luxurious. This type of bedroom is to be found on the rising slope above the main complex; access is by a pathway which twists and turns up the hillside like an alpine pass, it's just big enough for two buggies to pass. At the top of the hill there is a helicopter pad, then there is a sort of plateau and there you will find what really amounts to a little village of separate villas, each of them with private gardens and so on. Also, there is the main swimming pool, with a rather good Italian restaurant on one side and the swimming pool café on the other side. So unless you are super fit or trying to get that way, you might well feel inclined to use the buggies for transport around the place. We are both in our seventies, we usually strolled down the hill for breakfast but all other times used the buggy system, which is operated by a brigade of good looking and polite young men!!! One of the attractions about this hotel is that if you have chosen one of the villas on the forward sloping area, you have the most magnificent view of the island of Spinalonga, until the Fifties a leper colony (read Victoria Hislop's "The Island"). You can easily get there, even from the hotel beach in one of the water skiing tow boats as we did, although it was a bit hairy and is another story! We went to this hotel for a week's chilling out, we only left it the once to go across to Spinalonga, we would go back happily, the service is very good indeed and the food is good as well. Collapse

I stayed there almost one year ago and absolutely loved it. Everything was perfection: food, the view, the service. The concierge was extremely helpful in arranging some local tours and I appreciate that very much. My husband especially liked the grounds- it was kept like a small Greek fishing village with winding, cobblestone roads leading you to the rooms. I keep thinking about what a wonderful time I had here and I want to come back! Collapse
