My wife and I stayed at the Domes of Elounda for 3 days as part of our Honeymoon in the Greek Islands. This resort was wonderful from the moment we arrived up until we unfortunately had to leave. On arrival the valet took our car and we were escorted to the bar for welcome drinks. The staff were fantastic explaining the resort before escorting us to our wonderful room which they had upgraded for us. We had a private pool, private jacuzzi and a wonderful view of the island of Spinalonga. They also left wine and food gifts for us during our stay and made us feel incredibly special. All staff were wonderful, but special mention to Thomas who was a perfect host and really made sure we were well looked after. The food at the resort was top quality and beautifully presented. The spa services were also excellent, though a little expensive. We hope to return to the Domes of Elounda as it was a very special experience. Highly recommended. Collapse

I don't give out a lot of 5 star reviews but this property certainly deserves one. The ambience is incredible. The service attitude is exceptional. The food is mostly excellent (don't miss out on a fish lunch at the Greek restaurant on the beach). Despite being an older property, the maintenance is fantastic. We stayed at a two bedroom suite with a pool and the layout is just fantastic. Hard to find such an amazing mix of elegance, fun and great service that pleases both parents and children for an unforgettable family holiday of relaxation. Another plus in this day and age is that the free wifi works very well all over the property (including most parts of the beach). We could hardly find anything to complain about except a few things here and there that need refurbishment (the hotel is a few years old) such as a shower drain. We barely left the hotel! Collapse

My husband and I stayed at the Domes for 5 nights the last week in September. We booked the trip using my husband's Marriott points. I didn't know if we would receive an upgrade or not since we booked it with points, but fortunately we did. We booked a standard sea view room with whirlpool on the balcony, but were updated to a villa with a private pool. We arrived very late after a long day of travel and were pleasantly greeted with a fast check in. The hotel seems to be arranged with an "older" section where the main reception is and a "newer" section where the villas are. To travel between, you have to ride on club cars. You technically could walk, but there are some very steep hills to climb. To get a pickup from the room, I was able to call the front desk and have someone arrive at our villa door within 5 minutes to pick us up. When at the main reception area, where you can go to some of the restaurants, a bar and the beach, the club cars pick up fairly regularly. We had to wait the most maybe 7 minutes or so to have a car arrive over there to pick us up. All in all I didn't find that having to use the club cars was a problem. The villa itself was beautiful with the private pool and the master bedroom having a sliding door and view of the pool. My biggest complaint about the hotel is regarding the temperature of the pool water with the private pool, as well as the main pools. The pools were so beautiful, but I saw few people in them because the water was so cold. I did get in our private pool a few times (on the hottest days) because I was determined to use it. Even though the overall temperature outside was in the mid 70s, I don't understand why the water was so cold. I had read several reviews about the temperature of the water before we went, so I don't know that it was necessarily due to when we went, but I suspect it's always like this. It's such a shame to have that nice luxury but not be able to use it. We had the choice to have complimentary breakfast because of my husband's platinum status with Marriott and that was a very nice benefit. The breakfast area for the side with the villas was in the restaurant that overlooked the pool. Very nice view. We had options for breads, yogurt, all kinds of juices, cereal, hot eggs, potatoes, bacon, and omelettes to order. It would have been nice to have seen a little more variety offered each day though. The overall ambience of the hotel was wonderful and relaxing. As I said, we were there for 5 nights, so we had the opportunity to relax as well as visit the area. The service was excellent. I called the reception area so many times that my husband jokingly said he thought they'd be excited when we left, but seriously, they were always attentive. We were unsure of how to use the Nescafe coffee maker, so that was the reason for one of my calls. To get taxis to take us in to Elounda or to Plaka, we could call the front desk and get one quickly. Our only other issue, besides the pool temperature, was that the "back" area where the taxi was called to pick us up, had a gated entrance and a few times the door wouldn't work for the taxis to be able to get in. One time they had to send a maintenance worker to come open the gate. Another time we were in a taxi and the driver asked us to walk outside of the gate because he had gotten "stuck" before and couldn't get out. Lighting in the villa bathrooms is not bright enough. I would highly recommend the Domes o Elounda hotel and we would return. I think I would go a little early in September when it would possibly be a little warmer though. It was a great vacation! When I found this property, one of the things that struck me was that this was considered a "category 9" hotel in Marriott's rating system. I never knew that rating existed, and so I was expecting an experience like none I had ever had before at a Marriott, and I have stayed at probably at least 100 Marriott properties in my life. While in many ways this is a great hotel, there are a number of rough edges which made it not the unbelievable experience I expected. I will get to those, but first in fairness I will cover the good aspects. We had a large suite which was beautifully decorated and had a fantastic view of the water. Our rate included breakfast, and besides the buffet having more selection than any normal person could eat, everything there tasted fantastic. They even had a champagne bar for mimosas. Our main objective for this side trip from Santorini was relaxation, and we were definitely able to achieve that goal. For two days we scored one of the beach beds and it was great just laying by the water and reading books, with an occasional dip in the water. The bar was steps away and waiter service made it possible to get drinks without having to move. Plaka and Elounda were short drives away and I highly recommend going to both for dinner. Now for the rough edges. The service was good, but not the Pinnacle that I thought would come with a "category 9". For example, at both times we ate breakfast, we had to go and ask the waiter to bring coffee. This was after waiting for 10 minutes. This should be a pretty obvious thing. In addition, the service down by the beach was inconsistent. Sometimes the servers were right there, sometimes you didn't see them for an hour. I think part of the reason is that there seemed to be a number of new trainees here. The restaurant advertises that breakfast begins at 7, although only with cold food and then the hot food comes out at 8. This is understandable. We had to leave early to get to the ferry, and hoped to grab a quick bite before we left. At 7:05 we were knocking on the door to get in, and some of the staff was just showing up for work. Nothing was yet ready, but to their credit they hustled to try to get us some muffins and make coffee. I suppose most people are not up that early and for the most part there is no need to be ready at 7 sharp, but again I am rating based on a very high bar for service. The hot tub on the balcony was also a bit of a let down. We had just come from Santorini where we had a Jacuzzi tub overlooking the caldera and so we already had some expectations. The hot tub on this balcony was very small, but more importantly we could never really get it to a temperature that made it usable. For example, in the morning the water was cold, and the heater did not heat very quickly. We didn't want to wait around in the room for it to get warm, so the net is that we did not use it in the morning. It was pretty much the same thing at the end of the day, and they turn off power to the tubs at 10pm, so no chance of a late evening soak. There was really no way me and my wife would fit into this small tub anyway. The bathroom in the suite was a case of form over function. It was very nice to look at, and I enjoyed the rainshower head. But the room is dark and lacking in lights. The tub also has a high threshold, which I would imagine would make it difficult to get into for older folks, and getting out of the tub can be a bit of a risky endeavor if you don't have a towel on the floor. I very much liked the products they supplied however. This might seem like a harsh or nitpicky review, but again the hotel claims to set an extremely high bar but doesn't necessarily meet that bar. It is still better than most hotels and a worthwhile place to stay. Collapse
