I recently stayed for 8 nights here and highly recommend this resort. We had a private pool and the room was spacious. The whole resort is beautiful, private and very clean. The breakfasts are varied with much to offer. The beach is stunning and sunbeds, umbrellas, and beach towels are included. You need a car to stay here so that other towns can be visited. Collapse

This resort, and it's staff are absolutely exceptional. The villa we had was spectacular, as was the enormous options at breakfast. Let me give you an example of the service: Sophia in the executive lounge spent two days and multiple phone calls to find an iPad I had left behind on the plane on my flight over. She finally found it and had it set aside for me to pick up. That is service above and beyond. From the guys driving to carts to the front desk at check-in, everyone's attitude was humbling! We would stay here again in a heartbeat and I would say, that out of the hundreds of properties I've stayed in, this one ranks as the absolute best. Collapse
Stunning location, well appointed, but a little soulless

Set on a hillside in Eastern Crete (Heraklion airport 90 minutes by car), the Domes is a collection of domed apartments and villas with marvellous sea views of the seaside town / port of Elounda to the west and the former leper island of Spinalonga to the east (pace the bestselling book The Island by Victoria Hislop). Part of the Autograph Hotel group the Domes is a five star resort with a spa, four restaurants, private beach, pools, water sports etc and has the feel of a smaller, more compact and polished version of the popular Forte Village in Sardinia. Like Forte Village the Domes caters for the international professional classes, many with children under 10 (our teenagers were in a minority amongst the kids and there is nothing for them compared to the organised teen clubs of say, Mark Warner). Brits probably comprise 40% of the guests followed by Germans, Americans, French and Dutch, and a liberal sprinkling of comedy Russians - all shaven heads, speedos and Barbie partners who can be found most lunchtimes in the nearby fishing village of Plaka (10 minute walk from the Domes) where mute companionship is assuaged by copious amounts of Laurent Perrier rose and lobster. So what's good? The beach is pretty and well staffed with a decent beach bar, ok restaurant - Topos - and a friendly water sports unit. I would recommend hiring a self-drive motorboat for an hour (only €50) which is enough time to cruise around Spinalonga and weigh anchor for a swim in one of the bays on the deserted archipelago across the straight from the Domes. Generally the staff at the resort are excellent. Less good value are the inflatable sofa / tube rides at €25 per person for a 15 minute tow. With two teenage boys we managed to rack up €500 worth of rides in six days. Plaka (10 minutes walk from the resort) is great for lunch with a selection of pretty seaside tavernas all offering fresh fish, owner hospitality and the ubiquitous free Raki and watermelon after lunch or dinner. Check out Giorgio's or Ostria for the best food and service. The fresh fish is delicious - try the sea bass, grouper, red mullet and lobster. Elounda is prettier in the evening (5 minutes car / cab driver from the Domes) and amongst the tavernas there are a few proper restaurants - try The Ferryman (our best food and wine of the holiday). The apartments are perfunctory (4 star rather than five) but make sure, if you can, to get an apartment facing Spinalonga and close to the main reception. There are a number of apartments on the other side of the hill, effectively making up a second resort which is a distance away from the beach / reception, although there is a free buggy service that ferries guests around the resort. It looks and feels like a different resort on the other side of the hill. Not so good? The main bar at the Domes is a lifeless place, usually empty, with the 70s retro decor from a Roger Moore James Bond movie. There is a communal buffet breakfast in the main restaurant which is pretty standard but the restaurant was stiflingly hot and the small outside terrace was also sweltering. Generally the resort restaurants were lacking atmosphere and we ate out every lunchtime and evening in Plaka, Elounda or (once) in Agios Nikolas - eastern Crete's version of Marbella. Overall a relaxing family resort, ideal for young families whose harassed parents want somewhere they can camp for a few well earned weeks of rest and recuperation in a safe, well appointed, self-contained, if somewhat soulless resort. For our teenagers it was all a bit tame and whilst the Domes has a magical setting we found it a little anodyne gaining most pleasure from our daily trips off campus to Plaka, to lunch at friendly Greek tavernas and watch surly Russians burning through €200 bottles of rose as everyone else enjoyed the local wine by the 1 litre carafe for €10. Yamas! .. Collapse

We chose this resort as self-contained and convenient as we have a four year old toddler and granny. The services were excellent with very friendly staff. The buggy service is great and also available within ten minutes. The beach is small but pretty and child friendly. More activities for toddlers would be better say soft play area. Our package included meals and so we tried all the restaurants. The food was good quality and fresh. We wished all the restaurants opened at 6pm, not just the buffet one, which meant our child going to bed late and less adult only social time in the evening. It would have been helpful to have a bus shuttle service as using taxis were expensive. Overall we were very happy with our holiday at Domes. Collapse

Our villa with it's own private pool was excellent. The location of the property and it's own beach was great for our entire family. We traveled as five adults and enjoyed the comfort of the villa. So the property itself was great. The service and staff need a little more training. Some of our biggest complaints were about the service. We had the concierge in the villa's make our dinner reservations which turned out to be not so great. One night the restaurant was not even expecting us because the hotel forgot to confirm the reservation. On another night we pre ordered the fresh lamb that Lotus Eaters was known for and that was ordered through us at the same concierge for 3 people. Instead the concierge at the hotel ordered the lamb for the 5 of us. Two of our family members are vegetarians so we would never order enough lamb for all 5. But the concierge even after being told only 3 of us wanted the lamb went ahead and ordered for 5. How embarrassing it was for us when the owner brought over the lamb especially prepared for 5 of us. We explained what happened and he wasn't surprised by the lack of professionalism by the concierge. The most upsetting experience was the night before we were to check out the property asked us via a letter to pre order breakfast meals to go. I also called for a wake up call because we were checking out very early, Not only didn't we get our wake up call, but there was no breakfast delivered and that had no clue that we pre ordered the breakfast. It was the property who initiated the breakfast to go but yet they had no record of it. We then were forced to rush and check out because our driver had us on a schedule. The buggy that takes you to your check out point was late getting us and they left our luggage at one location and us at another. It was a very nerve wracking morning trying to head out. The staff really needs to get their act together and be held responsible for their lack of service and professionalism. The breakfast area was very warm all 4 days we were there. No excuses were offered about that problem as well. The property as stated earlier was beautiful but management need to clean their act up. Collapse
