I stayed 4 nights at this hotel by myself and was sceptical given the reviews... The concierge was pleasant at check in, given it was 1am in the morning and I was given a room on the 6th floor and handed a piece of paper with details of the wifi codes. I took the elevator to the floor and it was a challenge to find my room, the hallway was dimly lit and the numbering was all over but eventually I found it. Upon entering my room the air conditioning was on full blast so it was freezing and the radio had been left on, there were 2 double beds and other furniture, a closet and the bathroom was tiny, you tripped over the toilet to get to the bath. I noticed the window blinds were broken and the curtains did not draw and were just for show, I immediately called reception and asked to me moved, the concierge apologised and sent a member of staff to my room with a new key for the 11th floor. Upon entering my new room it was clear it was newer but still in need of renovation, again the air conditioning was on as I entered. The room had 1 super king bed, proper blinds that closed and on the desk was a folder with hotel details etc, the bathroom was slightly bigger and I felt much more comfortable. There were tea/coffee making facilities, a tv with decent channels, a safe and I never once had trouble with the wifi. The only negative was the room was hot ALL the time, even when I didn't have the heating on. The hotel was in a great location, upper west side, nearest subway station was 96th street which was 2 blocks away but there was an entrance to it at the end of the street and it was the 1,2,3 train that takes you straight into Times Square. There was a Duane Reade pharmacy at the end of the street and a Mcdonalds and Starbucks opposite. The area was perfectly safe and I never had any noise disturbance. All in all I feel it was a bit pricey for what it is and it is definitely in need of some refurbishment and decoration but I would happily stay there again. Collapse

We stayed at this hotel while visiting NYC in Nov. 2017. We had stayed there in the past but were quite disappointed at how run down it has become and will not be returning. To balance this review, first the positives: Great location, close to subway, restaurants, Central Park. Safe. Nice reception area and staff were ok. The negatives: THE ROOMS WERE A DISASTER. We actually requested a room change and the 2nd room was worse than the first. Mould on the walls/ceiling, wallpaper ripped, carpet was filthy and threadbare. No bedding other than 1 blanket and sheet. No hot water, the towel rack fell apart in our hands, as did the clothes chest in the first room. The second room didn't even have one. Rust on the vents/pipes. Stains everywhere. Rooms and hallways in dire need of a major overhaul. Collapse

First, it's shabby, dirty, run down and my first room stank of mildew. Second, I wouldn't agree that the front desk people are extremely helpful--not rude, but didn't really go out of her way to help me. Third, the TV and the phone in the room didn't work. (I tried to use the room phone to call about the TV, but ended up using my cell phone). When I first spoke to the lobby about the TV, she said that my room TV directory was "out of date" and I'd need to come to the lobby and get an updated channel list. So, I waited on the very slow elevator to take me down to the lobby and got the updated channel list. On the updated channel list, fully half of the channels didn't work. Called lobby again, and she said "well, I could put you in a different room, but I can't guarantee that the TV will work, and I don't want to be moving you all over the hotel for nothing." She suggested engineering could come up. Well, he came, couldn't understand the problem, and finally blamed it on Time Warner and said none of the rooms in the hotel had fully functional TV! Unbelievable! So, I called back down to the lobby, and she said that she hadn't heard that there were other rooms with TV problems and asked what she could to do fix the problem--ummm--give me a room with a TV that works? Sooo, back down to the lobby where she gave me keys to two rooms, both of which had functioning TVs and didn't stink so badly. Oh, and the TVs? Old tube TVs. Not flat screen. It reminds me of an old Times Square hotel I stayed in back in the 1980s on a school trip. Could certainly see some gross stuff happening in here. The floor actually gave way in spots when you step on it. Noisy, no extra blankets. Totally disgusting. I have no idea where they got the photos of the rooms. I saw three different rooms on two floors and none of them looked like the photos the hotel put up to advertise their property. I would not give them any money until I saw the actual room. In addition, the rooms were so noisy that when my neighbors were going into their room, I literally thought that they were trying to open my door. Actually jumped up and checked to see if someone was trying to get in. Collapse

We arrived early and had no problem checking our bags while we toured the city. Rooms were clean and quiet. Location of hotel was ideal for using the subway to get to any part of New York city.

Old fashioned building. Checked in early. Room small, not updated recently, but clean. Comfortable bed. Staff gave me choice to wait and get a larger room, but i took first option. Window air conditioner worked well and not noisy. Staff very friendly and helpful. No restaurant in hotel, but one just half a block away gives discount for breakfast. I stay here because a friend lives close by, making the location excellent for me. Very close to local and express subway making it easy to get around town. Less than 15 minutes travel to 42nd St. Collapse
