I spent 3 days at the Daddy O Hotel in mid April and had a decidedly mixed experience. PROS: 1. Location Good location in quiet palm tree filled upscale area where you can easily walk to nice restaurants, bars, and the beach. Gray views of the ocean. There's even mall a block away that is dedicated to high end retailers. 2. Staff Friendly and helpful staff (front desk as well as housekeeping) CONS: 1. Room Size and condition Based on its upscale location and 4-star rating, I assumed the hotel facilities and rooms would be in pristine and updated condition. Sadly, I found that the the hotel is in need of updating and maintenance. The room was a bit small and poorly furnished. The decor was dated. The carpets (at least in my room) were badly stained. Also, everything seemed to be in need of deep cleaning as there was a stale musty odor that permeated the room. I was forced to go to CVS a few blocks away to get Lysol air neutralizer spray. What was odd, was that the bathroom was updated and very nice. Another small annoyance was that the air conditioning seemed antiquated. It constantly emitted a disconcerting grinding sound and only managed to feebly blow lukewarm air. Any attempt to lower the cooling temperature was thwarted because the presets made it impossible to lower the temperature. As a result, the room was humid and uncomfortable causing restless nights. 2. Lack of on-site restaurant The property description also boasted a restaurant and bar. This isn't entirely accurate. There's no restaurant on the property itself per se. Next door there is an upscale (expensive) Zagat rated restaurant (The Palm Miami). Personally, this wasn't a deal breaker as there were a nice selection of restaurants within walking distance. Some travelers might find it inconvenient, if they desire room service or expect a moderately priced dining option on the property. The hotel has copies of the Palm menus and I was told they would deliver meals to my room. I didn't avail myself of this option, so don't know how it would work. 3. Undisclosed/ hidden fees and taxes Upon checkout, my bill was close to 50.00 US$ over the price that I anticipated when I booked on Expedia. Upon closer inspection, they include a 15.00 US$ PER DAY "urban fee" and associated "urban fee taxes". So I was charged the "Urban fee" and urban fee taxes for each of the 3 days. Of my stay. This Urban fee is in reality just an outrageously dishonest hidden cost that wasn't disclosed when I booked on Expedia. I assumed the rate on EXPEDIA was indeed the TOTAL COST of my stay. Expedia and other sites need to have stricter policies in place so hotels can't claim a bargain/discounted rates while adding $15 extra per day in hidden fees and taxes. So instead of getting a room for $165.00 (room+ taxes) per night as advertised on Expedia, the true cost was $181.00 (room+ taxes) per night. Had I known about the hidden fees and taxes, I probably would have booked another hotel. If you do book this room online, add $15 to the daily rates to reflect the Urban fee and associated taxes. BOTTOM LINE I can not recommend Daddy O Hotel. Let me be clear: I didn't have an unpleasant experience. I was provided with adequate accommodation in a casual and unpretentious atmosphere. The staff were pleasant and accommodating. However, I expected much more from a hotel that described itself as a quality 4-star property. Broken windows and soiled carpets aren't characteristic of a true 4-star property. This lack of attention (or indifference) to detail relegates this hotel to a 2.5 to 3-star property. Added to this was the shock of receiving my bill and realizing that I had been deceived by the inclusion of a $15 per day "Urban Fee and associated taxes". Next time I vacation on The Bay Harbor Island's, I will probably stay at the Baltic Hotel. Collapse
