Rock and a hard place
Stay Date: August 2017 , Jason B
We've stayed here before, maybe six years ago, & were blown away at the standard. This time the initial impression was thay this hadn't had much of a refurbishment … Read More in the 6 years since. We booked this to take in the Funtasia deal, so paid for inter connected rooms, two adults & two kids. We done Funtasia on Friday & didn'tcheck in fully, after Funtasia we went to a skate park & unfortunately my son fell & broke his arm so my wife & I spent the rest of the night in A&E where my son wasadmitted for the night. He underwent minor surgery to align his broken arm the next day. That meant myself & my sons buddy arrived at the hotel at 0000hrs (I didcheck in earlier) so we just had a sleep & breakfast the next morning. My wife called the hotel on Saturday to ask if they could accommodate us for Saturday night asmy son was disappointed at missing out on a sleep over with his buddy - the hotel kindly obliged & put us up gratuit. A wonderful gesture! On Saturday morning whengetting breakfast the lady checking the room numbers enquired as to my sons well fare which was so kind. Finally after all the drama we had a few hours inBettystown after leaving the hospital & we returned to the hotel for dinner- here's where my hard place kicks in; Firstly in defence of the staff I had booked a table for2 adults & 2 kids via reception but it wasn't noted on the check sheet, this call was placed on the room phone which I had to connect as it was disconnected & inthe other room the phone handset was broken. We were shown a table - only two places set & throughout the meal it wasn't changed so we borrowed from the other tablesaround us. Service was all over the shop- no drinks offered or asked, we got water, but they lost out on revenue as they never asked if we wanted drinks- pizzaorder for the kids was wrong, but we just kept quiet as it was eaten. It took 45 mins for our mussels to arrive & when we asked our server we were informed that chef wasa "little grumpy tonight & they were so busy"! I was a bit uncomfortable when our server stood over me while I was waiting to finish my mussels - my wife promptedthe server to leave while I finished my starter. Main course was slow & the calzone left a lot to be desired, more dough than content. Desert was average, off theshelf from Pallas foods I'd imagine. All in all, it was just over two hours from sitting down to leaving the table with service having bucket loads of enthusiasmbut very disjointed in its approach to us the customer. My observation was that it wasn't short staffed but that the processes could be better aligned & theenthusiasm & honesty could be replaced with a bit more structure. Breakfast no fault good selection for all. While again I can't overly criticise the staff & howfriendly they are & acknowledge the obviously generous goodwill of accommodating us on the Saturday night for free - I have to be brutally honest & say it needs an upgradeof interiors & it's restaurant before we will revisit again.
