Check in was nice and quick. The shuttle took a few minutes to arrive, but was nice to have the option. The lobby is nice, but that's it. The hallway smelled so bad I dreaded leaving the room to have to walk back down it. Paint, carpet, and flooring is all stained and old. Room had weird neon light that turned itself on in the middle of the night. Had to plug in the lamp and the TV to get them to work and TV remote barely functioned. Collapse

This hotel is in need of an update, but it is very clean and charming in its own mid-century modern/LA sort of way. The location near the airport and LMU is very good and the staff is mostly very friendly and helpful. The food at the restaurant above the pool and the breakfast in the lobby are both very good and worth the money. You can also walk to Ralph's grocery story, a Coffee Bean coffee shop and several other restaurants. If you have a car, there is an intentional neighborhood about a mile away called Playa Vista that has a Whole Foods Market and a bunch of upscale bars and eateries. The hotel also has a van that leaves regularly to/from the airport. All in all, it's a good value and a pleasant place to stay. Collapse

The location of the hotel was excellent as we having family living in the apartment complex across the road. The room was large but very dated, I believe it is an old renovated hotel. It had it's own charm. The room was very clean and the provided toiletries in the bathroom were of excellent quality. The staff was pleasant and attentive. We had an air conditioning problem upon arrival and a maintenance came quickly and took care of the problem. The housekeeper was very pleasant and kept the room clean. The TV had numerous channels. The room was well soundproofed and quiet. The bed is very low to the ground and not very comfortable. This was my main drawback. There is a Ralph's grocery store a couple hundred feet from the hotel which is a nice perk. There are several restaurants within walking distance. We took advantage of the free airport shuttle and it worked out very well for us. Made it very easy to catch our flight Monday morning. The free wifi worked well with the code given at check in. I've stayed at this hotel several times, in 2008, 2011 and now 2017 so unfortunately, I've seen it get a little worse every time in terms of little things like the smelly carpet on the walls of the elevator for example. Many rooms could use a refresh (blinds rail coming out of the ceiling a little, crappy paint jobs, dirty windows). BUT: else than that, it's a great hotel, great value and a little stylish. It's located right above a supermarket, so you don't need to buy an expensive breakfast. The pool is quite good and also stylish. They have an airport shuttle even though they're not right by the airport. But the advantage is that you're a little closer to Venice and Santa Monica for a night out and won't have to deal with airport traffic. Wifi is very fast and you only have to log in once a day. TIP: park in Loyola Blvd. They only have valet parking and an outrageous rate and most hotels around LAX will try to rip you off with parking so just park in the street, I always found parking there. One thing is that I'm not sure they even have rooms with two beds. I booked via Expedia and indicated that we were two adults and one child and the room and one queen bed. But they brought an extra bed when I called, which was nice. The room was big enough for that 2nd bed. Collapse
Probably better for business travellers as opposed to families

My husband stays at the Custom when he is in L.A for work as it is a convenient distance from the airport and his meeting points. He also likes the sushi restaurant Kanpai which is just across the road (I do agree it is very good, not much to look at from the outside but a wonderful offering). The rooms generous but I found it rather oppressive and dark. We had our 3 year old son with us and he kept on knocking into the low platform bed (I don't particularly like that style of bed either). The bathroom is rather cell like, although I am sure this may be perceived as minimalist. The bedroom was soulless with odd drapery on the walls that I am sure was to mask a cement wall maybe. We had a knock on our door at midnight on one of the nights. I went to see who it was and it was a random man who eventually called someone to ask what floor they were on and he went away. It was ok but a little alarming at first. For the business traveler it may be your answer if you are looking for somewhere near the airport, reasonably priced and has reasonable food options on your doorstep. There is also a Ralph's supermarket right next door which has a Starbucks within it. It is open from about 6am-2am which is great if you have jet lag and get the munchies. Not sure if the Starbucks is open during those hours but the supermarket has a great food offering. We had planned on just staying for a couple of nights here and then moved onto the Kinney hotel (refurbished motel) just off Abbott Kinney which was amazing. Excellent option for families. Collapse
