You get what you pay for! The shuttle that took us to LAX was going 20 miles per hour from the front lobby to LAX. It was making funny sounds. The driver looked concern while driving the shuttle. I was worried the shuttle was not going to make it the airport and I will miss my flight. 11 days later... I called to get picked up. I was informed that the shuttle will be in terminal 3 in 20 minutes and my vehicle will be ready upon my arrival... 50 minutes later the shuttle finally arrived. When I got to the hotel, my car was not there. Waited another 10 minutes for them to retrieve it. When I finally got my truck... what... lots of bird droppings! I left a decently clean exterior and I got a truck attacked by birds with diarrhea! Thanks Custom Hotel for the terrible experience! Never Again!!!! Collapse

In theory, the Custom is a great idea: a hip, quirky property near the airport, but far enough away to give it access to restaurants, Playa del Rey, Marina del Rey, and Venice. The hotel is managed by Joie-de-Vivre, a chain that aims to offer boutique-on-a-budget properties, and has a lively pool, friendly staff, and large rooms. All good, but it doesn't make up for beat-up rooms, dirty elevator cabs, dingy hallways, and an initial renovation (who knows how long ago) that relied on surface treatments to paper over the more fundamental flaws of an older building (such as ancient elevators, odd bathooms, and rooms that cry out for more than paint to soften their spaces). The lights are kept dim in hallways and rooms for atmospherics, but probably also as an attempt to diminish the actual state of the building. It wouldn't take much to raise the bar here, but for now, this is a discount property with a dash of panache, and nothing more. Collapse

I have stayed in this hotel previously and it seems that the shuttle service has been downgraded. First I will address the shuttle issue, then my opinion about rooms. The travel and the experience in any hotel begins with transportation. To have a shuttle service is definitely a plus in LAX surroundings, but if the service is deficient the overall evaluation can't be good. The van that pick up guests has to be loaded from the front , it means that the baggage has to be lifted 70cms or 30 inches aprox considering the bus has 3 steps from ground to the seats area. You expect some courtesy from the driver to put the bags inside, specially after a long flight or if for some reason you are not able to do it. (I wonder if those guys are hired ONLY to drive or if their manual considers loading and unloading baggage. According to the hotel one of their duties is to assist passengers to load the luggage in the vehicle). Last time of my visit the driver was comfortably waiting in the bus for the passengers to lift the baggage. Not even the intention to help. Asked the driver to help me w/ my bag but he just stared and wait for my effort to lift it up to the 3rd step or the bus, to handle my bag to his hands in order to accomodate it inside. As I tried to do the trick to lift and to incline my self to put my bag in the first step of the bus, the weight (44 lbs) unbalanced me and I fell to the ground. The driver even seeing what has happened didn't say a word. Nothing. A fellow guest helped me to stand again and the only way the driver descended "from heaven" was because of my complaint and other guests. As soon as arrived to the hotel complained to front desk and manager on duty. They were helpful and took me to a drugstore to buy some ointment for bruises. As I was in a connection didn't want to mess with doctors etc. I don't know if the hotel, which hires another company for shuttle services, is really able to improve in this matter. TIP: check shuttle schedules, it could run every 30 or 45 minutes. Rooms: the building is old but is perfectly fine for one or two days, specially if you are connecting, as in my case. They have two kinds of beds elevated and "futon" style bed. Both are ok but the elevated ones feel better. This opportunity I was in 5th floor. Some noise could be heard but nothing that prevents you to sleep or to relax in the room. It has a training room that could be improved. A pool deck that looks nice but I haven't tried my self. My rating for Custom Hotel this time is a 3 based on my experience w/ shuttle. My suggestion is : if you have back problems, leg problems or you think you can't lift your baggage to the tricky steps consider another property and save yourself from falling, fractures, hernias and so on. There are very nice places too in El Segundo area w/ may have a better shuttle / driver service. Collapse
