Was here in late June for a conference. We arrived very late at night and the front desk staff was welcoming and helpful. Our two other interactions with the front desk staff were also positive (one of those interactions sent us a block down the street for a fabulous breakfast). We also really appreciated the bell staff. Shared a few laughs with them and they were handy with a recommendation more than once. Great customer service there. The conference facility on the second floor was tidy and more than adequate for our large group. The hotel staff assigned to work hospitality outside the ballrooms were polite, helpful and attentive. The rest of the story is not so positive. The lobby of the hotel smelled damp immediately and that did not go away until the last of our four day visit. We stayed in room 719 and It was simply dirty. The mirror over the desk had dust all over it. There was something sticky in one spot of the floor which remained there through three housekeeping visits. The edges of the carpet and corners of the room were dusty...like nobody was ever gone around the edges with a carpet tool. The bed itself was hard as a brick and encased in plastic so it crunched and crackled when you moved in it. Even the headboard attached to the wall was dirty. I don't want to think about it. The bathroom floor and the soap dish had hair in them and the grout around the soap dish was covered in mold and mildew. The water must be treated because no matter how I tried, shampoo didn't want to lather and my hair felt flat and dirty for our entire visit. Even the shower curtain hooks were a mismatched mess, with some broken. The bar of soap at the sink did not get replaced once. Good thing we brought our own. Another quirk is that there is no fan or other way to air out steam from the bathroom or the room in general. It felt like mildew hanging in the air all day. Sorry but one more gripe about the room. It had only one small window for natural light. Even with every light on in the room, it still felt dark. Maybe it's a good thing it wasn't brighter as I would have noticed the lack of cleanliness even more. As if the cleanliness of the room wasn't bad enough, once you walk out the front doors and turn to the left toward Royal St, the smell of urine is overwhelming for nearly the entire block. It seems the homeless like to congregate here...probably due to the McDonalds right next door. I understand this could present a challenge but handle it! A power washer with HOT water should be used on this area every day. If fast food restaurants can do this with their sidewalks, surely thus hotel can handle it too. We literally had to dash through this area as the acidic smell or urine was overwhelming. I saw other posts about the rough crowd outside the front doors and agree. The bell staff inside the hotel was fabulous but the valet crew outside should probably be trained to know when and how to handle the vagrants. We noticed other hotels had doormen to alleviate the issue. Astor does not and consequently there is a problem. The most uncomfortable we felt in the entire city was in trying to get through the rowdy crowd of vagrants at the front door. We will return to NOLA for a visit again soon but will not choose this hotel and cannot recommend it to others. Collapse

Spent 3 nights at Crowne Plaza Astor in New Orleans. Found the hotel OK, could be better, here is what I liked and did not like: Liked: - The location, at the end of Bourbon street, which means you are in the French Quarter, and yet at the same time it's still relatively quiet because this is at the end of the street - the restaurant downstairs is good, had dinner there, excellent oysters and fish, but there is one problem (see below) - overall the hotel is nice, I found the staff helpful Did not like: - the AC in the hotel and especially in the restaurant, way too cold; having breakfast in a fridge is not enjoyable, regardless of how good the breakfast is. Could not wait to be done and get out. - there was a smell of rotten food/mold in the hallway leading to my room. I noticed the smell on the second day, and the staff took care of it by blowing some air/drying with a fan, but only on the third day. Not a nice smell when you walk out of your room. - a metal door underneath the AC control unit in the room was removed and put on the floor by someone on the second day, they did not put it back before I checked out ..not an hazard, but it is not especially nice to see wires hanging from the wall in front of your bed. Great stay. Great location

Great hotel. Friendly staff. Clean room. I was surprised how well maintained the hotel is situated at the end of bourbon street. Has a restaurant on the first floor which is semi pricey but convenient. Overall I was satisfied with my stay.
