A Little Skanky, but Good Location

We didn't intend to stay at the La Concha, but ended up there after a wedding party resulted in our forced relocation from the Southernmost House (which we were enjoying immensely). This was the "alternate property" they selected for us - to resolve their booking mishap. So essentially, we got kicked out of the Southernmost House and dumped into the La Concha. It's not entirely bad. The lobby and common areas are updated - and at least give the appearance of opulence, but the rooms are pretty old and skanktastic. Our room had been repainted so many times, it looked like the entire space had been coated in brown and white FlexSeal. There was no continental breakfast - though they did have a decent restaurant where we somehow managed to spend $40 on fruit and oatmeal, but what the heck, it's Key West. Parking was, of course, exorbitant ($27) and valet only. The only good thing was the location - right in the middle of the action on Duvall and a quick walk to Mallory Square. The view was pretty rough too. Considering that our view from the Southernmost House overlooked the pool and the ocean, the grungy rooftop view from the La Concha was quite underwhelming (see photo taken from inside our room). All things considered, we would consider the La Concha a tertiary option at best. Ick! Collapse

We booked this hotel as many have said for the proximity to the action of Duval street. Being just a block or so from Sloppy Joes, a stones throw from Fat Tuesday's puts you right near the action. We booked a king room, which did have a small fridge and a safe. I cant speak for other room types but if you want a spacious, don't have to turn sideways to get between the bed & TV/fridge stand and finagle your way to get in the shower i would choose a different room type or different hotel. Also the other thing the wife found odd was the total lack of dresser space, besides the two drawers in the one nightstand there was a total lack of it. If however your looking for a place right near the action of Duval and looking for a place to sleep and take a break from non stop partying this is the spot. They also have a electric car shuttle that can take you up/down Duval to their sister properties. Please don't get me wrong we totally enjoyed our stay here and its our new spot to stay in Key West but just be be prepared for smallish rooms. Finally, we just wanted to thanks JAMES at the front desk you were wonderful and whether or not you'll remember us we'll remember you. Thanks for taking the time to ask about our day/night and always having a smile on your face. FORE! Collapse

In the middle of Duval street, where it happens. Hotel is clean, staff is nice and friendly. If something, the bathroom are a bit smallsize. We did at first get a room that was beeing repainted, the room was not marked for maintance. Staff found an other room right a way and as a complimentary we got two breakfast coupons. It was vell handled, we checked in way before check-in time also. There can on some days take some time to get seated and to get the ordered food. That was no problem for us. We really enjoyed our stay here for to days and are now at another hotel in Key West. Starbucks and Jumbojuice in addition to the hotel. They have a boogitrolley that takes you up and down the Duvalstreet, of you dont want to walk. Collapse

It should get 5 star plus from us however the continuous noise in early morning waking us up and could not go back to sleep. The check in was very fast and we mentioned to her that we are Platinum Member then she gave us free breakfast for 2. Therefore it is worth it ask. There are only valet parking which cost $26 + taxes and tips. This hotel is a "historic" hotel and even it is old but everything was fine until 6 AM next morning. We woke up due to the big noise from the ceiling and at first we thought it was from trash hauling from the street or nearby. In addition, the were several noise under the floor which we were not sure exactly location, we guessed along the airflow from the duct underneath the floor that's why it was not stay at the same location. I came down letting the front desk know and our room is 215. One person came up and told us that it seems the heater kicked on and causing the noise and since this is a historic hotel they can not remodel much. The noise continue running all the morning until we checked out. Only thing I got was the free parking. I warned the front desk "don't let the next customer stay in this room" but they seemed not interesting and thought I want compensate more. On the plus side, the breakfast was good and the price is very decent. The waiter is excellent so even the coupon including taxes and tips, we still gave the waiter $5 extra, sorry I did not remember his name but we were there on Tuesday 11/15. We were able to use the 2 resorts at two end of the "island" along Duval Street for free and took the shuttle for free. The Duval street is filled with a lot of stores and restaurant and safe walk around. Overall, I highly recommend this hotel. Collapse

This is a full service hotel in an older historical building. It has strengths and weaknesses. I want to give my reviews by category. Generally speaking I do recommend the property. • check-in - superb, friendly, efficient • room - our suite was spacious and comfortable - decor is slightly dated • bed - comfortable • bathroom - very functional- towels are stored in vanity drawers - shower seal could have been better • housekeeping/room cleanliness- fair - someone's eyeliner makeup brush was on the carpet (it blended with the carpet but a good vacuuming would have found it). We got a free iPhone charger left by a prior guest (not a positive). Desktop glass was dusty. Windows to our room were really filthy. Some days we got a bath mat - some days not. To be a truly first class hotel, this area needs to improve quite a bit. • internet - poor and slow throughout the property. Intermittent or non-existing in my room. Easily improved with a distributed router system and much fatter data pipe coming into the property. In today's age there is no excuse for this. I have had better connections in the developing world. • food/beverage - excellent and well priced. • perfect for a quick break • management - visible and helpful - clearly cares about staff and guests. This hotel has a lot to like and a few things to improve. Overall I recommend this property and with the current GM and owner support, I am confident it will continue to get better and better.
