I stayed in this hotel last night. The hotel is situated in a beautiful country side, with narrow roads. Peaceful and scenic surroundings. There were ample parking spaces. The restaurant food was excellent. The food went down a treat! The staff were very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, the lift was out of use and I had to climb to second floor with my heavy suite cases. One of the hotel staff was willing to assist me but I declined, I later regretted that decision. I hope they sort out the lifts soon. The bed rooms were quite spacious with modern amenities. Was quite, comfy and well ventilated. I highly recommend this hotel for those who want peace and quiet! Stayed here for 1 romantic weekend in May. On arrival My wife and I had to wait in a queue to check-in, for 10 minutes. There were only 2 other people in front. After being given our room keys the told that our 3rd floor room should be lovely and quiet we were given directions to the lifts. They were broken. 1 of the 2 lifts was in operation but it only went to the second floor. As the lift doors closed we realised the inside of this lift was infested with flies. No joke there were about 15 flies buzzing around our heads. It was awful. After ascending the stairs to the top floor we got to our room - which was actually very nice - albeit quite a long trek from the front desk. Later that evening we went down to the bar and bought a vodka/coke and a glass of soda. Charged 8 GBP for the privilege. We queried it to be told it should have been half that price and the staff (all 4 of them) proceeded to take 10 minutes to undo the charge. After our drinks we went exploring. The grounds are lovely. We went into the property next door (Heythorp Park) only to find the most run-down building I've ever been in. Each bar/lounge was an empty run-down room. We quickly realised that going back to our hotel was best. Checked out the Restaurant menu and didn't see anything we liked so we returned to eat in the bar. The menu looked OK for what it was. ordered the Cajun Chicken burger and Pulled Pork Nacho's - with garlic bread. Oh boy. What a disaster. The Chicken in the burger was nice but the bun and garnishing were horrible. The nacho's were inaudible due to the sickly sweet sauce (bbq?) mixed into the pork. And the Garlic bread (at nearly 4 GBP) was 2 slices of something from Iceland. Extremely poor show. We didn't eat it and complained. They did refund the nachos. Time for an early night. Off we went. But no. The conference centre - directly below us on the ground floor had a Disco. From 8 pm to midnight it boomed through the room. Our lovely quiet room became neither lovely or quiet. In the morning we went to breakfast in the restaurant. Nic e Buffet spread. Took 10 minutes for somebody to get me coffee's. went to the full english buffet section. no eggs, no mushrooms and no tomatoes. Just bacon and 2 types of sausage. (Crowne Plaza: the 'traditional english' sausage is really not nice). On finishing my slice of bacon and 2 sausages I had spied new scrambled eggs that had just been bought out. My favourite. I rushed over to serve up a plate for myself. Got back to my table and tasted them. stone cold. really! I briefly mentioned the building next door being run down. this was also true of the restaurant. At least 3 other couples commended on the holes in the wall and lack of paint. The chairs look like they had not been reupholstered for 50 years. It was really grotty. Now I don't often write reports this damming. But I do stay in a lot of hotels and give good business to this industry. My honest opinion is that this hotel needs to close its doors for 6 months and complete a full refurbishment. Including decent eating options. Its a captive audience at your location in the middle of nowhere. don't take advantage of this fact. Great food and Good sleeping arrangements makes everybody happy. We arrived to be told that we had a lovely room on the very quiet third floor, but there was only one lift working that only went to the second floor. When we finally found the lift it was full of small flies, not a nice experience, we then eventually found the stairs up to the third floor. The room was nice enough, but there was a tear on the duvet cover and although the bathroom was fairly new there was already black in the corner of the tiles. But all that was fine, the bad part of the stay began when we went to get dinner in the bar. First of all they tried charging us £8 for a coke and a lime and soda, when questioned it was all of a sudden £5.50. Its a very limited menu, I chose the pulled pork nachos and a side of garlic bread and my husband had the chicken burger. The pulled pork on the nachos was so sickly I don't know how any one could have enjoyed it and the garlic bread was two slices of quite dry, quite tasteless bread that looked no better than supermarket bought bread. They agreed to refund both items to their credit and I got the impression they get complaints quite often. Its also horrendously over priced. I would absolutely recommend finding dining options outside of the hotel if you have to stay here. Later that evening we were kept awake by what sounded like a nightclub downstairs, obviously some event taking place in the hotel. Breakfast was pretty poor too, the restaurant is really shabby, the chairs are all worn and the general upkeep looks really untidy, we heard the people next to us commenting on the same. The food wasn't great, as soon as fresh eggs/tomatoes were put out they were already cold. Just not worth spending the extra money on. We did make the check out staff aware of all this when we checked out but they didn't seem too bothered. I would not stay here again. Its very overpriced for what it is and some areas are in desperate need of refurbishment. Collapse
