They say "minimalistic", I say it it is bedroom refurbishment on the cheap

Firstly I am not Liv, I am her Dad. My wife and I had a leisure one night break at the Heythrop Park Hotel (the Crown Plaza is in the same complex). The pro's were that this is a fantastic house in beautiful grounds with a lovely golf course. It was designed by the Assistant to the Architect for Blenheim Palace (maybe not as ornate as Blenheim, but very nice). The breakfast was very good with good service. The con's were that there were no lifts and our bedroom was a long distance and upstairs from the reception. As there were no obvious help we asked a passing Manager to help us with our luggage. The big disappointment was the bedroom; it might be described by others as being minimalistic but it was all poor quality and design. It had been recently refurbished but I wish they had spend more money on the fittings and design. For example the shower room did not have any tiles it was all the MFI pretend wood tiles, including the wet room floor. There were no shelves near the wash-basin, the only shelf was behind the toilet. There was no where to hang towels properly as again the towel rail was behind the toilet, and you could not hang anything on it. Only one chair in the room and an air extractor in the shower which sounded like a gurgling plumbing pipe. Sorry to say but a Premier Inn or Travel Lodge bedroom beats the Heythrop Park bedroom hands down. Collapse

My wife and I have have just completed a two day conference at this venue. Really good auditorium and break out rooms, with comfortable chairs. The delegate conference lunches were exceptional, and beautifully served in the stylish and relaxing courtyard. Service throughout the conference by the hotel staff was outstanding. My wife personally thanked the conference manager, but we also wanted to share our experiences on TripAdvisor. Collapse

Of all the reviews I have done on Tripadvisor over the years this one has proven to be one of the most challenging, with several good points but equally with several not-so-good points!! On the positive side . . . A lot of the staff were really nice, especially those in the front desk and in the bar. They were always cheerful and when we had a problem with the airco the front desk staff, and the Duty Manager that we also spoke to, went out of their way to try to sort things out for us very quickly and efficiently! Also on the positive side the location of the hotel and the facilities available are great - it is waaay in off the road and is set in rolling grounds, with a golf-course, spa and swimming pool, and is attached to a fabulous Manor next door. The hotel itself is also quite spacious, and there are plenty of areas where you can get away from the hustle of the bar or just get away from other people, and to have a quite drink with friends if you want to! On the negative side. . . . The room we stayed in was not big, by any means or by comparison with several other Crowne Plaza hotels we have stayed in, and although probably fine for an overnight, or possibly two nights at a pinch, I suspect that it would be quite claustrophobic and more than a little irritating for any period longer than that! On top of that the hotel has seen fit to screw shut the windows in the bedroom we were in (supposedly to make the airco work better!) but that means that there is no possibility to get fresh air into the room at all, which, when it gets hot, doesn't really help the overall stay/sleeping experience at all.!! Having mentioned some positive aspects of the staff, I'd have to say that I think that some of those serving meals in the function rooms could learn a lesson from some of their colleagues elsewhere in the hotel. They are obviously under great pressure to 'deliver' when catering for a crowd, but their 'table clearing routine' and almost robotic and cheerless manner really needs to be balanced with a view as to what is actually happening on the table itself and with the notion of providing a pleasant eating experience for guests, even if that is as a guest in a large group! For example, while we were there on several occasions side plates with bread were simply removed from tables without asking whether the person dining was finished with them, simply because of the seeming rush of the staff to clear up between courses! It may be hotel training and/or policy for dealing with large groups, and it may well work super-efficiently for the management of the mass catering, but several times people at tables I was at, or tables I was looking at, were left looking in bemusement at this example of 'service'! On the whole, if I could, I would probably award the hotel a 3.5 star rating, but certainly not more than that on the basis of our stay! Collapse

Seldom do I ever resort to awarding just two stars as I wouldn't want to mislead any readers, just because it wasn't our cup of tea doesn't mean others mightn't enjoy it?! After all this hotel is linked to the Heythrop Park Hotel one of the most stunning Hall Hotels I've seen set in acres of wonderful parkland. You could imagine the Hall being featured in Downton however it's resort partner the Crowne Plaza is a bit of a 60's/70's concrete bolt on.... The decor is pretty garish from reception to the bedroom corridors, our bedroom was spacious albeit with a pillar right smack bang in the middle, twin comfy Double Beds... The room needs more lighting, ladies do not like poor lighting.... Tea and coffee facilities, flat screen TV's, a Safe and small fridge our all welcome features. The Bathroom with walk in shower c/w rainwater shower was a really good size... Simple additions like a towel hook on the wall close to where you exit would make a big difference. Food wise I can only comment on the Breakfast which was extremely tasty! I often refer to 1/2 points as this would be a 2.5... Collapse

I had a trip with my friends. On arrival our room which was lovely had no aircon and after 3 hours we were eventually offered a cracked window and desk fan as there were no other available rooms. The next problem was at dinner, prebooked for 3 guests but when we arrived there was no table for us, the solution was 2 large round tables pushed together, but this would mean one was sitting very much out of the conversation! 2 bottles of wine were offered as compensation for the air con and the table. But when we came to settle the bill it hadn't been sorted so we were embarrassed by the waiter questioning our honesty. The next day at the spa, the massage definitely had a "conveyer belt" approach and quite impersonal, 2 staff members were good to us, the maintenance man trying to fix the air con and the pool attendant lady who was attentive and asked if we needed anything. Otherwise the service was not what I expect from a 4* hotel offering spa breaks, the little things make a difference in customer service Collapse
