Clean and nice

I stop here not the first time. The room is nice, clean and quiet. Good breakfast. No complaints. Although the hotel is not in the center, it is not torn from life. But the concept of city center is not clear in Helsinki.. everything is close

Courteous staff from the moment we stepped into reception, we had a super room on the 9th floor with sweeping views of Helsinki. Whilst I would agree that this particular Club Lounge does not have the greatest selection of alcohol it is open all day, so you can pop in for a coffee/snack. We used the sauna & pool, whizzing down in the lift almost door to door. The bed was one of the most comfortable I have ever had in a hotel. We liked the position of the hotel as we could walk to dinner through the park opposite the hotel. And the Finnsair bus back to the airport stops outside.A great hotel in every way Collapse

We are concerned about the Crowne Plaza brand and image after our recent stay in the Crowne Plaza Helsinki. Having stayed 3 nights total and checked out almost two weeks ago, we'd have to say the stay is still niggling us as a very unsatisfactory end to our European travels. When a lovely staff member asked at check out if we'd enjoyed our stay - we had to say 'honestly - not so much' and that we were very disappointed with a hotel we assumed would be 5 stars based on past experience of Crowne Plazas. Why did we say that? The hotel itself is a perfectly acceptable 4-5 star hard product - though getting a bit tired in the lobby (wear and tear that's just not being fixed - drink rings on tables etc). The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom amenities were lovely - so the Club Room was fine. But the hotel in our opinion is pushing to reach 4 stars. In response we were told simply that "Finland doesn't do star ratings for its hotels". (Having stayed there now, I can see why - half would have to close due to public opinion). But that to us is an unacceptable 'excuse' - the whole reason to choose an international chain (a brand? an image?) is to know, within fairly narrow parameters, what you expect and what you will get. Well to be honest, this hotel is scraping the bottom of the 4 star barrel. We found the entire approach to be very 'nickel & diming' - from offering an upgrade at check-in then advising the fee (not insignificant after the price of the room), to telling us at checkin that we could have breakfast in either the Club Lounge or the buffet - turns out due to a rate mix up we only had breakfast included on day 1 (it was two bookings that we'd had to link to ensure we kept the same room). When we quizzed Reception on the 3rd morning about our name not being on the list in the buffet restaurant, we were told it wasn't included and would cost an additional 92 euro for the 2 days of breakfast. We discussed it and explained that the staff member at check in had told us on day 1 that we could eat breakfast in either spot (or and I quote 'both if we wanted'). Eventually we were told we were 'lucky' and that the 92 euro wouldn't be charged to our account. We simply explained that we'd received the benefit of either/or breakfast dining in the past with club rooms and didn't think it unusual at all - that there was nothing 'lucky' about it. Even when we checked out there was a beer on the minibar bill which we had to dispute and have removed (it was a club room... when we wanted to drink a beer we could manage to wait til 6 pm in the lounge). That's only a teeny issue - but with the other issues it was just a pain - a bit like the swimming pool being maintained and unavailable for our stay and a significant period around it. The club lounge was incredibly stingy on eats and drinks compared to other Crowne Plazas internationally and other hotel chain club lounges - first night was pizza and cheese (no crackers), second night after complaining to management, it was pizza and cheese - with crackers. Third night we had a change and went to quiche and cheese and crackers. Drinks available were white/red wine and beer. Overall a thoroughly disappointing experience that has made us rethink our view of the Crowne Plaza brand in particular and IHG internationally in general. It was expensive and not worth it. A complete lack of bang for buck. Collapse

We stayed at this hotel a few years ago and decided to come back to it for a weekend retreat holiday because we love swimming and it had a pool. We were bitterly disappointed on arrival to be told that the pool was under maintenance and out of use. We learned from this experience that never presume that on return to a hotel you previously liked, that their facilities are up and running like last time. The hotel does not inform you beforehand, so in the future we will have to directly contact each hotel we visit and ask if eg. their pool is in use to avoid such a slap in the face on arrival. Unfortunately we had not thought to check their website beforehand - we presumed all was like last time which was a mistake. Nevertheless, we were determined to enjoy our stay and the good points about this hotel are a large well-equipped gym and sauna in the basement floor. Across the road there is a small lake with a path around it which we jogged around each morning - about 2,7 km. The breakfast has good quality food. We especially liked the various delicious types of fresh bread and the fresh fruit salad. The location is quiet so we slept well. It is slightly out of the city centre so it is more peaceful but close enough to easily walk to. Collapse
