A poor choice in DC, if you value your time at all

I stay in DC about once a week, but this was my first time staying at The Hamilton Crowne Plaza. I'll never come back, at this price. I'll start with the nice things about this hotel: + attractive design aesthetics + friendly staff + good shower + good location and views + fast, reliable internet My complaints: - tiny rooms, even by DC standards. The Embassy Suites three blocks away has rooms that are three times as large, for a lower price, plus they include breakfast and cocktails with your room. There is another Crowne Plaza closer to the airport that has much larger rooms, at half the price. Those are just two examples. - the elevators break frequently. We had an hour wait for an elevator one afternoon, and the hotel did nothing to help with the situation. According to other guests, this is a frequent occurrence here. Even if that hearsay is untrue, for us to be delayed an hour without any form of consideration or even apology is unacceptable at this level of hotel. An hour - forty seven minutes to be honest - is a long time to have stolen from your day for an elevator. I eventually took the stairs, after having to go to the front desk to ask where they were, and if I could, which also took more time than it should because he had to check with someone to see if I was allowed to take the stairs. - Even the Starbucks at this hotel doesn't value your time. The room is so small that I had to get out of it as soon as I could in the morning to get some work done while my wife slept. I went to the Starbucks in the lobby at 6am, when they were supposed to open and was told that she was closed. I asked when she opened, and she told me that she opened at 6, but wouldn't be today because she was the only one there. I then proceeded to leave, and she yelled at me for opening her door to leave. Instead of being apologetic for not being opened on time, or allowing me to sit and work while she finished opening up, she acted like I was a criminal for trying to go out a door that might make it appear that they were open and would draw other customers that she wasn't ready for. - $53 for valet parking is about $5 higher than all the surrounding hotels, and at least $15 more than you can park in a nearby garage for. This hotel is not terrible. Most of the staff is friendly. It just is not worth what they charge, doesn't respect their guests time, and is not up to DC standards. I recommend that you stay elsewhere. Collapse

Folks traveling with kids, this review is for you. Mom, Dad, 4 teenagers, 2 rooms, 4 days , 2000 miles away from our home. We have credibility on this one for sure. The staff at the Hamilton Crowne were awesome and patient. Rooms super comfortable. The location perfect relative to both the DC Circulator, taxi, and Metro, and walking. The longer we stayed, the more family friendly eating places were found within 3 blocks. &Pizza, Jimmy Johns, Subway, the Schwarma place at the metro entrance, and of course 5 Guys. There is even two drug stores nearby with grocery. Much of this seems missing from Google Maps, which led me to worry that I would only have expensive choices. Lots to choose from. Suggest folks relax about the elevator reviews. They are cramped and slow and weird, but that makes it fun and charming and a unique way to meet folks. Just be patient and flow with the process. It will only cost you a couple moments at worst. Location near park and Metro made panhandler dodging a bit of sport, which I regarded as slightly more challenging than the darn elevators. I really liked the security of knowing they took a room key to work. The discount at Starbucks was a lifeline for those of us who are caffeine addicted. And, oh yes the doormen and restaurant staff deserve a shout out also (thanks Oscar). We landed at DCA, rode Blue line to McPhearson, walked out to the street, and were a block away from the entrance. Reversed that to get back to DCA. Wore out our DC metro cards to get around town, but always able to easily Blue Line back to the hotel. Very pleased and grateful for how we were treated. Collapse

The Hamilton Crowne Plaza is a historic hotel from the 1920’s that has been renovated with a modern, boutique hotel feel; while retaining the classic charm. The location was convenient, being very close to the White House and an easy walk to the National Mall. The reception staff were friendly and efficient both on arrival and departure. The concierge was extremely helpful with directions (he actually walked us to the sidewalk to make sure we started in the right direction). The standard room was spotless and generously sized, with a desk and sofa. The bath was also comfortably sized, with a separate vanity area. Very comfortable stay and having a full Starbucks in the lobby was an added bonus. Collapse
