We visited this newly refurbished hotel in Stevenage old town. within a few minutes walk, there are local pubs and eateries but we didn't try them as the adjoining restaurant Rump and Wade was so good that we ate there throughout our weekend stay. We were met at reception by a very friendly and polite receptionist who dealt with us and described the bars and dining facilities to us. The bedroom was half way down a corridor with occupied rooms on either side but we were not disturbed by any noise throughout our stay. The room itself was spacious with some obvious thought having been put into the recent refurbishment and being able to control the lights from the bed is a nice touch. All the staff were excellent throughout our three days stay from the chambermaids who greeted us as we passed, through the bar and waitressing staff to the managers who took their time to introduce themselves and ensure that we were happy. The food served in Rump and Wade the restaurant was as I would expect in any restaurant charging much more for the privilege of eating there. The restaurant was full when we arrived but we were asked to sit in the spacious and very well kept bar while we waited ten minutes to be seated for what was an excellent meal. The wedding organiser did a sterling job to make sure that everything went perfectly on the day, from breakfast time right through the whole ceremony and the evening meal to the evening entertainment, she deserves an award for her dedication and eye for detail. It's rare to come across a whole team approach like the Cromwell seems to have got together and we will definitely return to visit when we are next in Hertfordshire. We'd like to thank Dean and Gareth and all the staff for a wonderful weekend and would definitely recommend the Cromwell for short stays or as a base to visit the local area and it is only a short distance from Luton airport. I stayed here for one night in early August 2017 in the Naseby Suite. Pardoning the 1645 reference but this isn’t a battle the Hotel Cromwell has won. It’s obvious as you walk through the hotel that the paint is barely dry on a refit of the common parts of the hotel. The décor has been done well throughout the parts I saw. Sadly this doesn’t make up for the other issues. Room The first thing which hit me when I walked into my room was how cold it was. Normally that’s not a worry for me. It was early August but wet and chilly outside. The single glazed windows fit so poorly they wouldn’t close and consequently were letting the heat out and the cold and street noise in. Added to that the panes were single glazed and the condensation was running down the insides of the windows. I wouldn’t have expected the heating to be on in August and it wasn’t which meant there was no warming the room up. The bed was hard and the bedside lights so tall that you couldn’t reach them to turn them on and off without getting out of bed. lastly for the bedroom there was an incessant fan noise from the room below which didn’t stop all night. I’m not sure where to start with the bathroom. Again nice décor but a really terrible bathroom: 1) The basin was tucked into a small alcove behind the door 2) The mirror wasn’t heated so steamed up 3) The extractor fan was not working which added to the mirror steaming up 4) There was no rail to hang the towels on 5) There was no practically usable shelf to put toiletries on 6) The hot water took more than five minutes to run to the point where I could take a shower 7) The shower jets were so intense they felt like needles 8) There was no non-slip mat in the bath or handles to help you get out easily 9) There is limited head room in the shower so anyone over 4 feet high is going to need to incline the shower all the way back to avoid the needle-like shower hitting something tender – that means the shower hits the back wall and runs onto the floor 10) There are no flannels 11) There was one set of towels for a double room. There’s a bar just off reception that was unstaffed when we arrived but on enquiry it turns out is not a bar or not the main one. The in-house restaurant, the Rump and Wade, has a separate review but was just as terrible as the room and bathroom. Service Just as bad as the rest of the hotel. It took over five minutes to checkout because the reception was disorganised and insisted in processing the Expedia payment while I was checking out. Summary Best avoided. Collapse

On Saturday I organised afternoon tea for 50 hens as my daughter is getting married soon. The sandwiches were fresh and cakes and scones were also fresh and plentiful. The staff were amazing, the attention they gave to all was great, from serving drinks to making sure everyone had sufficient food. The age group was between 4yrs and 85years, I can't recommend this highly enough for the value for money. A big thank you to Dean and his team from 50 happy Hens. Collapse

From reception was a bit of a mystery tour climbing to the first floor along corridors and then back down again but it was all worth it. The room was very spacious well equipped and clean. The large bathroom had a bath with shower over it. The breakfast had a large selection buffet of hot and cold food and the evening meal was very good value for money and served by very cheery and polite staff 10/10 Overall this was a very enjoyable stay and I certainly hope to return soon. One piece of advice to the management if it is possible to create another entrance to the new wing from the car park would be a big help. Collapse
