Cannot rate the hotel high enough. We came for a wedding and I must say, the hotel and staff were fantastic. The setting was perfect with some fantastic views. The food was out of this world with the drinks to suit. We stayed the Dugdale room and has the fortune of visiting friends in some of the other rooms and there wasn't a bad one among them. Every room was different but that's was makes this hotel individual. If I could give more than 5 stars I would. Collapse

We stayed as marrying grooms for two weeks in this beautiful country house after choosing to host our wedding here nearly 2 years ago. We were initially won over by the warm welcoming staff to whom had a really close family feel to them and a warmth of service which felt very genuine, coupled with some delicious dishes by the head chef Alan, and to find out that 3 of the team where to have their wedding at the same place they worked, we couldn’t see how we could refuse to book this special venue and we are so glad we did. It is a stunningly beautiful building which feels more like you're staying in a luxury house than in a hotel, which for me is a complete winner having stayed in many old grand houses as a kid with family and friends. The drawing room in candle light particularly with it's huge looming paintings lit up and large curtains were a real sight on our Saturday night meal lit by 6 huge candelabres. The grounds are also very romantic and the rooms are all beautifully and tastefully decorated, all our guests were raving about the hotel's look and feel, not to mention it's staff which I'll get to. To put a little further into perspective, choosing a venue was a worrying task as one of our backgrounds was mainly in events including some very big weddings regularly over the years, and we knew we would want to do something totally different, so it didn’t feel like a busman’s holiday and as it was a non traditional gay wedding. We had a waitered hot food buffet to a mingling room on Friday, a 2 family breakfasts split up Saturday morning, followed by the Ceremony and a champagne afternoon tea and then a 7 course candlelit dinner for 50 all sat around one long table on the Saturday night. From the start a very competent wedding organiser (Kelly sadly no longer there) at the venue took us through the motions as we planned this large event which we wanted over 3 days with some pre events for close family before. They put together a very reasonable quote quickly and begun to discuss the finer details on our requirements above and it was all booked and ready for us to get on with the hard work of planning and inviting. A very good replacement took over Kelly’s role in Nicola who negotiated the hand over perfectly and continued to be as organised and helpful as her predecessor, with as much knowledge of our event without repeating talks with us. We asked many things of the venue which were very different to their usual way of doing things and Peter the hotel manager was very helpful in working things out so it all went smoothly on the day around what was realistically feasible on the day and honourably even a little bit more in small challenges the team all rose to admirably on the day. Nicola was very good at working closely with us to finalise everything and to discuss away from us with the hotel team all the finer points so we could focus on everything else. Every meeting was professional, organised and every detail was taken on board and actioned without any need for repetition through the process, a very refreshing experience from our past for sure. Notably she also changed our room plan (amongst many other changes) for our guests over 20 times by the final day, including letting us explore nearly every available hotel room to ensure we had got the choices right for our specific guests requirements. Having been in events before and seen overlooked things spoil an event so easily we weren't going to risk not discussing the finer details and the team took it in their stride professionally and with a smile (although I'm sure at times they were banging their heads against a wall, thank you for dealing with the worrier so well by the way) The first proper meeting was with Alan the head chef who talked through all the requirements we wanted, gave us a kitchen tour and jumped passionately at our suggestion that we throw the brochure menu out the window and start from scratch with the very finest and even higher end ingredients. He also jumped at the idea of running a meal for 50 people over 7 courses very much in the style of a tasting menu you’d find in a Michelin rated restaurant. His ability to say yes to everything we wanted was a huge testament to his skill and ability for running the kitchens at this busy hotel we ended up trusting him so much that we didn’t try (deliberately for the surprise) over half the food for the wedding. The food on the actual event was really delicious, and a really high standard even considering the huge 50 covers catering that was being undertaken. I would even add that the hotel had a situation completely out of their control which doesn’t need mentioning (as it only held us all up for 45 minutes) but it happened just as we were about to move to sit for the 7 course meal. Chef Alan (and the front of house team who I’ll get to) didn’t even sweat, remained calm and after the pause where no one could do anything, produced one of the best meals I have ever eaten for that size of party. There was not one single dish which I couldn’t say tasted absolutely delicious, literally every ounce of food that came out for our wedding was moreish and to a very high standard with very good comments from our guests (especially the notoriously hard to please ones) Finally the front of house, reception and waitering team were all exceptional in welcoming our guests and making them feel truly welcome. Particular mentions go out to Earle for his relaxed informal manner which really helped to relax us and make us feel like it was our place as much as any other guests, to Gloria for her very entertaining eccentricity in mothering us as young lads, making sure we ate well at breakfast and generally making a big fuss of us and our guests. To Jordan for his cheeky charm and for helping what seemed like a million suitcases into the building without a single grimace. To Tracey for her unbelievably warm personality making sure everything was always ok and for going that extra mile in printing things out, ensuring letters got sent to people we couldn’t get addresses for and for chatting about things when we needed a warm smile. To Mike for spinning bottles behind the bar, getting in our favourite gin last minute, learning most of our orders, even dancing for us when we all had to wait for 45 mins. And finally my biggest thanks go to Nathan and Scott who ended up being the real go to oranisers and look after’ers on the day. Scott a gentle charming man has a relaxed warm service where you always know you’re in safe hands. He was the voice of reason and calm all weekend we needed. Coming up the ranks Nathan was permanently right by our sides all weekend and he has a beautiful cheeky charm about him making him one of the most popular staff amongst our guests all weekend. Nathan and Scott were both there pre ceremony at the most important part I would say for us, getting us drinks, dealing with a late registrar putting all the events back 30 mins, helping one of us try to tie a cravat and generally just being there to calm us both on a very nerve wracking event. They could easily have just hidden away in the waits before but they were buzzing back and forth ensuring everyone was happy as it all came together for the ceremony. I would genuinely believe though that the majority of their team would have done the same if they were in that role on the day too, the service in this hotel is second to none in my experience and that is why we chose to hold such a special day here. Thank you to the entire team, you deserve every reward of gratitude from your guests, you made us so truly happy and dealt with everything so quickly and professionally and carried out our requests to the letter, we really have no words for what you have done in delivering such a perfect, special, truly memorable weekend for everyone. Thank you Collapse

From the moment of arrival until our departure the service was first class, surroundings beautiful and food sublime. Would not change a thing! Our valentines Dinner was superb and little extra touches added to make it even more romantic.
