We went to this hotel for a colleague's celebratory afternoon tea. The food was lovely and fresh and there was plenty of it. Everything was delicious and they catered for fussy eaters too. It was a Saturday afternoon and the decor and dining room was a lovely calm area. We were not rushed and everybody had a lovely time. Better than some other places in the area. Would definitely recommend. Collapse

We booked direct with the hotel way back in January for a double overnight and paid a non refundable deposit. Price was on par for the area and reviews seemed ok. Our room stunk of cooking from the nearby kitchen vent, so we had to have the courtyard facing window closed so there was no ventilation on quite a warm night. Also, one wall was vibrating with a low droning noise all day until quite late. This was known to the duty manager and was due for repair - perhaps the room should not have been in use. The room was tired especially the shower which was broken with dirty grouting. The sheets were clean and the cleaners were doing a good job. I was given a room change to something more like what I expected you just have to accept that Chelmsford is a busy place and sirens/traffic etc is what to expect. I had asked a few days before to stay an extra night but was told they were booked up although I was offered a cancellation. On arrival a previous client was being offered room changes as there was space in the hotel which seemed to have mysteriously developed lots of vacancies. All staff were polite especially the cleaning staff who were very respectful. The breakfast was a standard offering of continental and english and was good value. The old style toaster could do with an upgrade but this is an aspect that many hotels struggle with. An evening meal in the lounge didn't need a booking, but it was odd that the restaurant was closed - quote "for licensing restrictions" One meal - a simple burger was very nice but my partners Chicken selection was either overcooked or poor quality meat. Presentation was good but the wait of 30mins was not considering the area had only 8 other guests. I think overall not a bad stay but clouded by the issues with the first room and having to move. I was offered help to move but preferred to handle our personal effect myself. I retrospect the offer of a small refund on the room or some other concession might have been nice and not something I was prepared to ask for. A proactive response to such a complaint might be something for management training - it doesn't take much to placate such situations. Collapse

Yesterday, around 50 guests came to my 70th afternoon tea party, held in the Crystal ballroom at this hotel. The whole afternoon, from start to finish absolutely surpassed all my hopes and expectations. The room looked beautiful (partly thanks to Lacey's Event Services) and the food was delicious. The staff, particularly Duty manager Sandeep and waitress Emily were superb, and our every need was met efficiently and pleasantly. The guests made favourable comments, such as 'the best tea party I've ever been to' and ' the smartest tea party'. My husband and I have enjoyed meals in the restaurant and bar over the years we've lived here, and I strongly recommend this hotel . Collapse

I have used this hotel on a number of occasions and each time it has been a real pleasure. From the comfortable and stylish rooms to the quality of food and friendliness of staff, it is truly a wonderful place to stay. My nights sleep was second to none and the breakfast in the morning capped off another superb stay. All staff were friendly and approachable and I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone. We have stayed here several times while visiting family in Chelmsford. Our last stay was in April for 10 days. Our room was a "premium" room, very nice which appeared to be upgraded, comfortable king size bed, and clean. We had a huge bathroom which was nicely tiled with a huge shower and tub. I stayed here a couple of years ago in a different room which was definitely in need of a remodel, so I'm not sure if they have completed all of them yet. Ask them when making a reservation. Their onsite restaurant is a gem and they have a nice lounge area. The food was delicious, prepared very nicely, and the service was excellent. I highly recommend the County Hotel and will definitely stay again in the future. Collapse
