I stayed here 1 night on the 11th October. First Impressions are good ones when you park your car and find the parking bays are a decent size. Then when you walk into the reception you can see that this a nice old building where the decor is light and cheery amd the public areas look very good indeed. Nice and comfortable seating in the loungue and bar area. I only used the dining room for breakfast and if the standard of that was anything to go by then I wpuld imagine that the evening meals would be great. As I have mentioned it let me tell you that the breakfast was excellent. Yu have a choice of continental or cooked. The cooked range is plate service rather than buffet which is good. So you have a choice of english, vegan, salmon, eggs benedict, eggs florentine (which is what I chose and loved them). So much better than a buffet. Of course there is a buffet for cereal, toasts, rolls, fruit and the like too. The service was quiet and polite and charming. The reception gave me a nice friendly welcome on arrival, the check in and out was all quick and efficient too. My room was up at the front of the hotel but the double glazing kept most of the noise out until about 6-6:30 in the morning when I was stirring anyway and I started to hear the occasional bus outside. But most of the rooms are not at the fron but on the wings that extend back so would be much quieter. The room was really nicely furnished and the bathroom was large and spacious too - though with the dormer roof I did have to bend down to use the shower but honestly this was no issue as the room was very comfortable indeed. The price of the place is very fair indeed. It is cheaper then the Premier Inn just down the road and I cannot work out why. The purple palaces are comfortable enough but offer little else in my opinion. The loungue and dining room and food quality here would not be matched at the Premier Inn. The cost of the Travelodge is the cost of the breakfast at the County so strip that away and the become like for like. I can assure you that having stayed at the Travelodge twice I was keen not to do so again. That was much noisier and feels like a barracks by comparison - or a hostel. So of the 3 I would choose the County everytime and hope that work means I need to go back again. I would happily spend the night here with my wife as I think she would have liked it. Collapse

The hotel is well situated and the parking is a real boon. The staff are welcloming and eager to help but there were times that service fell a little short either because of delays, the staff forgot, or failed to pass on the request. The hotel itself is rathered tired decor-wise and we had rather eccentric plumbing in our suite leading to hot water failure in the shower. However we were informed that there is a refurbishment on the way and once we had the hang of the water all was fine. Dietry requests in regard to gluten free was covered but there was inconsistencies as to what was gluten free and what was not.For instance I was informed that the chips were not on our first night but when chips were offered my mistake on another occassion told out that they were gluten free. Gluten free rolls (which were excellent) were available on one occasion over four days otherwise just sliced bread was available. Collapse

Room was very hot (sun through windows and curtains not drawn) and no aircon, also had to ask for fan which they quickly supplied. Room OK and bed comfortable but noise from road not good Collapse

We organised the party ourselves by choosing the Essex Room at the hotel that held 50 people. We visited and met Amy Fifita who showed us the room and then showed us some hotel rooms. We chose our own menu from the main and dessert menus that we had been given. We got our hotel rooms at a special function rate. Amy was very helpful and made sure everything was arranged, even surprising my parents by upgrading the Essex Room to the Crystal Ballroom. This made the day even better and was a lovely thing to surprise my parents with. We had 45 guests in the end and we were very comfortable in the ballroom. The tables had been set as we asked and looked lovely. Sandeep who was the duty manager was extremely attentive on Saturday and made sure everything ran to time for us. All the waiting staff were lovely and very helpful with quick service too. The food was really nice and everyone commented on how good it was. All our guests that stayed were very happy with their hotel rooms too. Thank you County Hotel for your exceptional service! Collapse

The Good:- Located within easy walking distance of beautiful cathedral and sprawling town, rail and bus station. A large sized bedroom and en suite bathroom (Rm 134), plenty of storage space; comfortable bed; excellent room-cleaning service. Welcome bowl of fruit and fresh milk provided in mini bar plus 2 bottles of water. Staff do their best! The Bad:- Miserly portion and disappointing food (ordered in the bar from the a la carte menu on a not busy Saturday evening). For £7 a warm beet salad with rocket and sunflower seed starter consistied of 4 small slices of warm beetroot, a few leaves of salad and half a dozen sunflower seeds For £9 the 3 cheese selection arrived without walnut bread (provided with frozen butter after much ado). A queue at the buffet waiting for cooked English breakfast long before breakfast finished was irritating (we were offered a complimentary English breakfast the following morning to compensate for this saving us about £25). Having to queue to make your own toast was also a disappointment. The Ugly:- Troughs of weeds growing on the roof above the car park entrance door is shabby. The Reception area, lift and general decor is not up to a four star rating. We don't intend to revisit this hotel in the near future. Collapse
