I have just returned from 2 nights at this hotel. The surrounding building site and surroundings can't be blamed on the hotel, but not nice and I would not have liked to walk through the subway type area leading up to it alone especially not at night. On arriving the reception was fine as was the booking in experience. I arrived at my room and on entering was met by a patch of threadbare carpet of which there were other signs in other parts of the room. In the bathroom area, on the floor under the sink area were some pieces of soiled paper which I did not wish to examine more closely for identification purposes and also some hairs and other stains and dirt. Some tiles round the bottom of the bath were broken and had been stuck back on in a haphazard fashion. There was black mold on the ceiling above the shower and also around the bath seal which may have partly been due to the fact that there was no air extraction in the bathroom. There was also a small chunk missing from the bottom of the door. The bin liner was tied in such a way that there was at most an inch of room inside the bin. I was pleased that I had no sanitary products to dispose of. I went back into the main room to discover that the t.v. didn't work and as I had decided to stay at the hotel and eat in the restaurant that night I reported it to reception on the way. Some of the restaurant area was closed, which is fair enough, but the only tables that were offered were either on high bar stools or on low coffee tables. I did however manage to find a normal height table myself and was allowed to sit at it. The meal itself was nice and the staff friendly, although they did not appear to be very organised and the dessert arrived with no means of eating it, so I had to ask at the bar for cutlery. Back to my room and the t.v. was working and continued to work that night and the next morning. I moved the chair away from the desk slightly to put something on it and when I removed my shoes found that there were small bits of rubbish/detritis on the floor that I stood on, leading me to believe that the carpet had either not been hoovered or that the furniture, including chair had been hoovered round. I decided to have a nightcap, but when going to fill the kettle the only way I can describe what I found is that it looked as if someone had boiled milk in it and burned it on the bottom inside. At this point I had changed for bed and was too tired to report it. The following morning at breakfast, it wasn't overly busy and there appeared to be a fair number of staff who were polite and friendly, but it was disorganised. Myself and colleague were asked if we wanted tea or coffee, which was promptly brought to us, but we were given no cups and had to find someone to bring them. I next found someone to ask about orange juice as the contents of the jug next to the orange juice sign looked like grapefruit juice. The staff member confirmed that it was grapefruit and said that the orange juice should be behind the sign, but it was empty. This was promptly refilled, but there were no glasses, so another member of staff had to be asked for glasses. The hash brown receptacle was empty, requiring another request, whereby it was replenished. The rest of the food was warm, just, especially the bacon. On arrival back at the hotel after a day of business I showed the receptionist a photograph of the inside of the kettle and I had not been in my room long before I was provided with a new one. I boiled it and decided to settle down to watch the evening news only to find that the t.v. was not working again. I didnt really want to have to be letting people in to the room to fix it when in my night clothes, so I wiggled the wire on the modem-type thing behind it and after a while it came back on. and kept working until the following morning when it decided that it was a radio and refused to show a picture. The breakfast the next morning was an improvement with them bringing one cup for two of us rather than none, but the food was still luke-warm. I wasn't too happy with the noise levels either. I could actually here the person in the next room urinating and flushing the toilet and other noises, including what sounded like someone dragging furniture around the room. Also banging doors going on sporadically throughout the night up till 3am the second night. The room had a fridge, which could have been useful if I had needed one, but it was noisy and also assisted in keeping me awake. The lifts took a long time to arrive most of the time. On the plus side, the staff were polite, friendly, quick to put things right when reported, but did not seem very organised. The bed was clean and comfortable. If two or three of the aforementioned problems had been present I wouldn't have given them much of a second thought, but added together they did not give anything but a bad impression. I have not formally complained, but have left feedback. If it had been a personal trip that I had paid for myself then I definitely would have complained. Collapse

Do not believe the bad reviews for this hotel. We found everything to be of a good standard, the room was large and spotlessley clean with all the usual refinements you get with a major chain. Aĺl the staff were very friendly and answered any questions with a courteous smile. Breakfast was awesome with smoked salmon and smoked haddock along with full English and continental options, fair enough the parking fees are a little steep but it is the centre of a major city.try it and you will be pleasantly surprised. Location is ideal for the city and although near to major roadways there are no noise problems. The hotel is situated in the middle of a major development of the city centre but although this meant that the direct route to the Town hall complex was in accessible there is an alternative route. Rooms were spacious and well equipped, if a little worn. Breakfast was ideal. Collapse

I stayed here last about 20 years ago, which I suspect is when the walls last saw a lick of paint. The whole hotel is desperately in need of redecoration. There are some positives: Rooms decent size Beds comfortable Many negatives: Shocking car park with very little space Rooms very outdated Shower hardly wets you Electrics look dodgy (see below) Also, with the current redevelopment of Birmingham it's virtually impossible to get to the hotel! Sorry but won't be returning. Collapse

I once stayed in a £10 a night B&B in Blackpool about 20 years ago when on a stag weekend. The room reminded me of this.... The room: Carpet had lifted from the floor, all creased and it was thread bare and stained. Decor was 1990s shabby, dirty and tired. Furniture old wobbly or broken. Bathroom was dirty with tiles coming off the wall and the ceiling, paintwork and sealant was covered in black mold. No aircon and room was very hot, cant open window due to traffic and building work. if your on stag/hen do for the weekend and want cheap in the centre of town then its ok, but would not choose to stay here again on business. I stayed here when it first opened and it was a nice hotel, trouble is I dont think they have spent a penny on it since it opened 20 plus years ago so very tired and dated. Not for me, never again.
