Stayed here for a couple of nights whilst on business. check in was friendly and quick and rooms were clean with windows that actually open! Air conditioning worked well, beds were comfortable and bathroom had amenities (shampoo, etc) and was clean and everything worked. I did however fail to find a way of showering without the water going out of the shower onto the bathroom floor. Luckily there were plenty of towels available. I made use of the Executive club, which as always has some wonderful staff who are always smiling and happy to help. The food in there was very good, although they've now put a water tap in, instead of bottled water. Personal preference, but I do prefer bottled water. Check out was pain free and looking forward to my next trip. Collapse
Not perfect, but very welcome after Frankfurt and Berlin

This Marriott was in some important respects a breath of fresh air after disappointments in Berlin and Frankfurt. To be sure, the check-in was a bit odd - there was clearly something amiss with the reservation system, and at one point we were sure the receptionist was going to tell us there was no room available or something like that. Whatever the problem was, she declined to share it with us and indeed had little to say. Also, our key cards failed to work at the executive lounge (I have platinum Marriott Rewards status). Check-out also didn't go quite as planned, as I was initially charged far more than stated in the reservation, which I had fortunately printed out. I realized the error and returned to reception, the upshot being that my credit card was reimbursed the overcharge, except for a city tax. This is also strange, since the reservation very clearly states, "Estimated government taxes and fees Included." As the amount in question was only EUR 9.40, I did not put up a fight, but in fact there's no way around it - the language on the reservation is crystal clear and we were overcharged. Still, we left not unhappy with the overall experience at this hotel. The room was definitely roomier than in Berlin or Frankfurt, though not on the executive floor despite my platinum status. There was a bathtub, in contrast to the distinctly more expensive room we'd been given in Berlin, though as in Frankfurt the tub also housed the shower and had the usual half-length glass panel that results in water on the floor. And again, there was no apparent way of preventing the room from becoming quickly full of steam. The beds at least were queen-sized, as in Berlin, not the ridiculously tiny beds we'd gotten in Frankfurt. The lounge was so-so. Seating was not a problem on this particular evening/morning. In the evening, they had plenty of things suitable for a vegan or anyone following a healthy diet. Of the two hot dishes, one was chicken and the other rice and mixed vegetables. There were many items for a salad and a few other odds and ends, so that we were all quite satisfied. On our return at 20:30 for dessert, virtually nothing was left of the cakes/pies that had been there, and that's the way it remained until everything was cleared away at 21:30. Breakfast was a lot more limited, especially for the health-conscious, with four hot dishes: hardboiled eggs, scrambled eggs, sausages and bacon. One of the two deciding factors that lead us to award this hotel four stars was the reception staff's immediate accommodation of the dietary needs of one of our party who inquired about other options in view of the severely limited breakfast choices upstairs in the executive lounge. The receptionist without hesitation said that this guest could have breakfast in the restaurant, where indeed there were many vegan options. Such unhesitating problem-solving is one of the things that makes a hotel stand out positively. Hats off to this staff member. The other deciding factor was the fitness room, which was reasonably well equipped - far, far more so than in Berlin (though I don't think Cologne has a pool). Good fitness facilities are something we're always very pleased to find in a hotel. All in all, we would definitely stay in this hotel again (which, by the way, is a two-minute walk from the main train station, with the Cathedral just on the opposite side and thus maybe a four-minute walk). Getting to the airport was also easy - four stops via local train from the main train station. Collapse
