Hopefully this will help ppl decide if this hotel is a good fit. The good. Right on the river. 15-20 min walk to the action and a lovely walk to get there along the river, so you can't get lost. Quiet location. Good views. New hotel and room is clean and modern. Comfortable beds. What I didn't like and why I wouldn't go back. Cigarette smoke smell in my room by morning, likely through a/c. Great that there was a gym! But crowded and busy, small and stinky. Staff in hotel were a mix of helpful to grumpy. I ate dinner at the hotel. Ordered the bass wrapped in banana leaf. It wasn't served that way at all. I got a piece of panfried bass and a scoop of white plain rice, and over cooked peas. I asked the waiter and he said the usual cook wasn't there and so I got this instead. No remedy was offered and I was hungry so just ate it. It was plain and edible. Walls were thin. I could hear neighbors talking. Not great for a light sleeper. Collapse

Ended up with a corner room overlooking the river. Really nice to have a beverage while enjoying the view. In the room everything was in good and working condition. The bed was very comfortable with plenty of pillows. Good size TV with plenty of High-Def. channels. Wi-Fi was free, fast enough with no issues. Plenty of towels in the bathroom/shower, no washcloths. Nice smelling soap and shampoo. The windows open a bit, but not much. The room did not get very cold, not sure if the A/C was on or not. I set it to it's lowest setting and it just did not get very cold. There were 2 windows which could be opened just a crack and created a draft for the cold night air to breeze through. Good service at the front desk at check in and check out. I did not use the restaurant or gym. Collapse

Hotel staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. We had a room on the 13th floor with a fabulous view of the river. The room was very spacious and the bed was massive. The maid had forgotten to put towels in but brought them to our room within two minutes. Just 5 min walk into the town. Use the NCP car park next door( discounted to €8 overnight)lots of restaurants in Limerick to choose from so didn't eat evening meal in hotel. Breakfast was adequate, would of liked it to be a little warmer. Collapse

Clayton Hotel, Steamboat Quay, Limerick When we arrived early we were greeted by a very friendly and helpful member of staff on the front desk and we were allocated a very nice room overlooking the river, we deposited our cases, parked our car and went on a walking tour of Limerick. Having enjoyed the sites of the city and stopped for a meal and a drink, we returned to the hotel to relax before turning down to a good night’s sleep. Alas our anticipated expectation of a good night’s rest was not to materialise for within an hour or so I was awoken with the strong smell of smoke, this alarmed me so I got up and investigated further, it was then that I discovered that the smoke was cigarette smoke and was coming from outside in the corridor By this time my wife was also awakened with the smell, on looking outside I could not see anyone in the corridor, we assumed that the smell would soon dissipate and that we would be able to resume our night sleep. Alas that expectation was not to be, the smoke smell not only persisted but it proceeded to get stronger, I then telephoned down and spoke to the night manager, who agreed to investigate, we then heard people speaking outside our room, but regrettably heard no more, we spent the night with our window slightly open (As far as it would allow) drinking coffee and tea. If anything would drive one to take up smoking perhaps this might do so. Very early the following morning went down to the front desk and spoke to the night manager, who without any hesitation agreed with our concern, but was unable to find who was smoking. We requested to see the general manager and were advised that he would be available later after breakfast. Discussed our dreadful night with the general manager of the hotel and left with the following words: The Irish Minister who has the responsibility for these matters needs to urgently bring in legislation to make it a serious offence to smoke anywhere within hotel premises with a €10k minimum fine for those who do and all hotels to install special security cameras and effective smoke alarms.
