This is a very difficult review for me to write as the issues I experienced will not be relevant for all travellers as my family had specific needs. I will explain best I can and hopefully it will be of some help. My family consisted of three adults and two children under the age of three and we stayed at the Citadines from Friday 21st April until Monday 24th April. I was taking part in the London Marathon and this hotel is in the perfect central location, near Buckingham Palace, Leicester and Trafalgar Square etc. Our room was a two bedroom apartment. The first issue we encountered was getting into the building. We had two pushchairs for the children and there were steps up to the door. We also had 3 suitcases and some other bags such as my children's Trunki's and a freezer bag with baby food in etc. It was very difficult to get into the lobby due to the steps and no staff came to assist or offered any assistance even though it was clear we were struggling. When we got to the check in desk a lady member of staff informed us we could not check in until 3pm. We had arrived at 1.15pm. I am studying hospitality and tourism at degree level, I am not naive and I understand policy and terms and conditions however it was the ladies attitude and customer service I didn't like. Every hotel I have stayed in has allowed an early check in if the room was available and ready. This lady made no effort to check with housekeeping, it was 3pm straight on the nose regardless of whether it was ready. I appreciate this is their policy and is clearly stated but we had two screaming babies after a 4 hour taxi journey and a lot of bags. We were taking up half the lobby. I told the lady I had to get to the excel arena (other side of London) to register for the marathon and I needed to feed and change my babies etc. and at no stage did she say anything along the lines of ' take a seat in the breakfast area and I will arrange a highchair for you and facilities to warm your baby food so you can feed them while you wait'. If I was managing this establishment, which is supposed to be luxury, that would be the sort of response I would expect from my staff. She just shrugged her shoulders and started at us. Eventually we left all our bags with them, jumped in a taxi to the excel arena and didn't return to check in until roughly 7pm. The room had a spiral staircase up to the bedrooms...it was very tight and not ideal. A member of our group struggles to walk and we were not warned about this when booking. The only toilet was downstairs and the bedrooms upstairs, again not ideal if someone wakes for the toilet in the middle of the night. I could not relax in the room as I was scared my baby and toddler would go up or down this staircase, there was no baby gate to block access. Other than that the accommodation was good. Beds comfortable and the fridge nice and large to store food and drink. When a porter came up with all of our bags one of them was missing and it took an hour to locate it. This bag had my baby bottles in so it was another period of stress. I would like to add that the porters were very helpful, friendly and respectful and couldn't do anymore to help us. They were the most friendly staff we came across in our stay here. There is a lot of noise from the outside at night but I suppose that is to be expected from central London. Breakfast is continental and satisfactory, however pricey if not included in your room rate. There were many guests taking part in the marathon and I believe the management could have started breakfast slightly earlier on marathon day to accommodate this major event, especially with it only being continental. When we checked out we called for assistance with our bags and it really felt like we were asking for the earth. Such hard work. Our taxi was not collecting us until 1.00pm and out check out was 11.00pm so we asked if we could store out bags, one of which needed to be refrigerated for our baby. Reception staff point blank refused to put the bag in the fridge even though they had done so at check in. I was starting to lose my patience at this point to be honest...there was a queue behind us and the lady did eventually call the kitchen and they put it in their fridge. We were not asking for the earth but everything felt like a struggle. This should not have been the case for this level of accommodation and I would not accept this if I was managing it. Again, I appreciate my needs were different to most. Business travellers would probably not worry about anything that I had issues with. This hotel is not for families with young children. The location is amazing but the level of service does not reflect the price paid to stay here. I would not return. Collapse
