This hotel is fairly basic, but breakfast was included and it's in the perfect location, close to shopping, restaurants and the city center. A friend recommended we stay here, and we had a great experience.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 4 nights and we were really impressed by the staff. Especially the man at the front desk (sorry I didn't catch his name). We arrived way too early to check in but had to catch a tour, so he offered a room for us to change. Later he noticed that Expedia actually booked us a twin beds room (when the confirmation stated double bed room) so while he fixed the problem and found us a different room, he gave us a room to shower and freshen up. He was really professional and friendly! The location is really great!! It was a 5-10 min walk to anywhere in the city, and a 30 sec walk to the bus station 7. (Due to laws and regulations tour buses can't go through the street right in front of the hotel). But it was still super convenient and close to everything. We walked around the city every night and loved it. Now as for the actual rooms... they are really small. We had 2 big check-in luggage and there was no room to store them without them covering most of the floor. There was enough closet space to organize one of the suitcases and the other one we had to leave on the floor in the corner. The desk is more like a shelf underneath the window and it's really narrow so my husband had to work in the sun room (the breakfast cafeteria area). Not a big deal for those don't work or need to use a laptop during their stay. And the bathroom... the first room we used to shower didn't have any of these problems, but we stayed at room 408 and it had this really weird bathroom smell. We had to make sure we closed the bathroom door when we slept or left the room or the whole room would stink. Also the sink drained the water really slowly so by the time I washed my face, it'd be almost overflowing. It was pretty bothersome but we didn't want to go through the trouble of having to pack everything and move rooms again. Plus, we were out most of the day going on tours. Unlike other reviews, we didn't have any problems with noise. I would definitely stay here again (just not in room 408). The small rooms and the smell that was probably a problem just in that one room don't beat the friendly staff and amazing location. Collapse

We booked into the Centerhotel Skjaldbreid as part of an "ultra affordable" package, so I wasn't expecting a huge amount; having said that, this is marketed as a four star hotel, and I did have certain expectations on the basis of that, which certainly weren't met. As an "ultra affordable" hotel, I'd give it a 4 out of 5 rating, as a four star hotel I'd give it a 2 out of 5 rating, so I've averaged out at a 3. First, the pros: + The hotel is in a fantastic location, within easy walking distance of almost everything. + The staff are very good, friendly and efficient. + The room was clean, ready when we arrived (even though we were a couple of hours before check-in time) and everything worked. + The wi-fi worked well (once we got it working). + Although this hotel has no restaurant of its own, you get a 10% discount in the restaurants of the other Centerhotels, including the Sky restaurant, which I recommend. Now the cons: - It's very noisy. Perhaps we had it worst because we had a room at the front on the second floor (it was so bad we almost asked to be moved). Noise from the street, noise from construction, all the time, even late at night / during the night. - The room is very small with minimal furniture. Only one side of the bed had a table, and there was hardly any space in the room to put luggage, clothes, etc. There was very little space in the bathroom to put your toothbrush, toiletries etc. - The breakfast is very basic: a little bit of fruit, a few types of cereal, a few types of bread with ham and cheese. It's nice that it's included in the price, but nothing to get excited about at all. - Everything's a bit tricky to get working. We had problems getting the wi-fi working on our phones, and came across a few other guests having the same issue. Every switch in the room works in a different (and non-obvious) way. - It's difficult to find: we stayed for four nights and even on the last day returning to collect our bags we almost walked past it - this is not an exaggeration! Would I recommend it? If you're on a budget and you can get a good price on this hotel, it's not a bad place to stay. But I'd certainly recommend looking around at other options in a similar location as well, and if you do choose the Centerhotel Skjaldbreid, set your expectations accordingly. One final point about tours. Due to city regulations, tour companies cannot pick you up at this hotel. They will usually tell you to wait at bus stop 7, which is two minutes walk from the hotel. That's all well and good, but if you want to be picked up at bus stop 7 you have to be there half an hour before the tour starts, which is pretty annoying. If you've booked with Reykjavik excursions, you can walk to the bus station in less than 15 minutes! If I were visiting again, I'd just book to be picked up at the bus station (this doesn't apply to all companies, as some as based further away). Collapse

Just got back from our stay here for 5 nights Good location right in the middle of Reykjavik and in the centre of restaurants and bars The Wi-Fi is crap I'm not sure why they advertise it. When you access the Wi-Fi you can't use your usual phone apps and internet it only let you go on safari and access their food menu and stuff so I didn't use the Wi-Fi at all.. following this I couldn't use my mobile data because the service was rubbish lol .. annoying The breakfast was not good.. standard bread, fruit, ham and cheese etc with orange juices teas and coffees it's ok I suppose but very very boring .. Just the same with no other alternative to pay for extra English breakfast etc. The room we stayed in was good room 305 the view was to the street so not good but good tv the channels were excellent for a chilled night in Shower very small but this is average I give it 4 stars for the room and staff but breakfast and wifi would make it a 3 We got a good price with a bundle package with British airways .. not sure id pay the prices of the hotel separately quite expensive Collapse

This was a very nice hotel. It is located in the main shopping area so it was close to everything; shops, restaurants, and many sites. It was also close to stop #7 which is where many day trips and excursions leave from. The beds are small but comfortable, we had a great view and the free breakfast was delicious. We arrived several hours before the check in time but the hotel accommodated us as quickly as possible. Overall a wonderful experience and I will certainly stay here again when I return to visit Iceland in the future. Collapse
