I made the reservation four months before our stay, not knowing it was some sort of culture day in Reykjavik. For almost $800 US for two nights, I expected upscale. To get in from the street you have to wrestle your bags up a set of stones, exterior steps, then another set of stairs, then get into the elevator and go up a floor to reception. If you have any sort of pascal challenge do not book here. Not handicapped friendly. They assigned us 309, an interior corner. The room was incredibly small. We were just finishing a two week motorcycle tour so we had lots of gear in four bags, two of them big rolling duffle bags. We could not fit our luggage in the room. The bottom of the bed was so close to the wall, I had to turn sideways to get in, and I'm a small person, and those rolling duffles certainly weren't getting to the other side of the bed where there was a desk and small closet. Saturday night on an event day I was not optimistic at getting the room changed. At first I was told the room was assigned and there was nothing I could do. I was offered a single superior but wouldn't work for two people. They offered to move the bed against a wall so we could get into the room. No. I persisted. I was told maybe they could move us to another of their hotels. No, because the streets were all blocked we'd already walked up from the waterfront with tons of luggage and in full motorcycle gear. I was livid. We made reservations four months ago and we get assigned the smallest room I've ever seen, a bathroom you could just about turn around in, facing the alley... for $800 US for two nights. We asked to speak to the manager. We were finally given a choice of two different rooms, neither large but one of them was twice the size and the bathroom was also twice the size. It was 409 facing inside but at least we could see rooftops instead of alley. They didn't offer help with our bags when we changed rooms. They do not have a restaurant but the breakfast area is bright and pleasant. I don't have high expectations for breakfast. Collapse

Nice location in Reykjavik, but had to park several blocks away. Everything was good and as described. Rooms adequate, beds comfortable, breakfast very nice. Our big complaint was the noise. We stayed here on our day of arrival and had very little sleep the night before so very tired. It was a Sunday night but the dance music started at about 11pm and continued until 4am. The window in my room would not close completely (due to wood swelling on the frame) so the music could be heard clearly. There were even hooks added to the frame, apparently to prevent the window from flying open--so it seemed that management was aware of the problem. Our kids in another room did not have this problem-their window closed. I pointed this out to the front desk the next morning. They appeared to be aware of the problem and said they would "look into it". This was a fine hotel and a good price for Iceland. I would recommend checking the windows when you check in and ask for a different room if the windows won't close. Collapse

This hotel has pros & cons and is really more 3 star. Most hotels cover a block or two, but this one is surprisingly just an ornate wooden door up some worn steps. Inside the entry way, you climb a marble steps to an elevator or to other floors. I did wonder how secure this was, though Reykjavik feels safe. The staff are great and will help you with various requests including printing vouchers for tours. The room was quite small and the beds had a youth hostel feel about them. Cable tv is mostly British and only a few channels. The half-round shower was a bit moldy and not big enough to properly reach my feet! On a gloomy morning, candles greeted us on the elegant stairway to breakfast which has generous portions and generous hours. The hotel feels historic, but the rooms and decor are mostly modern. Breakfast was nice and well organized, but I was disappointed that everything was so Ikea-like. This said, I would likely stay here again, because it is close to shops and eateries and tour pick-ups are only two minutes away and my overall stay was satisfactory. Collapse

We had a difficult time finding the hotel and parking nearby because it was the last day of Gay Pride week. The reception is on the 2nd floor. Checkin was easy. Our room 301 on the 3rd floor was right next to the stairwell which was very noisy. The carpet in the room needs to be replaced. There was a stale Oder in the room as well. The beds were comfortable enough but mattress has stains. The good thing about the hotel is that there is a wonderful breakfast room. Complimentary continental breakfast is included. The main shopping street is right below. Collapse
