I have stayed and spent time at the castle hotel numerous times. Sadler my husband and I had dinner last week and the food was dreadful and not it's usual standard My starter was returned and my my just about edible. Dessert was melted ice cream of the smallest portion you have ever seen The castle must maintain standards as was a lovely hotel but I will not eat there again Collapse

I recently stayed here with my partner for a 1 night getaway on a groupon voucher for £59 the stay was definitely worth this money but i wouldn't pay much more, the room was clean, tidy and very comfortable. The Bar and Hotel staff were lovely on our first night we walked around the site of llandovery following a route for sightseeing for visitors, we ate in a small cafe and had coffee this was lovely (printing office) on returning to the hotel we freshened up and headed to the bar we ordered 2 drinks. Our voucher came with a free glass of wine each and breakfast but neither of us drink wine the bar staff offered the wine and when we explained we did not drink wine, they were more than accommodating replacing this with our current ordered drinks, we ordered started from the nibble menu holloumi for my partner and parmesan sloth egg for myself, both were delicious then it came to mains my partner ordered a burger and i the lasagne on arrival the burger looked and smelt amazing to which my partner confirmed. My lasagne was luke warm on the outer edge so i tested the middle it was still frozen !!, in a packed bar i did not want to embarrass the staff or make a scene so i walked around to reception and told the waiter he was extremely obliging replacing my meal immediately the new lasagne was so so hot and the pasta was now firm where over cooked under the pasta i could not eat was a delicious meaty lasagne. We went to the bar to pay the tab and they had removed the lasagne we paid our bill and went to bed. Breakfast in the am was lovely a good range of options we were served by a lovely italian waiter who was very accommodating but seemed to be getting bossed about a bit by an older lady/manager i ordered boiled eggs and soldiers and my partner full english on arrival he said his was lovely but warm not hot he cracked the eggs for me but were full of water and not quite cooked we did not complain as the lady on the table next to us was also unhappy her fish breakfast was cold in the centre( i see a theme emerging ) and was already complaining the hotel and staff are lovely but seems the chef needs some help on checking out we were advised we had a bill to pay of 61.80 when i questioned this it was then changed to 2.80 from the bar neither my self or partner did not under stand as we paid the bill prior to leaving the bar we paid the 2.80 and left not an encouraging visit but the hotel and location is perfect Collapse

Popped in here for lunch today. Was served by a lovely European chap, great service; however whilst I was mid conversation with him, an older lady, who I assume was the manager decided to butt in and ask the chap about a problem she was having with the till. Not a great start. I ate from the specials board (see picture), my wife ate from the main menu. I had Plaice and my wife had 'pie of the day', which our friendly waiter explained, was Beef. The Plaice was well cooked, but was served dripping g in butter, so much so that it was the dominate flavour of the dish. I moved the food to other side of the plate and was able to eat the meal, was actually very nice. The Plaice was served on Thai crushed potato, I can only assume this was cooked at the beginning of the day, had dried out by 14:00 when we ate, and the butter was to liven it up. My wife's pie on the other hand was not cooked, the pastry tasted of flour and was inedible. See picture. The gravy was also mainly oil and not very nice to taste. My wife managed to eat the beef inside the pie and the chips. The beef was well cooked and in a tasty gravy. Another waiter came to take our plates and I explained the situation, he agreed to remove the pie from the bill. My wife noticed the rude lady from the bar, go into the kitchen following the waiter who agreed to remove my wife's meal from the bill. I went to the bar to pay, and the waiter came back and said he would remove the drinks from the bill. I'm not sure why, as the drinks were fine. I didn't want to argue and accepted the new gesture. The Castle Hotel is a lovely old building and full of character, the menu is extensive and the specials all looked very good. I can only think rude lady was having a bad day. Collapse

We stayed at The Castle for a friends wedding that took place there recently. Much bigger on the inside than it looks, lovely large room, bed comfortable. Staff very helpful. Breakfast was excellent, the rarebit especially went down a treat. It is important to check if there is an event going on when you stay, it is loud though obviously in our case it was an event we attended!! Collapse

We stayed here one night and booked for dinner on the basis of the Taste of Wales. On arrival we discovered there was a charity concert going on, we were not informed in advance. It was well attended and fairly noisy although it was scheduled to finish at 23:00 and in fairness did not go on. We stayed in Room 9 which certainly has heritage quirkiness. The floor is far from level and every movement results in loud creaking as does anyone passing on the corridor outside. There was considerable noise from outside particularly machinery noises from presumably the kitchens. The ensuite would be described as bijou by an estate agent. It had a most unusual folding door as a non folding one would not open. The shower over the bath with poorly positioned curtain was very difficult to get anything other than boiling or freezing water. The hotel has WiFi however the network could not be seen from the room. So to dinner. Fish and chips were ordered and duly arrived. Unfortunately the fish had not had the benefit of getting cooked and was still frozen and had to go back. The replacement with minimal apology some time later after other mains had been consumed was now overcooked. There was no offer of any discount or other recognition. Breakfast found similarly poorly cooked sausages although other elements of breakfast were fine. Was it value for money - No. Will I be back, only if I can't find an alternative. One of the best tests of Service Quality is how problems are dealt with and managed and in this respect they score a clear fail. Collapse
