Although Jackie and I had travelled through the town on a number of occasions, we had never stopped there. When an "irresistable offer" came up on Groupon we jumped at the opportunity. The Hotel, once an old coaching inn, lies in the centre of the market town of Llandovery in the Towy valley at the edge of the Brecon Beacons. Sadly the hotel car park was full when we arrived, so we paid for a couple of hours at the town car park to the rear of the Hotel. After checking-in the receptionist took us to our room. Before she left she told us the Hotel's Wifi code but we explained that the whole point of "taking a break" was to get away from mobile phones, tablets and the internet! Our room was a large and clean, and we liked the reading area with a double sofa. Modern furniture complimented the old wooden beams and the quaint Victorian frosted-glass panelled bathroom door. After we had unpacked we went off to explore. The local Bridge Club had taken over one of the front rooms and in another room (over-flowing into the lounge) a funeral gathering was having tea! The Hotel seemed to be the hub of the town (and this was why the car park was full). Sadly most of the shops around town were closed because it was Wednesday afternoon! As a child I remember early closing on Wednesdays but I hadn't expected it to happen nowadays. We ate dinner at 19.00 and were very impressed by the fare on offer. We were even more impressed with the immaculate presentation as well as the taste of those dishes that we ordered. As usual, we retired to the bar for "a nightcap" and found it to be full of locals ...not hotel guests. Another indication that the hotel was the heart of the town. While I sipped my Craggenmore Jackie thought that she could hear singing. We took our drinks with us as we went off to investigate. In a "ballroom" to the rear of the hotel we found that a local male choir were rehearsing. Very entertaining! We had a reasonable night. Our mattress was far too soft and lumpy for our slim frames but "larger" guests might not have noticed! When we went down for breakfast I explained to the receptionist about the mattress and was assured that had they known earlier then we could have been switched to another room. Breakfast was served by a happy smiling waitress. Self service cereals, fresh fruit salad and yoghurts. Hot food orders individually taken and waitress served. My "full Welsh" hit the mark (very tasty bacon!) and Jackie was pleased with her un-dyed smoked haddock and two poached eggs. Despite having to check for a parking space when we first arrived (I found one after the Bridge Club had left) our stay at the Castle Hotel was a memorable one. I noted that as a guest I could fly-fish the local river (with or without a ghillie) and that a permit could be purchased from reception. April, when the trout season starts, can't come quick enough and then we can enjoy another stay at this friendly hotel. Collapse
A little gem of a place.

Stayed here on a groupon deal with friends. Central located hotel in a lovely town with lovely shops, chemist, variety of pubs and restaurants all close together. The hotel is very old with lots of history behind it. Quirky, clean, comfortable and extremely welcoming. Rickety old stairs to the bedroons and creaky floorboards all add to its authenticity. If you are not very mobile ask for a room on the 1st floor as there is no lift. Top notch staff from all ares, very pleasant and welcomibg a credit to the hotel. We had a meal on friday evening which was beautifully presented , hot and served at the table by the lovely staff - £20 for 2 courses although we only had the main meal as we wanted to find somewhere that showed the rugby. Saturday Wales v England rugby was on and if I could make a suggestion to the management is to put up a big screen for the residents to watch the rugby in the function room. We went to the local rugby club to watch it and had a good welcome but I'm sure there were many others who went out in search of a venue, 1couple asked us for recommendations. I'm sure it would be a well turned out occasion. Also when we were there last year we were lucky enough to be there for the Soul night and it was amazing!! Unfortunately we missed it this year,, so wonder if this could be advertised in advance so we could book for that weekend. Breakfast and our room very good, extremely comfortable, clean and really big. We had room 4 (same as last year). We will definitely be returning to Llandovery for a break and if the price is right, staying at the Castle Hotel. This hotel comes highly recommended. Collapse

We walked into a very welcoming ' olde worlde ' lounge where we sat in front of a warming fire for a complimentary glass of wine ( Groupon ) Very pleasant staff, nice warm room, big bed, what's not to like ? Highlights were smoked haddock for breakfast and a choir practice one evening which we loved ! Very creaky floors, but it is an old building after all. Collapse
