On arrival I was attended to by a very personable young man who showed me to my bedroom. Disappointingly this was not in the main body of the hotel but at the end of a narrow corridor at the rear of the building. This was a bit unwelcoming but not really a major problem as I was on a fleeting visit and only staying for one short night. The squeaking floorboards were an annoyance but forgivable considering the age of the building. However, what was far less forgivable was the lack of privacy as there was virtually no sound proofing between my room and the adjacent one which, under different circumstances, could have been very embarrassing for the occupants of both rooms! I was awoken in the early hours of the morning by the noisy plumbing when the occupant of the adjoining room used their en suite bathroom! The gurgling emanating from the plughole of the bath in my bathroom made sleeping difficult to say the least, and indicated that there is something seriously awry with the system. At breakfast time it was quite evident that the hotel was being manned by a skeleton staff, all seeming to share the dining room waiting, bar cleaning and reception desk duties! The general service in the dining room left a lot to be desired and in fact, after sitting at my table for a considerable time, I had to go looking for staff in the kitchen - as had other guests before me. On a positive note, my room, and the hotel generally, was clean. All told, a memorable stay but sadly for all the wrong reasons. Collapse

We stayed for 2 nights in October as a quick break away on a Groupon deal and to be honest, our expectations were that it would be average at best considering what we paid!! How wrong we were! From the minute we arrived we were made to feel welcome and looked after. Fires were blazing in open fireplaces, it was warm and cosy, and the receptionist greeted us in a sincere and friendly manner. Low ceilings, beams, cosy sofas and armchairs – our spirits lifted after our long journey from Suffolk via a visit to Hereford. Our room blew us away (Room 6). Extremely spacious, huge very comfy super king bed with lovely soft pillows and duvet and the usual bedroom facilities. The bathroom was huge, beautifully tiled and spotlessly clean. We couldn’t believe it for the price we paid! (£89 for 2 nights B&B). We headed down for dinner and drinks after unpacking, and again, the service was impeccable, with polite helpful and super-efficient staff. The menu choice was good with an additional specials board. We had taken up an offer of dinner for £20 per head, giving us an allowance of £25 to spend on food – and we struggled to spend that! The food was quite simply, amazing. Perfect portion sizes for us, beautifully presented and really, really tasty. After dinner, we retired to the cosy lounge and sat on a big comfy sofa in front of the fire to finish our drinks. Perfect! Breakfast the next day was excellent. A really good choice of items from the buffet, with all the cereals, a good selection of pastries and a large bowl of fresh fruit salad, plus little glasses of yoghurt with compote and granola. There was a good choice of cooked breakfast to choose from a menu – the Full Welsh was lovely. Originally, we had planned to eat somewhere else on our second evening, having booked cinema tickets for a little cinema in Builth Wells. But when we returned back to the Castle after a damp and chilly day sightseeing, the atmosphere hit us straight away, we could smell the aromas of dinner being cooked, the fires were blazing, and we both decided to forgo the cinema even though we had paid for tickets. We opted for a nice soak in the tub, and dinner in the restaurant, which again was perfect. We were also serenaded in the bar by a Welsh Male Voice Choir – which was quite the experience, and got chatting to some other guests, joining them for drinks around the log fire. We agreed it was again, a perfect relaxing evening. So, our stay was everything we could have wished for and much, much more. A beautiful, characterful, slightly quirky but very charming hotel, with friendly but professional staff, excellent food, lovely rooms. A perfect place to stay to get away from the world and recharge the batteries! The only negative I could think to mention is that the hotel is situated on the main A40 road, and traffic noise does disturb you when the morning rush hour starts. However, I’m sure the hotel existed before traffic became a problem, so there is nothing that the hotel could do about this – so, if this would be a problem if choosing to stay as a guest – take some ear-plugs! We would not hesitate to book another stay at the Castle – especially in Autumn/Winter for the ambience and cosiness. Collapse

My wife and I were impressed by the friendly staff, quality of the room, and large comfortable bed (room 6), and good service. Excellent breakfasts with good choices. The comprehensive menu was cheerfully adjusted to suit my vegetarian taste and arrived hot and well cooked. Unexpected bonuses were the history and museum rooms showing local life in the earlier role of the hotel including links to Lord Nelson. For us it provided a good base to explore the Brecon Beacons.
