I spent two nights at Carlton Hotel, an Autograph Collection Hotel, in New York City this week. If I was not a 30+ year veteran of the hotel industry, I would vow never to stay in any Autograph Collection Hotel again; however, knowing that Marriott allows independent hotels to buy their sales, reservations and loyalty systems in the Autograph Collection, means I can only boycott Carlton Hotel going forward. First, the gym and sole food and beverage outlet were closed for repairs. I had no advance knowledge of either. Second, the lighting in the hallways, guest rooms and public areas was practically funereal. Third, the in-room terry was hard and scratchy, and the so-called bath towels were hardly large enough to wrap around my 34” waist. In addition, the two par of terry in the room (and one robe) felt really chintzy. Fourth, the bathroom itself was barely large enough to turn around. The bathroom mirror jutted about 4 inches out from the wall above a pedestal sink that may have had 16” diameter, meaning, about 25% of the sink was virtually inaccessible when bending to wash my face or brush my teeth. Furthermore, the depth of the room was such that the water closet interfered with the ability to stand directly in front of the sink. Fifth, bathroom amenities were not refreshed, such that, in my second shower, the shower gel and shampoo were either fully used or virtually so. Sixth, the room in which I was staying (#218) was in a small hallway off the main corridor; initially, I thought this would assure quiet. However, my room was adjacent to a housekeeping closet, where staff seemed to accumulate and talk at their normal speaking voice volume during all hours of the day. The Carlton is an older building, so that the sound attenuation between hallway and guestroom is quite deficient to ordinary standards. Lastly, upon checkout, the clerk not only did not ask if I had a good stay, nor ask me to return soon, nor to make nice comments on Trip Advisor. In fact, the only thing she said to me was, quoting, “Do you want a paper copy of your receipt?” Sorry, Marriott, but this experience does not suggest an upper upscale experience. Carlton, I won’t be back. Collapse

So I have stayed here over a dozen times as I live in California and my company is based down the street. I used to love this hotel and would take my family here, we have many great memories. The problem is it was recently bought and has new ownership. Everything and I mean everything has gotten worse. There is no life in the employees, they changed the toiletries from molton brown to some horrible generic toiletries. They shuttered the restaurant and conference rooms to make room for retail shops ($$ move for owners, bad move for guests), no gym, construction zone, there used to be a signature scent (small thing but it was part of the charm) and now its gone, no business room, rooms are in decay, and I could go on. Marriott needs to either fire this hotel from their collection or demand it get back up to the quality its members deserve. This will be my last stay at the Carlton, and it upsets me because it used to be one of my favorite hotels. Note to Marriott members, the Edition and Lexington are good alternative options nearby. We had a suite for our family of 5. Excellent cleanliness. Staff friendly. Some part of the hotel a little tired and there was some renovation work going on when we stayed over New Year to the gym. The front desk staff were excellent. The concierge was a little disappointing as she was reluctant in engaging and not very helpful, unlike the rest of the staff. I like to combine my own research with local knowledge. Perhaps an "off day" but let the overall feel/experience down. Would recommend. Collapse

We stayed at the Carlton from Dec 26- Dec 30. We had a suite on the 7th floor and it was very spacious and modern. I was very surprised by how large the rooms actually were. Guest Services and staff were great. Our hotel head of security, Joseph, was extremely helpful. The Hotel is undergoing some renovations or else they certainly would have been given 5 stars. I can't wait to see what the new and improved Carlton will be like! We were three grown women traveling with two teenage girls and never at any time did we not feel safe. Location was great. Will definitely be staying here again! Collapse

I stayed at the Carlton in mid December and it just seems to get worse and worse. This may well be due to new management of the hotel. The rooms are old and tired, there are no hotel amenities to speak of and the service was horrible. There was only one person checking people in as the second employee was on break. You would have thought a hotel this big would have a back up person. To make it worse both the person at the front desk and the manager were incredibly rude. When I raised a concern he told me to stop shouting even though I didnt raise my voice. A lady behind me later came out to me and said "I have no clue what he meant and I never heard you raise your voice and I was right behind you." The hotel manager wouldnt even give me his name. What hotel manager wont tell a guest his name? I suspect that this hotel will be changing and wont be an Autograph/ Marriott property for long. In the mean time, stay away!! Collapse
