My wife and I have Just returned from the thanksgiving weekend break. We Knew nothing of the renovations, the bar being shut or the restaurant closed. When we queried this with the hotel reception the reponse a very blunt "well it's on our web site". The rooms were very tired and in definite need of updating. The smell outside the hotel is terrible which eminates from the manhole directly adjacent to the entrance doors. The coffee machine was not working most of the time. The consierge was more Interested in his mobile phone than us, and using the hotel computer for his own use. He didn,t resalise I could see what he was looking at in the reflection behind him. The room we stayed in was noises from the traffic outside although the bed was comfortable. Very disappointing and to cap it all I now have £25 taken from my credit card by the hotel even though the reception staff confirmed there were no additional charges applicable. I will be taking this up with my credit card provider as I feel this is a deliberate attempt to extort money's from me. Perhaps they think it's not worth the effort and I will right the money off. No chance. The only thing going for this hotel is the location. This aside newyork is fantastic although very expensive. The tipping system is rediculous at average of 20%. The average beer is 11 dollars plus an average 20% tip makes it rediculous. The food is the same with burgers around 25 dollars plus the 20% tip again. Collapse
Long weekend break.

We were really reluctant about staying at the hotel due to the renovations but went ahead anyway. Check in was easy and we got upgraded to a Queen room from a standard. The room was a little dated with flakey paint on the walls and the furniture was quite worn but it was clean, plus the bed was comfortable. Only really problem with the room was the lighting. Very dim lamp in the corner and no ceiling lighting, also the bathroom was poorly lit. The renovations are well hidden so didn't really impact our stay. We were told at checking in that there would be a list in our room for local restaurants offering a discount to people staying at the Carlton as the hotel restaurant was shut. There was no list and when we asked at the reception the next morning we were told there wasn't a list. Complimentary coffee machine in the foyer but this was not working for most of our stay. Overall it was an ok stay. Can definitely see why the hotel is getting renovated as it looking worn around the edges. The hotel is in a perfect location for the subway, visiting the local attractions and shopping. Collapse

My husband and I stayed two nights over the post Thanksgiving holiday. Over powering reek of urine outside the hotel. No to go coffee cups, broken furniture, non working mini bar fridge, tears in bathmat. Lots of employees standing around, but not doing anything. I've stayed here a couple of times in the last 2 years and this was the worst experience. Collapse

We have stayed in a number of hotels in New York but this one beats them all so far. Location is brilliant - very central but quiet (for New York that is). The lobby and reception are very welcoming. All staff were happy, smiling, very helpful, attentive and chatty. Check in was quick and easy. We had a superior double room with queen size bed. It was a really nice room, decent size, bath and shower were great. No tea and coffee making facilities in the room But complimentary tea and coffee downstairs in the lobby whilst restaurant is being refurbished. We took our own travel kettle which was useful. Took me a while to find the hairdryer (in a bag in a glass cupboard above the toilet) but it was a good one. Complimentary toiletries really nice and options of drinks, snacks and other items to purchase in your room. Good range of choices. Daily maid service - clean towels sheets etc every day. Everywhere very clean. We Read reviews about hotel being "tired" but saw nothing that would shout "in need of upgrade". We loved the while experience and will hope to return one day. Definitely recommend. Thank you to all staff who made our stay so welcoming. Best place we have stayed I. NYC . Collapse

We stayed for 5 nights in June. The hotel is very conveniently located, right in the center of Manhatten island, so if you like to discover things on Foot, this is ideal. Me and my wife enjoy walking so didn't catch a subway or taxi to see any of Manhatten, and over the course of the trip were able to do, the southern tip (Battery Park), Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park - all from here. Granted this is not for everyone, but I think it's the best way to see NY anyway. The hotels rooms aren't the largest, but you are in NY so no surprise there. The rooms have a quaint decor which is quite chic. They had a set price Taxi service to JFK for $75 - this was a nice big SUV, rather than the yellow cab - and took roughly an Hour. Collapse
