We went to Venice for our wedding anniversary and had a lovely time. The hotel was The Carlton on the Grand Canal which had a fantastic location within walking distance to the local landmarks. The breakfast in the morning was excellent and had a good choice. The only down point was that we could not open our window because of outside shutters to get fresh air. We travelled from Treviso airport by the Ryanair bus which was a very good service and only cost 10 Euros each way. I would certainly go back in the spring. Collapse

Great location as previous posters have said decor tired and we had ants in our room which when reported to reception were told it was because it was spring! Would we go again? Probably not. Breakfast room on small side an overflow room seemed to be an afterthought as hardly saw waiting staff. Breakfast plentiful and varied including cake!! Venice beautiful but very very busy Collapse

We booked here based on recommendation of other friends who had stayed here. It is a quaint hotel on the canal across from the train station and near bus station. If you are looking for a large room, this is probably not the place. Our room was very small but elegantly appointed in 1700 period French. Our friends room was much smaller and tight but still nice. The bathroom was nicely done. The staff was very helpful in helping us get to the airport for a very early flight. They conveniently have a water taxi our the front door. They made up a sack breakfast for us to take since breakfast isn't served until 7 AM. I have to say we didn't really enjoy the standard breakfast. We found the staff to be very helpful and accommodating. If you want to sleep, suggest you get a room away from the canal side. There is something about enjoying it on the first stay, however. We have just spent a long weekend over Easter at the Carlton and was very impressed with it. The staff were helpful and the hotel was clean and smart, typical Venetian in its decor, but we found that charming . The inclusive breakfast was typically continental, but all was fresh and plentiful. The hotel is a 40 minute walk from Piazza San Marco, but the great thing about the hotel is that it it directly facing the train station and the water bus stop from where you can get the no.1 or no.2 water bus directly to the Rialto Bridge, or the Piazza. We got a two day pass which was worth it as we also used it to go to Murano. Collapse
Nice hotel, Great location, friendly helpful staff. We enjoyed our stay there.

This hotel is in a perfect location. It is located on the grand canal directly across from the train station. In front of the train station are the entrances to all of the Vaporetto public water boats (different routes have different entrances). Because of this location, it is easy to get to everywhere in Venice. The hotel has maps of Venice so be sure to get one. Front desk staff can explain how to get places (walking or by water boat). The 1st floor is nicely decorated. There is an area near the lobby with various chairs and couches to rest or wait for someone. The hotel has a nice breakfast buffet with plenty of tables. There are many hot and cold breakfast items along with breads, meats, cheeses, coffee, tea and juices. Everything we ate tasted good. The hotel also has a restaurant for lunch and dinner. There is another restaurant on the rooftop but it was closed and is only open for the warmer part of the year. We were disappointed we couldn't get the rooftop view or some photos from up there. We had a garden room. It was large, quiet and looked just like their photo. Our room had a safe, closet to hang clothes, 2 narrow twin beds pushed together, a desk with a chair, a small round table with 2 arm chairs, 2 nightstands, but no dresser. The carpeting was a bit worn out or very faded in spots from the sun. The bathroom tub had a hand held shower unit. We could see into a few other garden rooms and some were smaller with different furniture. In the middle of all the garden rooms (about 6 to 8 rooms) is the nice garden area. The garden area is outdoors with flowers, tables and chairs. I don't know what the regular rooms on upper floors are like as we didn't see them. There are a few street/sidewalk vendors between the hotel and the nearby bridge. I noticed that these few vendors were the least expensive all around Venice (they all sell pretty much the same stuff). The vendors, stores and restaurants across the other side of the bridge were more expensive so don't eat or shop near the train station. If you walked from the train station past the bridge and continued on the street, this street is one of the main ones with lots of shops. I also noticed that there are Gondolas in front of the hotel at various times. I highly recommend that you buy the all day Vaporetto water boat pass. Skip the lines and buy the pass at the hotel. The hotel sells the passes for the same price you pay at the stations. You can buy all day passes for 1, 2, 3, 4 days, etc. Each day is good for 24 hours. Passes can take you to other islands too. The time on the pass doesn't start until the first time you use it. The front desk staff is knowledgeable as to which water line to take to different locations, including other islands. This hotel is also used by some tour groups. Those groups stay 1 or 2 nights so you may see a group or two at the hotel on some days. We found a good restaurant nearby. Go out the front door and turn left. When you get to the next bridge, walk down the left side of that canal. Walk to the next bridge on the right. At the base of that bridge is Antica Osteria Leone Alato. There are various stores and restaurants along the way. We ate in a couple but really liked the Leone Alato the best. Good selection, reasonably priced and tasted great. Please note that if you travel on your own, and drag your own suitcases, you will have MANY steps and possibly many bridges to cross along the way from the train station or the bus station. We arrived at the bus station and walked to the hotel. We opted to pay the money for a taxi to get to the airport when we left. Collapse
