We were looking for a night away around my birthday not too far and not too expensive. After looking around online we decided on this hotel and I'm glad we did. This was our first visit. The hotel itself on the outside is beautiful with lots of character and a pretty garden area. There is also a patio and kids play area out the back. On arrival we were checked in quickly at 15:30. We did have to wait a little while for our room to be ready but it wasn't too long and we weren't in any hurry so we bought a drink and relaxed. Drink prices are very reasonable. First impressions of the room were great. It was modern and totally spotless. We were in room 15 with a four poster and a jacuzzi bath (which I never wanted to get out of). Tea and coffee in room as well as little touches like travel soap, shampoo, conditioner etc. Plenty of towels. We had a sofa in the room and a couple of chairs. There was a big modern flat screen T.V with HDMI ports which we used to play movies from my laptop. Bed was very comfy, we slept great. The water heating system is awesome. At home we can't run a full bath as the hot water turns cold quickly but it seemed we had an endless supply. I have seen people mention about the soundproofing in the rooms. It could be better but it was ok. Upon further inspection, a couple of scrapes on skirting board and bed need touching up, but I really am nitpicking. We went out for dinner so couldn't comment on the evening food. Breakfast was tasty though with a selection of cooked breakfast, cereal, toast, juices, coffee etc. When we went through we didn't know if we were to help ourselves or if someone served us. We asked anyway but this could have been displayed somewhere for reassurance. All the team at the hotel are great, all approachable and happy to help however like previous comments, a few extra pairs of hands would do wonders. Collapse

I remember visiting the Carlton manor just after it had been refurbished and thinking 'wow' my how things have changed, this was supposed to be 'the venue' for weddings, meetings and services, where do I start, got there at 1.45 and told food finished at two but we could order bar meals, ok, menu is quite heavy for lunch, no sandwiches in site? But ok to each his own I guess. Only two other tables in the place, sadly the place is needing some TLC, the grass outside is dead, the carpets inside which are cream in colour are dirty the whole place felt run down, sad because I was hoping it was going to be good? Never mind, one more off my list, don't bother Collapse
Not exceptional but ok, just.

Waited about 5 minutes for member of staff to check us in. In the queue there was local family who had come for the carvery. They said that there was always a wait as there wasn't enough staff to cover all areas and they had to double up working in the dining room and covering the desk. There was free wifi. Stayed 3 nights in room 7 on ground floor. Room was big with 4 poster bed and jacuzzi bath. Everything clean. If I had a gripe it was we had to lay/sit on the bed all the time. The room was begging for a couple of easy chairs and really surprised not in room. Could also have done with some hooks in bathroom instead of the empty screw holes. The grounds outside the bedroom windows needed some TLC and litter picking. The front of the hotel just needed TLC. Looks like the owners don't care. It wouldn't cost much to weed and it certainly needed it. First impressions do count. The hotel itself was ok inside. The decor was fine with bar area and additional seating areas a restaurant as well as another room for residents having dinner. Didn't see upstairs and also did not see any lift. Didn't eat dinner at hotel. We were put off by other guests who said it wasn't very nice so can't comment further. We were told their carvery was nice but it wasn't available the 2 nights we had no plans. We had breakfast for the 3 days. It's the usual serve yourself with cereal, fruit juice and toast. Fresh fruit and natural yogurt available to order. 1st day was fine. We both had poached eggs on brown toast. 2nd and 3rd day the whole atmosphere seemed to have changed. Fruit juices were not replenished when jugs were empty. Had to scrounge milk off other tables. The 3rd morning not even asked whether wanted white or brown bread with the poached eggs. It appeared as if serving breakfast was a necessary evil that the sooner it was over the better. Sounds like I'm picking holes but have stayed in much better....and worse. It certainly wasn't our attitude or that of the other guests and to be honest the member of staff always was cheerful I just felt uncomfortable. Not sure I would stay again. Collapse
