Nice location, friendly staff, rooms a little dated

Stayed here after a conference and over 4th of July weekend. I got a free upgrade to a bigger room, which was nice. The room, and indeed the whole hotel, was showing it's age and could benefit from a little renovation. The carpets especially seemed worn and in need of replacement. All-in-all though, I had a pleasant stay. The staff was friendly, housekeeping did a good job, the room was plenty big, and everything was clean and in working order. The location was also great, you're near 3 metro stations and pretty close to the White House and plenty of restaurants. I'll make a comparison to the hotel that I stayed in for a work conference for a few days before I moved to the Capital Hilton (because it was $50 cheaper per night), the Liaison Capitol Hill. I have to say the Liaison was definitely a nicer place. The room in the Hilton was a little more worn down, the beds weren't as comfy, and the tv was in a really awkward viewing position. There is a reason the Liaison is a little more expensive. Don't get me wrong, the Hilton served its purpose and I would stay there again, but the Liaison was just an all-around nicer place to stay. This hotel is very nicely located at a stone's throw from the White House. The room I was staying in (1144) was a large L-shaped room and had a very clean bathroom. However, there were no towels in the bathroom upon arrival. When I called reception to have towels brought up to the room, the receptionist sounded like she didn't understand what the issue was and like I was asking for a miracle. The large room also had the TV stand with TV on the other side of the room making for difficult viewing, even with glasses. Additionally the USB charging ports in the telephone seemed like a great idea for people having forgotten their adapters, if they had worked of course. The room did contain all the necessary amenities such as a good iron which is extremely hard to find in hotels these days. Additionally, I loved the products which were on offer in the bathroom by Peter Thomas Roth, especially his Mega-Rich Body Cleanser. I scored this hotel a very good as the TripAdvisor scoring scale goes straight from average to very good and I honestly thought it was better than average. However, as much as I appreciated the receptionist's kindness, I believe Hilton customers shouldn't be addressed with "bro" though. Overall a good stay, but not my usual Hilton experience. Collapse

Spent three nights in the Capital Hilton during a busy time (the lawmakers where in town). This is a rather large, old property. the staff was very helpful and courteous. The always are long and a bit disjointed. Just feel the place can use some TLC as some of the appointments were dinged up and the doors needed a lilt extra help to close. the layout of my room didn't flow very well. all that said, the room was clean and the bed was comfortable. there were large groups staying at the hotel using the conference centres - so the lobby would get rather crowded with folks taking breaks. there were also large groups of youth (although the were well behaved) using the hotel. I would stay here again without worry. Collapse
Close to White House, farther from other sites

When we first arrived to try to check in, after driving 8 hours, the hotel was surrounded by Secret Service. When we called the hotel front desk, we were told that the hotel had a "distinguished guest and that the Secret Service had taken the hotel over." We would not be able to check in for at least another 15 minutes. Well, 45 minutes we were finally able to do so. There was not parking nearby, so we had to drive around and around until we had clearance to enter. Parking is extremely expensive on a daily basis, however, this is not unique to this location. The parking valets were very friendly and helpful. The front desk was so preoccupied with the celebrity status that they did not process our room cards correctly and did not include the breakfast buffet that was included in the room rate we had paid for, so after looking like idiots the following morning, we had to have our cards reprocessed to do so. The room was ok, sheets on the beds had holes in them...the entire week. Had booked a junior suite, but didn't realize that it did not have a microwave nor refrigerator, which was an inconvenience. The location is literally down the street from the White House, but expect to walk alot to any other locations. Probably a 20 -25 minute to the closest Smithsonian Museum. We used Uber mostly to get around. Probably would not choose this location again. Collapse
