Well what can I say. We've just come back from a 10 day stay at this so called 4* hotel. No way is this a 4*. 2* is being generous. Our room was on the first floor. It was dark and dingy. There was no room to swing a cat. Holes in the walls, tiling in the bathroom appalling. Gaps everywhere. Balcony was so small that if you wanted to seat 3 (as there was 3 of us on this holiday) you couldn't. On arrival there was no pleasantries like "welcome to our hotel, hope you enjoy you stay", the staff are miserable and that's not just the reception it included the bar staff, the chefs serving in the dining room and the waitress/waiter. The only one person that was pleasant was the housekeeper. At least you got a good morning and a smile out of her. At least she tried her best to keep the room clean and the beds were made every day. The food was mediocre. The drinks machine wasn't always dispensing properly even after telling them you just got a shrug and we'll fix it but that never happened. I can't see why they advertise it as fully inclusive when you had to pay for fruit salad and ice cream. They have a pizzeria restaurant too and this was chargeable. I expected more fruit as an option but all you got at breakfast was some dried up orange slices and watermelon in the evening. The other dessert choices was always a cake and some kind of pie. When I've stayed at all inclusives before, you help yourself to what you want I've never got served by the cooks who were stingy with their servings that more often than not you had to ask them to put more on your plate. The choice of drinks was limited to 5 cheap spirits, soft drink and cheap beer. They even charged you for the water. The pool was disgusting. Dirty and full of salt water. Entertainment was just a joke. There was nothing for the kids. 4 days out of the 7 they had some so-called keyboard player/singer, the over 60's would come off the streets to meet and have a tea dance. You felt as if they weren't bothered about what the visitors wanted it was all about the locals. I looked at the certificates in reception which was awarded to them back in 2007. 10 years ago! Doesn't anyway review the place before they advertise them on their website? On our departure at 5:30am we went down to reception and it was all dark. Only to find the night receptionist asleep on the sofa. Shoes off fully clothed. He took our keys and yet again there was no thank you for staying with us. He just grunted checked we didn't owe anything then went back to the sofa to sleep. 10 days of misery and we've spent our hard earned money. Feels like it was a waste. Malta is lovely but you definitely do not want to stay at the Canifor Collapse
Poor standards and very grubby.

We had an apartment, you are told this may be in a different building known as Canifor Court our apartment was not even in this building it was a single apartment between a bar and a travel agent further down the street. It was poor standard by any means the toilet and shower were very grubby and the shower was full of mould, it had a broken and decayed window due to water damage from the shower and I begin to say how awful the fridge was.We did get clean towels every day but no cleaning or linen change for the whole 10 days. We had to pay extra on arrival to use the air-con in the room which was necessary as it was 38+ degrees every day. The restaurant was very grubby and dated, not a bad thing to be dated if clean, but this was just awful, chairs are not clean the sides are crusted with drips and bits of food, dishes are collected into dirty mouldy tubs then taken to the kitchen for cleaning not a good site. The serving area was grubby and just looked shabby, i had to stop looking around as I kept seeing other things that just should not happen in food areas. I got the impression no one cared or took any pride in the place it needs closing and deep cleaning and staff given something to work towards. The pool area is small again not too much of a problem but the wall is black with mould and the spray fountain is broken and just left to pump water out again just poor standards. It is not the most expensive hotel but you still expect certain standards it is rated as 4 star i'm not sure when that was given but certainly would not get if checked today. Collapse

I stayed for two weeks in July, I am not sure I understand the reviews that the Canifor Hotel is getting. Firstly the room I had on the fourth floor was clear and tidy and was cleaned daily, the staff that I encountered from the reception to cleaners were very friendly and professional. I am unsure if I can answer the question regarding the food as I was only B&B, however, the breakfast was what you would expect from any hotel, this is a good hotel in a very good location and it is cheap if you are on a budget. At the Canifor Hotel we had a lot of EF students, but they did not bother us, they ate in a different area, yes the hotel seemed full of them, they were no more noisy than any other children. Maybe we were lucky with the two week spent at this hotel as I cannot fault this hotel and did not encounter problems that other holiday makers did. Collapse
Staff training urgently needed

A 10 day all-inclusive holiday for my partner and I and our two teenage children during the last week in July. Check-in:We arrived after midnight, however check-in was swift and trouble free and we were provided with a keycard which provided access to the room very like a contactless payment. The room: we made our way up to our room which was on the second floor. It was a long room ending in sliding glass doors to the balcony which was more or less south-facing and contained 4 single beds, two of which were pushed together. The mattresses were thin and uncomfortable and there was a sheet and quilt on each bed. We did not need the quilt. There were no facilities to make drinks in the room. A fridge was provided, however it didn't work, and one of the bedside lights didn't work. Credit where it's due, we reported these issues in the morning and they were fixed the same day, albeit the fridge was never very cold. Staff: The hotel was clean throughout, I cannot fault them there. We never actually saw our maid, but on all but one day the room was cleaned and tidied. There was a bottle of showergel in a bracket on the shower wall. It ran out the first day and despite leaving it out in plain sight it was never replaced. We always left the sliding doors to the balcony closed and locked. It was invariably unlocked after the maid had been. The biggest problem this hotel has is with the staff. This was the first time I had ever stayed in a hotel without having a single conversation with the staff, and we were there for 10 days! Without exception the staff were surly or uncommunicative. They understood English well enough, but NOBODY smiled, said a simple "Hello" or seemed remotely interested in either their guests or their guests' experience. The only conversations I saw them have were between themselves, and they seemed to uniformly consist of arguments in Maltese. Our holiday was all-inclusive, and they served shorts in VERY small glasses, and yet the barman in the evening bar seemed VERY put out when I turned up at the bar every 30 minutes or so. The all inclusive stopped at 11pm. Food: The food was adequate but basically at about school dinner level. There was little variety and no effort to showcase local dishes (although rabbit turned up a couple of times). The variety was wide enough that there was always something to choose, but the quality varied, particularly of the meat. Breakfast only varied by having poached eggs one day, fried the next. The bacon was greasy and so were the sausages, and the fried bread was, well, crispy. That was the extent of the cooked breakfast, and muesli, 'cornflakes' and 'cocopops' were also available. There were machines dispensing orange and pineapple juice which were produced from concentrate and coffee machines which produced a brown liquid barely recognisable as coffee. The dining room was poorly laid out and the tables left little space to manoeuvre. Poolside: the hotel is broadly south facing but has a wing which creates shadow over the poolside area in the afternoon. There were plenty of sunbeds available (which suggested to me that the 150 bedroom hotel was significantly under-occupied. The sunbed and parasols were provided free by the hotel. There were not enough parasols. Location: The hotel is only a short walk away from the Malta National Aquarium in one direction and the Bugibba bus station in the other. There are a number of shops, bars and eateries in the area and if cost allows I would recommend these as a better alternative to eating at the Canifor. I think this place would be significantly improved if it focused on what hotels are supposed to. Providing a pleasant stay for it's patrons. Collapse

We visited here in the beginning of May. Probably the worsrt hotel we have stayed! Not many facilities in the room or in the hotel. Very very basic and totally understaffed. Vegetarian food-non existance. The hotel was not ready to make us a vegetarian food on one day when there was hardly any veggie meal! Which was very unusual. And whatever basic veggie food was on the menu was unedible and most of the time served cold! Very Unhelful recepctionist, manager and restaurant manager. Rooms were very basic. If anyone has already booked their stay here, good luck!! Only plus point was its very near to the major bus station. We bought 3 day bus pass and travelled by bus across Malta. Malta is a beautiful country and the weather was beautiful. A trip to Gozo island is a must. Collapse
