I arrived at about 2:30pm with check in not open until 3pm and joined a veritable crowd of people waiting alongside a large collection of bags - the overall experience feeling more like arriving a hostel than a decent hotel. As an IHG Gold member I was probably entitled to ask for an early check in, but I didn't think about that and used the time to catch up on email. Once check in opened the staff were very efficient and the backlog of people was soon despatched to rooms. I received the key to my suite, took the rather noisy but effective elevator to the 21st floor and headed for the bathroom before taking a look round. On exiting the bathroom I heard a noise from the door and found a delightful young lady at the door who had been given the same room number. After a call to the front desk the guy there came immediately to the 21st floor and brought the keys to another room for the other guest and the matter was resolved. Inside the room there as a full size fridge freezer, two sets of crockery and cutlery, and enough saucepans to cook for a large family. The hob was efficient (athough I only boiled water for cups of tea) and there was a large microwave. This set up allowed me to simply buy cereals and milk for breakfast which suited me very well. The bed was comfortable, the internet connection satisfactory and the TV OK. There was a decent desk and working chair and power outlets in all the right places - it amazes me how many hotels don't have a power outlet next to the bed to allow phons to be charged on a bedside table. Everything was a little dated but all worked fine and this was an excellent base form my 3 days stay in NYC. 39th Street between 8th and 9th Avenue is relatively quiet compared to much of the neighbourhood, and looks a little run down, with a constuction site opposite the hotel. However, it is less than 5 mins work from the Port Authority Bus Terminus on 42nd Street, which is a stop for Airport Buses and a major subway station. From the hotel I walked to the Empire State Building, Times Square theaters, Pier 83 for a boat trip and to the High Line starting between 11th and 12th avenue on 34th Street. It was also a short subway ride from Port Authority Bus Terminus to Lower Manhattan where I visited the World Trade Center and 9/11 Memorial Museum. I was able to easily return to the room for meals purchased either from drug stores or from the many fast food outlets around. As I was alone, this suited me better than eating in restaurants. I took advantage of the guest laundry facility (not mentioned in the hotel facilities on the web site) and was able to wash and dry my dirty clothes. Due to jet lag I did this at about 3am, but I suspect this would have been a challenge at more popular times as 3 of the 5 dryers were out of action at the time of my visit. The guest computer with printer in the lobby seemed a great facility but was limited in it's use to me as it was not possible to download and print a pdf file, which was the thing I needed to do for on line tickets. This computer was running Windows XP - which was launched by Microsoft in 2002 and ended support in 2014. Bit of a joke and a one off item that could be replaced for the price of one night for one room in the hotel. In practice I emailed the pdf to the front desk staff who printed it for me, but I could have done that without wasting 10 mins discovering I couldn't do what was needed on the steam powered guest computer to which I was directed. In summary, Candlewood Suites Times Square did not create a great first impression but was a great base for visiting the sights of Manhattan.and provided well for my needs. Collapse

We arrived near midnight after a long domestic flight and given the key to our room with a view which we had paid for 8 days. What a view - walls of Windows and a loud air con noise outside the building . The room itself had seen better days with worn tatty furniture and a carpet showing wear. Not a good welcome ! The next day of course we asked for what we'd booked and after a considerable wait which was annoying we were given a decent room with the furniture upholstered and a feeling of clean . Things improved after that and the room had everything we needed. The curtain system tricked us for a while until we realized there were 3 sets and there were black out curtains. Pros. Full fridge - quiet Microwave -clean Dishwasher Cooktop - great to boil the " kettle " for a cup of tea Bathroom - small but sufficient Towels Etc - delivered to your door on request Trash -leave outside your door and it disappears Windows - that opened Air Con - effective Pantry - breakfast snacks OK Kitchen utensils -clean and tidy but no spoons Staff - always helpful ,if they couldn't help they sent us next door . No daily housekeeping suited us Lifts -quick and very quiet, never heard them in the room Wi Fi- effective and free Laundry -free and clean Walking distance to Penn Station and attractions -allow for sore feet but with the traffic congestion you get back quicker walking . Close to Maceys and others shops Eating places plentiful but choose one with a A rating for cleanliness Cons What if we hadn't complained would we have been left there??? So speak up !!! Construction 24/7 there for a while but nothing to do with the hotel. Sirens ,sirens and sirens but you get use to it - maybe ....but that's everywhere in NY. The Area - could be interesting but we felt safe at all times. Yes the room for us was great and the small closet and chest of drawers allowed us to stop living out of a suitcase . If booked as IHG members a free breakfast can be had a few doors down at the Irish pub. I would recommend this hotel . Collapse

My fiancé and I stayed here to go to Comic Con on Saturday, we checked in early on Friday. The front desk staff was very friendly, they even held our bags for us as we arrived earlier than check in. They kept our bags for us on Saturday as we went to the convention. The hotel is less than a ten minute walk to the Javitt Center. The hotel is located just a few minutes walk from Time Square. We stayed on the 18th floor room 1804 had a street view, they are doing construction across the street so not a lot to see. The only down fall would be the very firm mattress that killed our backs, but that is all personal preference. Do not let that stop you! We would definitely stay here again! Collapse

This hotel is a short walk to the centre of Times Square which makes it convenient for Subway lines to all areas of NYC. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. The rooms are self-contained with a kitchenette and free washing facilities. The only complaint we have is with the hard bed and noise from nearby building sites (something hard to avoid in NYC!). The room was due to be serviced once during our 10 day stay, but the day they came to service was only a day out from our check out so we didn't bother and just swapped our towels. Collapse
