We stayed in California garden Dec catering apartments (the above hotel is across the road and you can use the pool, games room and bar in the hotel ) We were a family/group of 16 which included a 10 month baby and 3 elderly that paid what I consider a lot of money for the quality of these apartments if they were nice money wouldn't matter but I defiantly feel we could have spent out money better else where! Although they are self catering, they are poor poor facilities in the apartments, we had two cups no bowls fee plates and some cutlery and one or two pans no kettle no microwave, the two ring hob would take 5 hours to boil some water in a pot! I was unable to make food, heat food prepare bottles or in general anything for my son. All of the rooms were with out a kettle, no one could even make a cup of tea in the mornings! I had to go out and buy a travel size kettle for 15e. Upon arrival there was no travel cot and was told I had to pay for it... not even a fee which would be returned later after inspection like some places. Simple I had to rent. In the end the hotel did agree to give the cot free ( not happily) but only coz I had emailed them prior to my trip, which they confirmed all kids under 2 are free! No option to rent a safe. We had 4 rooms only one room had a safe at all in the room, which didn't close properly!! You have to take self catering b&b no option to only use self catering! The breakfast is horrible rashers look like they come out of the packet and was cooked for 10seconds on each side. Breakfast is continental only Croissants and bread didn't exactly seem the fresh but I only availed of them 2 days. There was no option to pay for anything extra like a cooked breakfast. I believe ( I could be wrong) unless you went full board ya couldn't eat there for dinner.. not that I would want to from my poor breakfast experience but There was no option to pay for dinner! Pool is very shaded we had to walk across the road to the hotel and use that pool which was nice, but was constantly taken up with towels sometimes for hours on end and no one using them. In the evening time in our pool you might get some sun on the pool and in the morning time but for the most part of the day 12-5 there was no sun and the pool area is small. We did ring ahead and ask was it suitable for the elderly with disabilities and families they said yes, we had a family member who had difficulty walking and with her breathing and hired out a scooter thing you sit on, they would not allow her to leave it on the premises (even though it was in a corner in NO One way) it wasn't safe to park it outside unattended at night. They wouldn't even allow her to leave it in the large luggage room they had beside reception! She use to park it inside anyway and if they noticed it they would ring her and ask her to remove it! Disgraceful! The lifts were too small for her to bring up to the room! Reception staff can't even recommend local places like where nearest shop to get a kettle or Irish pub to watch a game! No iron or iron board in the room. One room had a iron board and no iron! House keeping ok, fresh towels every day. There is air con but only one unit in the hall way we had a two bedroom apartment and we had to leave the two bedroom doors open in order to gain any air con into the rooms. The living room/kitchen area would be clammy and warm as a result of the air con being in the hall way! Wouldn't stay here again in my opinion pay a little extra and stay in a hotel or diff accommodation. Only two very small lifts which one broke down for one day and you were left waiting 15 mins to go down stairs with a buggy as were on the third floor. It might suit a couple better then families as sometimes a couple wouldn't be spending as much time in the apartments. But still ya might like a cup of coffee in the morning and defo an iron to press out some items from being on the case! Location was good and some nice places to eat and shop beside it but that is prob the best I have. Staff had poor English! Collapse

The hotel and rooms were clean. Excellent location close to theme park, beach, bars and shops. the room had a TV but only had one English news channel, there is no fridge or kettle in the rooms. Pool view rooms face onto the night club next door, my room was in the smaller block facing the back street at the rear of the hotel, the room was quite with no outside noise. The pool and bar area was good with well priced drinks, the entertainment was catered for the Spanish, but as i was out every night this was not a problem. The only problem with this hotel was the food, the food can only be described as a disgrace, not a great choice and cold even at opening time 7pm, breakfast was no better and tasted revolting. Did try meals several times and it was always the same bad standard of food, ended out eating out for the rest of holiday.Told the rep about the food and she say the food was not great but there was a microwave oven to heat food up as the Spanish don't eat their food piping hot as the English do,and the hotel is a 3 star not a 5 star. I have stayed in both higher and lower star rated hotel's in Spain to this one and have always been served decent hot food. Booked the hotel with Thomson's, thinking that the holiday to be at good standard. With improvements to the food standard and some English entertainment, no night club next door this could be a good hotel. Overall Salou was a good holiday and will be back next year but definitely not at the California Gardens. Collapse

Stopped at this hotel with my friends for a long weekend, was very impressed with the facilities which the hotel offered. The hotel it's self I felt looked more like a 4/5 start hotel then a 3, the rooms were a good size and all came with a balcony for you be able to onto. There was aircon within the rooms and regular maid service daily. The food at the hotel was brilliant, there was kebab on the first night and it felt like I was just at home. We went full board for our stay, I'd say then only down fall is you have to pay for the drink for lunch& dinner. A big bottle of water was only €1.40 which you can share between 3. The pool area was fab, there was always sunbed available for you. If you come out the hotel, within a 5 minute walk you at all the shops and the bars. We went to the black bull to do quiz night twice, between 8-9 is happy hour, so you pay 2€ And get 2 cans of lager, I my self had vodka and coke which was 3.40€ but you got 2 Drinks so it was a bargain. Had a brilliant say here and would advise anyone to stop here! Collapse

I will start by saying that myself and my wife did a lot of trip advisor research before booking our hotel and we couldn't be happier with the result. When we arrived we came into the main reception and the very polite lady advised that we needed to walk to the other building reception. This is approx 20 yards, takes you past the hotel pools, and easy to roll your cases to. We read loads of reviews making out like this was a trek......complete rubbish....it's nothing at all. When we got to the other reception the lovely young girl was attending to people already so we just waited. She impressively spoke at least three languages whilst I was watching which includes English...again....many reviews said staff don't speak English......yes they do. Their English may not be perfect and they may struggle with strong regional English accents but they do speak English. We were checked in quite quickly and advised where to go from reception. The lift is small but in full working order and very very clean (noticed during our stay it was cleaned at least twice a day). We read a lot about people thinking the room was too small and the bathroom inadequately sized. Our room was on the 6th floor, had a double bed and a single in it, a good sized balcony which overlooked Farari land and Port Aventura, and fitted wardrobe. If this room were for a family of three or four...yeah...maybe a bit small, but it's perfect for couples. Tons of space! We did think there was a problem with the air con in the room, it didn't seem to come on. On checking with reception, our window wasn't shut properly and the air con won't come on if it isn't closed firmly. I would recommend to the hotel to maybe have a little notice about this to avoid enquirers at the desk (though it's probably more obvious to others so our bad there). No remote and yes you need to rent one from reception. No need as there's buttons on the tele and only three English channels (BBC World, CNBC, Bloomberg Europe) and these channels are next to one another so not much channel hopping to be done. Think they had Real Madrid tv so if a game was on you have that if you can watch in foreign language. Basic wifi is free but if you're wanting to stream you can purchase premium wifi from main reception. This isn't needed if you just check Facebook every now and again or like to check news apps like we do. Now to the pool....so so clean both in and around the pool. Very safe paddle pools for little ones and life guards for each pool. Plenty of sun beds available and a bar situated between both pools with reasonable prices for ice scream and beer. There is a very clear sign stating the rules of the pool which includes...NO RESERVING SUN BEDS. We read many reviews where people had their things moved to the side because they'd been gone for long periods and attempted to save sun beds. You're clearly warned of this both by the sign next to the pool and on the special hotel information channel on your tele (again, the hotel may benefit from directing guests attention to this channel or have it as the default channel). It's only fair as during busy times why shouldn't others use it if you aren't. The food has been described in various ways by numerous reviews which tells me one thing....everyone's taste is different. All I would say here is that the hotel doesn't just accommodate English....they accommodate German, American, Spanish, Catalan, French, Italian and so on. You won't get full English every morning or stuff like that. Breakfast involves different types of sausage, beans, egg, frittatas, cold meats and cheese. Then croissants, cinoman buns and stuff like that. It's lovely but would say the juice tastes slightly watered down and the coffee isn't superb. We only had half board so couldn't comment on lunch but dinner is remarkably varied. They have a hot food counter which has varied things per night like fish, a meat dish, chips and veg. Then there's the specials counter where there's a chef cooking something different per night. Then there's a salad bar. I would suggest to think about what you put on your plate, because if you go nuts you'll sit down and look at your plate and realise you have a weird combination. Take your time and sample little bits at a time. Better to be there for meal opening times to avoid busy scrums for food. The hotel is located an easy walk to the beach (about 10minutes), easy walk to main shopping area (10mins again), and is about a 20 minute walk to Port Aventura which is very safe, well lit and perfectly fine route for prams or mobility scooters. It has a supermarket across the road (called michaelangelos). Check-out was amazingly smooth and the coach picked us up from the main reception promptly and on time. If you're a bigger group or you've rented a safe or remote etc allow more time for check outs would suggest. Collapse
