Starfish boat to Cala Figuera and long lunch at restaurant at top of main street, full of locals, was excellent. Collapse

Stayed here for a week from 2 October all inclusive. I had a lovely time there and would definitely go back again [already looking at next years holiday!}. As stated in previous reviews the hotel is quite dated in some places but this did not spoil my time there. I know some people have made negative comments about this hotel but I feel that, for what I paid for my holiday, it was way above my expectations. I just need a relaxing holiday and that is what I got. My room was ok, although the bed was a bit uncomfortable, and there was some noise and disruptions [arguments etc] from other guests but that is not the hotels fault. The food was good if a bit basic but there are plenty of places around the hotel where you could get a decent meal at a reasonable price. There are a lot of stairs and the area is quite steep but I found it manageable [I have a respiratory condition] and just took my time and stopped to admire the beautiful scenery. I was aware of this prior to going there as it is mentioned in a lot of reviews and on Thomas Cook. I found all the staff very friendly and helpful - I find that if you are nice to people they tend to be the same back. It was coming to the end of the season but they still seemed to have a lot of energy and enthusiasm for their jobs - especially the maids who always greeted me with a smile. Majorca is a beautiful island and the people are always friendly, they go out of their way to make you feel welcome. All in all I had a fantastic time, lovely hotel, friendly staff and a beautiful location, what more can you ask for the price. Looking forward to going back next year. Collapse

We arrived at the hotel after a long 2 hour transfer from Palma, the coach dropping us on the road to the front as the main entrance is on a one way street about 50 yards away. It consists of 2 hotels which have been 'linked' by a bridge. Cala Gran with reception is on the left with Costa del Sur on the right with restaurant. Both sides have retained bar and pool facilities and all night entertainment is held around the Cala Gran pool area. The hotel is situated pretty much as described in the advertising blurb, right at the head of Cala Gran cove with only the roadway between you and the beach. The orientaion of the accomodations means that if you want a 'sea view' it is only available from some rooms to the front of Cala Gran and you have to pay a premium to get that. The drawback is that you are then directly above the 'entertainment area' which is VERY loud untill about 11 pm and moderately loud after that till everyone goes to bed. The Costa del Sur side is Y shaped in plan and seems to be the better bet for peace and quiet but only if you are on a top level, at the back facing the Cala Gran!(we werent) ACCESS: The hotels are not very disabled friendly, there are lifts and a stairlift down to the restaurant but the issue seems to be more as an afterthought. We were not expecting a great deal from the hotel, given that we were booked via EasyJet holidays for £600 half board for the pair of us for 7 days. We had seen the area on a previous visit to the Island and were primarily there for the area and beach. The hotel itself is very dated with many areas needing some TLC. ROOM: In our room, 2206 1st floor front above the bar area in the 'annexe', the bathroom was very dated and small. The bath itself was chipped and rusty and the wash basin was directly behind the door, not accessible unless the door was closed first. The bedroom decor requires renewing, looking very tired and late 80's. Thje balcony doors didnt lock shut properly and although they appeared double glazed they didnt keep any noise out. Obviously, being at the front and above the bar was not ideal and if we were in the bar at 1am we would not have noticed the noise..and if we had been in the bar then returned to the room to sleep the sleep of the drunk and insensible we would not have been awoken by furniture being moved around upstairs and someone packing and leaving for the early transfer bus home...and if we were early morning Joggers we would not have noticed the noise of the bin lorries, buses or mopeds at 5am either. There was an occasional 'wiff' of sewer that appeared to come from the A/C unit (it worked fine) but thinking about it now it may have been from outside wafting in past the non existant door seals. There is what appears to be a sewerage pumping station on the beach side of the road about 50 yards away and I did get a wiff of that one day when walking by. The housekeeping staff were very good, keeping the room tidy and clean, changing towels etc. We took a low wattage (600w) travel kettle as it seems the norm for hotels not to have the coffee/tea making facility at this 'star' rating anyway. It didnt trip out the room power! No fridge in the room though, big thumbs down there! FOOD: we were half board on this trip, should have saved the money! Breakfast was fine, usual Spanish fare catering for the good mix of nationalities and included fruit, cereals (the sugar puffs were good,), breads, various meats and cheeses plus the egg, scrambled and fried, sausage and bacon option. Coffee and tea, fruit juices too. Dinner was typical of the type found in many 3 star hotels, we found it a bit bland and un-interesting but there were plenty of guests who seemed to enjoy it, piling plates high. Lunch, from the little seen when walking through the dining room to the beach, seemed to be of a similar nature but with salads etc being predominant. Again other guests seemed to be enjoying it. We found a few really nice and reasonably priced cafe' bars and restaurants in the immediate area that hit the 'spot' so next year its B&B or self catering! IMMEDIATE AREA: The hotel has a 'strip' of pathway and plants, trees etc between the 2 halves which is accessed via the lower ground and some pretty steep steps. The path leads down to the beach (under the road via the diving centre) and up to the tennis courts, appartment complex and a large pond and restaurant on part of the 'strip'. The beach is about the biggest in the area with wonderful white sand, clear blue water and the usual beds n brollys (14euros per day, get there before 9.30am for best spots) small shop, bars and cafe's. The cove itself is very safe for families with small kids but it can get pretty crowded at times, pretty popular with locals on the weekends too. the water close in is shallow enough for non swimmers and kids and once about 60' out it gets pretty deep. Ideal for snorkelling and scuba, the fish love the bread rolls i pinched from the breakfast bar, there are hundreds of fish that cruise around by the rocks and they will happily mob you untill the bread is gone! ( this was my first try of snorkelling, I was that pleased i had to get a go pro style camera to record the fish!) The dive school by the hotel seemed to have a steady flow of clients and would take inexperienced punters on accompanied dives around the cove. There were some 'pedaloes' for hire on the beach, bit expensive though. There is a local company that will hire out 'surf kyacs' for a reasonable fee but you have to phone the day before to book and ensure weather conditions are ok and they then meet you there. LOCAL AREA: The area is about 200 yards from the local centre, this is a maze of streets and alleyways with some very good (and some poor) restaurants, bars and shops. Very busy at night with the shops staying open till very late (11pm). We loved it around there, the hard bit is sorting the shops out from good quality local goods and the not so good chinese import stuff. Sorting the good and bad bars is an enjoyable trial and error exercise! TRANSPORT: The local bus company run to the main towns in the area and occasionaly to Palma, there is a pretty good service along the coast up to Cal Malloca, Porto Christo etc but you have to watch the timings for getting back. There are plentifull excursions running every day, these have to be booked via reception and are not cheap! It may be best to hire a car from one of the local outlets, just remember that the whole of the island has parking isues in towns, the roads are VERY narrow and the local bus and truck drivers are nutters!! There is a good local cycle hire company who also hire out scooters etc, worth a try. Most of the area is fairly flat making easy riding. The Marina area of Cala d'Or is a fairly easy 20 minute stroll, come out of the hotel to the beach road turn right and keep going, and is well worth the effort with a good selection of very good restaurants and bars as well as all the fantastic Gin Palaces to dream of owning. On the bright side there is a company on the quayside that will rent you a small boat for 4 hours and 80 euros, bear in mind the deposit is big though. Collapse

I can't fault this hotel. From arriving to leaving it was suberb. The reception staff were great and very helpful. They helped me with knowing when and where there would be markets. The one they suggested was huge, I haven't been to a market like it. It really is a street market. The taxi drive isn't too far away but it does cost. The market was worth it though. Bounce castles were also at the market with donkey rides. The only issue was WiFi with the hotel was but that isn't a massive issue when you're on holiday. It was just a bit glitchy. Every member of staff that I met there were always friends and happy to help you. A very popular staff member was Damien (the restaurant manager) He made meal time fun for the kids and always made sure you left with a smile on your face. My daughter was upset to find he wasn't there one day as it was his day off. The all inclusive was the best I've experienced. I can not fault the food. It was Delicious, hot and fresh every meal time. There was never an empty option either as fresh cooked food was constantly brung out. The puddings were always the best. There was a chocolate fountain one evening!! My daughter is a picky eater and so I was a bit worried but there was always an array of selection to cater for everyone and I shouldn't have worried!! She even tried squid and loved it. The hotel really has a good set of chefs. I also had no problem with the room service. The bar was always nicely stocked and a happy chirpy barman always serving you. The pools are good size and its nice siting by the side of it. There is fantastic evening entertainment which we all really enjoyed. There was also a mini disco for the kids before the entertainment which my daughter loved. The walk to the beach is only minutes and wow what an beach!! It's absolutely gorgeous. Situated only a few minutes walk from the hotel is a few streets with shops and restaurants. About a 10 minute walk away in a marina which holds some fabulous boats! We stopped and had milkshakes at a cafe there. I had an amazing holiday while staying here and I plan to go back next year. Thank you to every member of staff there. Collapse
