Took my elderly mother out for a drive yesterday as it was a glorious hot day and stopped off at Cabra castle for lunch, we took our seats in the lounge area and waited about 10 minutes for someone to come take our order for drinks, finally I had to go to the bar to order our drinks i was not asked to take a seat and they would be brought down the us instead I had to make two journeys to bring them to our table I asked the bar lady to get someone to take our order. We waited another 5/6 minutes finally I had to ask a waitress that was on her way to clear tables outside, another few minutes passed before she took our order. The menu was very limited so we settled on a small chicken curry & chips for mother and a ceaser salad for myself, my mother couldn't eat her curry as it was so spicy (she is used to eating currys). When our food was finished I took my mother to the toilets as I couldn't see where they were I again had to ask I was directed to the toilets which had three steps to them & back considering how elderly she was I was not offered the disabled toilets & I was so annoyed at this stage at having to ask for service I didn't think about disabled toilets. However when we got back to our table our plates was cleared. Still no one came to ask about deserts or coffee which we had decided to have before we left, after 5 or more minutes had passed I went to the bar to pay the bill at this stage we had enough. The girl asked if everything was all right for us I said no actually it was a terrible experience she looked shocked told me to take a seat she'd get someone to come to see me, few customers in the area stopped talking to hear our conversation I followed her told her I didn't want to discuss this in public so she escorted me to the reception area told me me get the management to come to me, the manager Johnny came from his office I told him my complaints he apologized said he'd look after my bill I said no that's not why I was complaining I was very angry at this stage as the whole experience had upset my mother. I went to the bar to pay my bill & was told the bill was settled I insisted I pay my bill another few minutes passed before she got the authority to take my money. I left so so annoyed that a glorious day spent with my mother was spoiled .. also I didn't say was that in an established venue I wouldn't have expected that brown/red sauce , mustard & vinegar would be served in little plastic bags that needs a sissors to open them I would have expected more from a castle!! I'd only expect that in one of the high Street fast food outlets. Since this experience I was speaking to a friend that was booking a family meal for their wedding anniversary and was left holding on 10 minutes when she called to book a table she hung up and called back 20 minutes later only to be told that they came back to her but she hung up! She had phoned from her mobile phone. Needless to say they won't be back to this establishment in the future. I visited Cabra castle two years ago for lunch with friends which was lovely but the menu has not changed since still the same, no going back.....!!! Collapse

This one-night stay at Cabra Castle was the highlight of our trip to Ireland. We were there early enough in the day to explore the beautiful grounds and enjoy the twists and turns of the beautiful castle. They have a delightful garden where you can get lunch and/or drinks. It was just so relaxing to sit back and enjoy the beautiful grounds and towering castle. Dinner that evening and breakfast the next day were outstanding. Rooms were very comfortable and well appointed. Definitely a must-do if you haven't experienced a night in a castle. And, apparently, the castle is one of the most haunted but we never saw any evidence of that - wish we had. It would have added to the overall charming experience. Collapse
