Our trip with Superbreak was seamless. Booking online with them is simple and easy. We travelled from London to Newton Abbot by train and picked up our hire car right by the station. On arrival at the hotel the team at Bovey Castle take care of everything. The hotel is in a beautiful setting with easy access to main roads to discover the rest of the county. I'd highly recommend as a short break. Collapse

I wanted to book something special for my husband for his birthday treat and Bovey castle didn't disappoint. The staff are superb and so helpful and everything from the moment we arrived was just great. There are currently building works going on but from what I understand they will be finished soon and an old building like that will have little areas that are being tidied so don't let other reviews deter you. We had lunch in Smiths before packing my husband off to the spa so I could decorate his room for his birthday. After the amazing spa treatment we went to our room which was lovely and the comfiest bed I think I have slept in! Dinner at Smiths was fine, we had the venison the only complaint was the portion size, there really was not much meat on the plate. I asked the lovely waitress whether they could write happy birthday on my husband's plate and they did one better and brought out a plate of petit fours with a candle and sang happy birthday which was a nice touch. Walking around the grounds is just a perfect way to spend an afternoon and being able to use the pool after 5.30 when the children are asked to vacate meant we had a very relaxing day. Dinner on the second night in the great western was just superb. We had the beef welly and it was out of this world. (We had the same waitress from the night before; a lady with dark hair - she is just so lovely). I was a little sad to pack up the following morning but we needed to return to the glum reality of the school run and housework. A little slice of heaven for a weekend though and one that we hope to repeat soon. Collapse

We have stayed at Bovey on many, many occasions and although it has looked tired in places we have always been very impressed by the amazing service and how our children were warmly welcomed. We booked a lodge last minute for Mother's Day - they are £500 + per night so not low cost by any means but the surroundings are so beautiful and the service previously has been amazing so justified it to ourselves. We tried earlier in the week to book an afternoon tea and lunch in the main restaurant but were told they were fully booked which was disappointing. We ended up taking our own cake and settling for lunch in the brasserie. When we arrived it was not the usual welcome and we drove ourselves to the lodge - previously we have had someone come with us. The lodge we discovered had no working wifi and as I run an internet business and my husband has to be in contact for his work this was a major issue ( as no mobile signal either). No-one came to the lodge to try and fix it so gave up trying to fix it ourselves. The lodge looked incredibly tired and not the kitchen was not very clean. When we went to bed that night we discovered that the duvet on our super king size bed was actually a double inside a KS duvet cover. There were no extra blankets so we both ended up cold during the night trying to share the very small duvet. We took the dog for a walk and came across the Hawk display which we have seen many times before - we stood some distance away with two of our youngest children and were told in front of the other guests watching to leave with our dog - it was not said politely and was very embarrassing. Lunch in the Brasserie was expensive and at best pub quality. The spa/pool area still needs finishing - the changing rooms are tired and shabby in places and there was a wet dog smell in the lobby as we went in. There appeared to be nothing special for Mother's Day at all in the hotel. It may be 5 Star in places but the lodges are not - they still have a long way to go for the whole hotel to feel 5 star. We have stayed in many, many 5 star hotels in the UK and across the World and this is not quite up there yet. If you want to go for the stunning location then yes but you could just go for afternoon tea and get the same result! Collapse

2nd visit to bovey castle for an extended birthday weekend. Taking in my first afternoon tea won't be my last A fantastic room looking over the moors weather was not so kind but who cares when it's so good inside. Spa was superb and the pool is one of the best. Took up the land rover experience fantastic instructor which was just as well on such a wet slippery track. Never want to leave this place but the next visit must be in the summer want to sit outside with a glass of prosecco Look forward to my next visit. Thanks to all the staff @ Bovey castle Collapse

A lovely castle in lovely surroundings. Throughout our stay all the staff were very polite and very attentive. Ate in 'Smith's brassiere' for the 1st evening and meal was good. Ate in the main dinning room 'The Great Western' the following evening and it was an exquisite fine dinning spectacular. Our room was superb with all the complimentary additions that make your stay a little more special. Well done to all the staff. Collapse

We experienced a wonderful overnight stay. The afternoon tea was scrumptious and set in a lovely, relaxed room with views - a nice change to a restaurant layout where many afternoon teas are situated. I had a great massage in the spa, would definitely return for this alone. The pool area was great. There was some construction going on at the time which didn't bother me, however, I would expect some basic elements in the changing rooms that were missing e.g. a swimsuit dryer, lockers that you don't need to obtain a key for. We had dinner in the brasserie which was great. Although, portions were slightly on the smaller side for the price paid. Service was brilliant. We stayed in a newly renovated room. It was again, very nice and comfortable with lovely touches one would expect in a 5* hotel. Overall, we had a great stay and would return. We did experience a hiccup at checkout where items on our bill were very mixed up. This isn't helped by quite a consfusing bill layout. I received a call several hours after checkout to rectify which I do not wish to experience at any hotel. Collapse
