Terrible Hotel - One bad experience led to another!

As loyal customers to this hotel, my parents stayed here in January as they do every year. During their stay, my mother found a hair in her food at the annual evening dinner which meant she refused to eat anything else and her evening gown was ruined by the amount of dust in the room. As a very upset customer, she complained and the hotel offered to send a bottle of prosecco for the inconvenience. This did not compensate for the terrible stay and after weeks of discussing with various managers, they finally agreed to offer a one night stay voucher as an apology. As she wasn’t able to attend, the voucher was passed on to me (her daughter) and we stayed for one night on Saturday. Let’s just say, I’ve stayed in a few hotels and you’d be better off staying in a Travel Lodge. PARKING We arrived to check in to an extremely small and unorganised car park with no spaces left and people double parking. Confused, we were approached by a member of staff who told us they were full and we should block other cars in and leave my keys with reception so they can move it if needed! The fact that they charge ridiculous amounts for parking anyway, I didn’t feel happy blocking in some poor sole or at all comfortable leaving my car just parked anywhere! THE HOTEL Walking into the reception, the hotel is extremely dated, grubby and worn out. There was a long que to check in and we were greeted by a miserable staff member who clearly didn’t want to be there. The hotel is under refurbishment so most lifts were out of service which meant we had to walk to the other side to get to our room which was just an inconvenience. No restaurant and no bar (not that we cared as we avoided staying in the actual hotel any longer than we needed to!) THE ROOM Absolutely disgusting. You would think that a complimentary room after one bad experience, they would have made sure this was to a good standard but how wrong were we! There was an empty coffee cup left on the side, the floor was damp under the fire sprinkler for some reason, there was coffee stains UP THE WALL! And the dust…don’t even get me started. You can see from the pictures attached how dusty the curtains were. Exactly what ruined my mother’s dress in the first place. The bathroom was rusty (again see photos) and I even hesitated taking a shower or leaving my clothes anywhere in fear of becoming dirty. NOISE There was a wedding party going on till 12:30am and congratulations to the happy couple but seriously, the walls are not soundproof and you can hear every noise. Even the floor board creak so you can hear every movement from the floor above. SPA We wanted to chance the spa and wish we hadn’t. The Jacuzzi whirlpool had grime at the bottom of it which was disgusting and looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in weeks. The rest of the spa was okay but definitely not the standard I’d expect from a Marriot hotel. Poor people who pay for membership there! OVERALL REVIEW Unless the refurbishment reveals a less grubby dated hotel, new cleaners are hired and staff are trained, you’re better off going somewhere else. The only good thing about this hotel is the location but that’s about it. Judging by the number of people at reception complaining at checkout, they obviously had similar bad experiences. I didn't even bother saying anything as I know I wont, nor my parents will ever be returning here again. Check out The Cumberland Hotel down the road, we went for dinner there and the service and cleanliness was superb so can imagine the hotel being the same! Collapse
Great location otherwise nothing positive to say about any area of the hotel

Under going refurbishment. was not told this when booking. all areas outdated, grubby and generally worn out. On a weekend NO bar NO restaurant NO lift, the hotel told guests it was ok to block my car in and charged me for the parking inconvenience. very noisy from wedding guests and night, could not sleep no sound proofing for the music. NO breakfast room, served in another building walk across car park in the rain to find tables in a function room with no windows and not enough tables so long queue. Health club dirty. No robes available so to get to our treatments we had to walk along the hotel corridor in wet swim stuff. Staff too busy talking to each other could not care less. No where to buy a drink at the outdoor pool and the staff shrugged when asked where we could get one. Wedding guest smoking around the pool area. Kids in the whirl pool. After our treatments advised to sit and drink, but no rest area for after treatment and no water fountain. Wet towels everywhere and no one cleaning up. Everywhere needs a desperate refurbishment. The treatments were top class and the therapists were the only professionals I met all weekend. Very expensive rate with no reduction for renovations. An embarrassment to the Marriot chain. Collapse

Stayed here many a time and it has been a very pleasant stay, on this occasion very disappointing, the hotel is under renovation which is not a great deal, but very dusty and found some areas to be not clean. Our room was a standard room but found it very in need of updating, they appear to be doing all the cosmetic alterations to the public areas only, hopefully if and when we return next year it will be a well improved hotel Collapse
Refurbishment in progress.

We have stayed here many times over the years and is one of our favourite hotels. This year there is much needed refurbishment taking place. To be fair we were told when booking this was happening. The staff were coping with the disruption very well in difficult circumstances. Breakfast was moved to different rooms each day and I have to say was not up to their usual high standard. The food was only just warm at best. The staff were doing their best though. The bar had been moved to a room across the car park which obviously wasn't as pleasant. However we will happily return when work is finished. Collapse

Now, this is not a review of the Marriott Highcliffe main hotel. That, I cannot comment on. However my husband and I were bought a day pass to the hotel's spa facilities with a treatment each as a gift. It had good reviews, so we were really surprised at how badly kept it was. It was filthy! The indoor and outdoor pools themselves were passable, but grouting was cracked and old. Beside the indoor pool, the mops and buckets had just been left poolside, making it look messy and no care to make the place look good at all.The steam room (AAAARGH yuck!) was seriously revolting with brown gunge/scum all around the edges. The jacuzzi was out of order, but didn't look clean either. The sauna was far too hot to stay in and I love saunas. The outdoor pool was the best bit as it was outdoors and heated, but still old cracked grouting, shaky and unstable steps into the pool, disgusting yellow stains on the sun loungers, bird poo on the glass screens, walls and on some of the loungers. The changing rooms were fine. In fact I couldn't wait to have a shower and have a wash. The one good thing I will say is that the treatments we had - facial and shoulder, back and neck massage- were fantastic. The treatment rooms were clean and relaxing and the therapists were friendly and professional. Seriously though - this hotel needs to sort out some serious issues with their spa facilities. Collapse
