We stayed the night before joining a cruise in Southampton. We found the hotel adequate for our needs and lots of parking. We were saddened by the fact that it is a beautiful hotel but needs so much work doing to it. It could be outstanding but would need so much money spent on it. The reception staff were average but the bar and breakfast waiters were good. Collapse

I fly down once a month to see my daughter & have stayed in a few hotels around the Southampton area. My daughter & I only stayed the one night with breakfast but I must say the staff, food & facilities were exellent. My daughter who has just turned two last April loved the space & gardens but the spa was her favorite. "First class" thank you for a wonderful stay I would highly recommend this hotel. Collapse

Disastrous Stay! No Management on site during the weekend to raise concerns to instead it had to be put in writing after the weekend! They took full payment at time of booking. Do not waste your money. There are much better hotels in Southampton to stay. The hotel does not care about their guests! Below is an outline of the issues we had. We have given the hotel the chance first to respond before posting but their response was poor so we want to warn others. The hotel is in desperate need of structural repair as well as redecoration. Large cracks on the back of the hotel, steps and walls crumbling away and outside rear painting is desperately needed. The inside of the hotel is tired, dark and dismal. We each paid £115 (£230 per room) for the package. This is a expensive price for what we got but had it met all our pre promised expectations then this would have been acceptable. When we arrived at the hotel at 10.45am we were surprised and pleased to find we were able to check into one of our two rooms at this time. A good start! We quickly changed and headed for the spa as two of us had treatments starting at 11. After two of us receiving our treatment we joined the others in the pool. We were told by one of our group that we had to share a locker between two people. After cramming all our belonging into a tiny space we over heard another couple of guest who were also disappointed to have been sharing ( one had to share her locker with two others!). Also if one person was in a treatment who had the key the other person had to wait to be able to get their items from the locker. We were then told that the steam room was out of order and would not be in use for the rest of the day. The floors were dangerously slippery and I nearly slipped several times along with my friends and numerous people who passed us during the day. There were no handrails, rubber matting or anything to help ease the problem. We made our way to the poolside but due to the volume of people there was nowhere to sit! The hotel is advertised as a spa. This is certainly not the case. It is in fact a hotel with amenities. A spa should offer relaxation and people should leave feeling they have been pampered and spoilt during their day. Sadly this was not the case. Laminated signage was posted throughout the spa including the sign for the toilet. Not really giving off an air of sophistication more like a public swimming pool. My friend went to use the only toilet in the spa and found it had no lock. She went to reception to ask if there was another toilet available and was told she would need to go back to the main hotel. The hotel and spa are not linked together and we had to go outside into the grounds to access the spa. We were lucky the weather was dry! We returned to our room around 1.00 and ordered afternoon tea to be delivered to our room. It arrived and for the price (£14.95) was poor. Just four sandwiches each (two slices of bread pp in total). Pre brought cakes selection. The scones were nice however. When the food arrived we had to ring reception to say they had missed the milk for the tea, then had to ring again as we didn't have plates. During our tea we received a phone call to say that our other room ready. Upon entering we're we're immediately confronted by a swarm of ladybirds. They covered the window and ceiling. Surely if this room had just been made up prior to us entering then the ladybirds would have been seen! We immediately rang reception who said they would find us another room. The only room available was on another floor. After going to this room, it was certainly in need of redecorating. It was tired and the view from the window was of a flat roof. The beds were a double and a small single (used, I should expect, by a child). I had to sleep on the child's bed. The purpose of the package was to be together. However we were now on two different floors and I was sleeping on a child's bed! We returned to the spa and the other two had their treatments. I had left my original towel in my room and when I asked if I could have a fresh towel I was told on this occasions she would allow me however guest are only permitted one towel for the day. I have never been to a spa before where towels are rationed and clients are made to feel wrong for asking for a new one. After returning to our room to freshen up for the evening we all went to use the showers. Both rooms had issues with the showers. Both were dribbles! The temperatures were either very hot or cold. We decided to use our first room as the base for the girls night in food package. We decided to open the windows to vent the room before the food arrived however the sash windows would not stay open so we had to prop it open using a bible! The food arrive exactly on time however when the waiter left we had to ring reception as no plates had been delivered. There was also no where to put the food platter. We had to clear the suitcase stand to rest the tray on. There was no where in the room to sit and relax. Two people stayed on their beds, one person used the dressing table chair and the other person sat on the floor. The food was pre packed and frozen. For a hotel to serve that standard of food is an embarrassment. Frozen Indian snacks, wedges and mini pizzas was not the sort of food we were expecting or paid such a lot of money for. As our rooms were on different floors so at midnight we had to walk down a corridor, go down in a lift and enter our room in our pyjamas. Whilst getting ready for bed we realised how thin the walls are! We could hear a very amorous couple enjoying their stay, which continued through the night and first thing in the morning. When speaking to our friends the next morning they too had the same issue. We worked out, due to both rooms location, that in fact we were being kept awake by the same room. So that's four people with very little sleep. We are all big breakfast fans so decided to go to breakfast at 9.30. We had to wait ages to be offered a hot drink. When we did we asked if we just go up and help ourselves to the buffet breakfast, to be told that they weren't doing a buffet breakfast today but we could choose what we wanted and it would be plated and served to us. The menu on the table clearly stated buffet! After waiting a long while for our breakfast the waitress returned to say that the chef had run out of sausages. One of the key ingredients of a cooked breakfast and an item we had all requested was not available. This is a fundamental error by the kitchen. I asked how the sausages were prepared and told they were baked and then grilled at the end. Clearly the chef had not cooked enough and was also not prepared to cook anymore. I could sort of understand this if we were late for breakfast but we were not. When our breakfast, minus the sausages, arrived only three came out. We asked where the fourth was and the waitress apologised and said the chef would cook another one. Three of us had finished our breakfast by the time our friends arrived. After returning to our rooms to pack we decided to ask at reception to speak to someone from the management team. She and another colleague both said there was no one in to speak to us and to put our complaint in writing, to the Hotel Managers PA. She confirmed that no management work at weekends. We live in Southampton and would have loved to have been able to recommend this sort of package to our work colleagues, family and friends however we have been left disheartened, dissatisfied and throughly let down by your hotel. Upon returning home two of us out our concerns in writing. Firstly the response was addressed to both of us. Not individual as our complaints had been. None of our concerns were addressed at all instead we were told that they wouldn't charge us for our afternoon tea and would invite us back for another afternoon tea as an apology. I replied that this was unacceptable. We do not want to ever return and would want the value of the afternoon tea instead. The response was no. They would give us £30 in total as refund. Only three of us had the afternoon tea (14.95 x 3 = £44.85) and a £30 refund = £74.85 / 4= £18.71 pp refund. Total cost for us was £115 x 4 plus £44.85 = £504.85. This is an insult. If you use this hotel then do not pay upfront. Collapse

We took friends to celebrate a special birthday. We were taken through to the cocktail bar where a family afternoon tea was taking place. The waiter seemed doubtful that we could have decaff tea but after a very short wait he returned with a pot of regular breakfast tea and another of decaff. Phew. Despite the booking having been made 3 weeks previously and the request that whilst the booking was for four people, one of the teas needed to be gluten free, when the food arrived there were only 2 finger sandwiches for our gluten free member, a tea plate with 5 small fancies and NO SUITABLE SCONE. In my opinion this is an important component of afternoon tea. We did query this with the waitress who brought a colleague to our table in order for us to discuss the problem. In fairness to the hotel they eventually served ample gluten free sandwiches to our guest and offered a return visit whereupon they would ensure the "birthday boy's" dietary requirements are fully catered for. The staff were pleasant and completely accommodating. Whilst the visit was initially disappointing they did all they could to rectify our problems and we look forward to returning in the warmer months. Collapse

We visited the Spa for a Valentines couples Mud Rasul. On exiting the main hotel lobby and making our way through the garden to the spa entrance we both noticed how tired the place looked. Dirty windows, rust, and generally in need of a good tidy up. We were greeted in Spa reception by the lovely Laura, who was wonderful and explained how our treatment would work. She was sweet and friendly and we were off to a great start. On entering the changing rooms we were both again disappointed with how tired the whole place looked...and it was freezing cold! Never mind we thought, the spa will be warm, which it was! Laura greeted us Spa-side with 2 pots of scrub and mud and we entered the Mud Rasul room. Laura explained that we have around 10 mins to apply the products and then the Rasul would start and that we could open the inner door if it felt too hot. She got us an extra cup of water and left us to enjoy. The Mud application was fun and the products were lovely, but sadly, the Rasul didn't work. No steam arrived after 10, 15, 20 minutes and so we waited and waited until we eventually showered off and went to find Laura! Unfortunately the hotel had an engineer dealing with some electrical issues who had tripped the system, resulting in our failed treatment! Laura was very apologetic and gave us a full refund on our treatment. We then thought we would spend some time just enjoying the rest of the spa. The sauna and steam room worked well but were very small...big enough for 2-4. The in spa showers were nice and hot too but the jacuzzi didn't work! We sat in and pressed the button and waited....but nothing! We left after an hour, start to finish! What was supposed to be a half-day spa experience followed by lunch ended up with us both feeling totally disappointed and leaving to head to an alternative place for lunch! The spa is honestly in need of a good clean and general tidy up. The towel rails are rusty, there are tiles missing in various places throughout the spa, the changing rooms are cold...it all has more of a community fitness club feel as opposed to something I would consider a 'spa'. The whole 'spa experience' is very over-sold on the website, claiming that you are 'immediately enveloped by the serene ambience that promises to deliver the indulgent spa experience our clients have come to expect' - this is without a doubt not what we experienced at all, it was actually the complete opposite from our perspectives. Highly disappointed. Collapse

This hotel is absolutely worth the visit. Old and classy and very nice. Rooms are nice and clean. The restaurant is nice and the staff are very friendly. In addition, this is a spa hotel so here you can definitive combine business and pleasure.
