Wow...where do I star? I find this place online and it has GREAT (but misleading) reviews. They say nothing like Be Careful this place is in a rough area... I arrived a little after midnight. The hotel is two short blocks from Bart and I'm not too fearful as I live in a major urban city and take public transportation frequently and often late in the evening. However as soon as I arrived at Mason street, I became quite nervous. I am a 5'3 woman and I was traveling alone. Just before I arrived I called the hotel but no one answered. Strange, I thought. When I arrived at the hotel, the door was locked, and there was no attendant in the lobby. In the window was a sign that read, "Guests use your room key in the evening." I'm not a guest yet...so...obviously no room key. I tried to walk around the building to see if there was another entrance. Nope...negative. By then I was in panic mode, and I became very aware that the numerous people who lived outside in front of the hotel were aware of me as well. I was ready to walk to the nearest open building that looked safe-ish. Luckily the front desk attendant had returned. I banged on the window as if my life depended on it and he let me inside. My nerves were shot! I slept terribly on a lumpy and past it's life expectancy bed, and heard the banter from the people who lived outside in the street all night long. I had very little sleep that night. In summary. Don't be fooled by the quaint and charming pictures online. Let me be CLEAR. This hotel is in a SKETCHY neighborhood. It needs an upgrade urgently. The carpet was dirty and old. I'm sure it is original to the building. The bed was horribly uncomfortable, lumpy, and not firmly on top of the bed frame. I felt gross all night and couldn't wait to check out. Thank goodness I booked this location for 1 night only. It's a great deal...but there is a reason for its low price. Collapse

I read the reviews going in to our stay at Hotel Bijou but was still a bit overwhelmed. We are from Chicago so are used to all the city has to offer, both good and bad. The homeless situation is tragic! They did not bother us a bit but after staying in an ocean view room the night before and then opening the window here was a wake up call. It's difficult to watch and can easily put a damper on your plans. The staff were wonderful! The price we paid for the room was great considering the cost of SF rooms elsewhere. They had coffee, tea and cocoa. Nice little breakfast bags in the am. Not the cleanest but the bathrooms and beds were spotless and that is all that matters. They are undergoing renovations as well. Hopefully it will be a turn for the better. Best of luck to you Hotel Bijou!! Hotel parking was $40 a night up the street. Collapse

Was in town for a conference and missed the conference rate and didn't want to pay over $300/night. Found Hotel Bijou for less than half that rate and only 1 block from the conference, so I booked right away. The hotel could use some updating, but the bed was comfortable and the bathroom was clean and maybe more recently updated. The level of service from the staff is excellent--very helpful and accommodating. The location is hard to beat at its price, close to many restaurants, bars and the BART station, although on Mason St there is a large concentration of homeless people that can be loud at times, but otherwise didn't cause any problems. Hotel is very small, the walls are paper thin and everything is pretty dated. At night you can hear everything going on outside/on the street, and you can hear what is going on in the room next door as well. The breakfast was a bag with a packaged pastry, an orange, and a mini water bottle. They served yogurt as well but no spoons. The front desk staff was nice and accommodating, but the hotel overall was disappointing. Don't let the photos online fool you. No air conditioning or heating either. Collapse

We were somewhat concerned when we booked Bijou for our stay, but the reasonable rate left us with no other alternatives. San Francisco is exorbitantly expensive and this applies to accommodation as well. Upon arrival we were greeted by a very cheerful and welcoming member of the staff. We were offered a glass of wine; a very nice gesture. Our room #300 was a double double (2 Queen Beds). A bit outdated, yet very well kept. Bathroom was also super clean and in good condition too. The building itself is quite old and has a charming retro feeling. Many people complain about the area. Indeed there is a huge homeless problem, but this applies everywhere in SF, not only in Union Square. It's not the hotel's responsibility to deal with this issue, therefore I believe it's somewhat unfair to blame them on the homeless problem. We didn't feel any kind of threat for ourselves or our personal belongings. This also applies for the noise. It's the most central part of the city. There is traffic and there is noise around the clock. Free WiFi was a big plus. Beds were comfy. Hot beverages were available for free around the clock at the reception. In a nutshell: if your priorities are the location, a welcoming smile, a clean room, local atmosphere and not the frills and the luxuries, then Bijou is a decent choice that won't easily disappoint you.
