This was a mid-week deal for two persons on offer at the hotel. We quite like Southport, so we jumped at the deal. The deal included a double bed - a rare occurance, normally we experience two singles pushed together. Reception was good. Polite and efficient. First question was our car registration number - which entitled one to a discounted £3/day charge. A strange request, but no doubt necessary, owing to the high demand for parking around the town centre. Parking is tight at times, but considering, also, the fact that the hotel was built mid-19th century, the need for car space in those days may not have been a priority. I rate the en-suite room as being good. It is an old rambling hotel (originally two hotels), so if two rooms are required for a party, then be prepared to walk, but there are two good lifts at either ends of the hotel. The deal included a three course meal on the first night - a good waiter service and a good meal. Wine is available at a hotel price, as is tap water at zero cost. The second night's meal is chargeable but there are also also plenty of neighbouring eating establishments around to suit most tastes. Breakfast is again very good, buffet style, well cooked and ample. Most guests refer to the decor as being ripe for improvement, but, personally, I somehow praise Great Western for upholding such an old, creaking building and providing such good value for the general public and not just for the well-healed few. The other facilities, such as the Spa service and the indoor pool, we viewed at a distance, but did not partake. At least they are available, should there be a need. Our room included an open aspect at the back of the hotel. Our single other party member enjoyed the same facilities, but a brick-wall view instead ( same price, unfortunately) . Picking the right room for you is a cunning art, it would seem. Collapse

I am sure in its day this was a great hotel. But not now. Much of the decor is badly needing upgraded. The breakfast was below average. and our visit to the spa area was an eye opener. not clean, and badly in need of refurbishment.

Stayed here on a 2 night break meeting up with friends. 5 stars to the reception staff who were all very welcoming, cheerful and efficient. There is a car parking charge of £3 per day but I think that is very good. The hotel is in a very good location being near shops, and also on the promenade. We had a superior room overlooking the sea front and it was very good. Bed a bit harder than I would like but that's a personal choice. The restaurant staff are only deserving of a 3 star and that is being generous. Abysmally slow service with never a smile. Nobody came to ask if we wanted more drinks even though the glasses had been empty for quite a while. Our first course came after a wait of approx. 40 minutes and that was only after asking when we could expect our starter as people had arrived after us and were already on their second course. Definitely wouldn't eat there again although to be fair the food was fine. Also the waitress dealing with drinks did rectify the problem by giving us a free drink. The staff in the conservatory were completely different. Simon greeted us with a smile and a bit of banter and was very efficient Can't understand why the bar closes at 10 o'clock though as it is far more comfortable than the other bar. There are leisure facilities which looked very nice although we didn't have time to use them. Everywhere in the hotel was very clean. Would we go back - possibly although wouldn't use their restaurant unless the staff were given some serious hospitality training. Collapse

I was born in Southport and always stay at this hotel when I visit relatives. I should start by saying I have no problem with the staff or the cleanliness of the hotel. I have always found both to be excellent. When you pay £100 a night for a hotel it is not unreasonable to expect a nights sleep. I would strongly recommend that you do not stay on a Saturday night but choose somewhere else. The same night we stayed there was a wedding. I am not a kill joy but its no fun when the corridor is like a Saturday night out on Lord Street, in fact town centre was probably quieter than outside my bedroom door. Guests were screaming, singing and shouting up and down the corridor until the early hours with no regard for anyone else. Luckily my elderly mother is deaf so she managed to sleep but I was not as fortunate. I think the hotel should tell guests there is a wedding and at least then you have a choice whether to stay there or not. I for one will never stay there again at a weekend. Collapse
