Stayed for 2 nights for a conference. Very impressive building from the outside, on the inside you can see that there is ongoing renovation works. Staff at reception were friendly and helpful. My room had 2 single beds with an entrance hall to the bedroom and bathroom. Ample storage, very clean. I think I had one of the renovated rooms, spotless. I didn't have a particular good view but, didn't need one. Ate in the restaurant 1st night, good meal, smallish portions. The bar prices were as you would expect for a hotel ie overpriced. They could have done with more staff as there was our conference and 2 weddings staying. Breakfast was the normal cooked buffet kept warm under heat lights. Just what was needed, very eatable. In fact all the meals we had were ok no complaints. When we were leaving the reception booked us a taxi without a problem. Overall a really enjoyable stay, didn't get round to trying the Spa. Just got back from a two night stay at this hotel. It is true that the hotel is showing its age but some Improvements are taking place. After check in we went to our room and it was horrible with a truly awful view ,most depressing. I asked at reception if we would be able to change to a better room only to be told no we could not as the hotel was full. After making it clear that I did not want to stay in the room I was given I was told that a room was available at a supplement. The person on reception who is a supervisor was most unhelpful and seemed unhappy in her role not what you expect from front of house staff. That said everyone else at this hotel works extremely hard are polite and will do their best to make sure you, have an enjoyable experience. Thank you to Abby on reception your supervisor needs a few lessons on customer service from you. This hotel needs lots of investment to bring it into line with what people expect. So yes I would stay there again but only because I know what to,expect. Collapse
Thank goodness it was only one-night stop

As they had ‘phoned me at home the night before I arrived, to check if I was planning to eat in their restaurant, I should have known this was not going to end well. Pull up outside and you sense that this might be a place of traditional charm and elegance. Step into the reception area (be careful not to trip on the badly-fitted carpets) and the illusion is shattered. Almost every wall shows signs of scuffs, scratches and assorted damage, wallpaper is peeling off and every skirting and door frame has been overpainted multiple times without proper preparation. All the carpets are shabby and the furniture is grimly hanging onto life. Special mention belongs to the ill-fitting and yellow-stained polystyrene tiles on many of the ceilings – a reminder of my childhood in the 1960’s when, no doubt, these tiles were originally fitted. Optimistic about a nice view of the coast from my dusty, tiny room I was met with a view of a filthy fan extractor between two brick walls, and its accompanying noise and smell. The filthy sliding window had to stay shut all night. From the bed I could see lines between every sheet of faded wallpaper, and patches of paper that had been stuck on to hide holes in the wall. Maybe some TV will distract me? The TV set was a very basic model with only Freeview stations to watch, and of course, the TV remote did not work. Interesting that I was in room 101 – the irony will be lost on a younger generation. An hour in the gym released some tension, although 3 of the machines were out of service, and there was no air conditioning or sound system. Breakfast must be better? Well, the food was ok, but the buffet presentation area was far too small and the dining tables were too close together so there was a lot of “excuse-me’s” going around. I could not wait to get out of the claustrophobia Oh dear, what a dreadful experience. It should not be forgotten that this hotel is part of the $6 Billion Best Western Hotel Group, not a struggling family-owned concern. Frankly, this hotel is a disgrace to carry that name. Collapse

Scuffed paintwork and badly touched up walls epitomise this once grand hotel that has clearly seen much better days. Greeted on check-in by a grumpy indifferent receptionist, who proceeded to put me in a tiny room as far away from the main hotel activities as possible; never mind overlooking sewage pipes at the back of the hotel - why no sea view room? Trying to get a glass of wine from the schoolboy barman, he was more interested in making sure I had “available credit” than serving me. When I asked if they were still serving bar snacks, he said they had “peanuts”. Mediocre breakfast and evening meal rounded off an entirely forgettable experience........ Collapse

Entering this building I was expecting Miss Marple to pop up. This is a large hotel that has seen better days. The lift didn't work and the decor has taken a beating. However, the management and staff are extremely accommodating. We had a reunion in which they gave us the entire conservatory with our own bar for two nights. Some of us stayed over, and they reopened the conservatory and arranged a Carvery style 3 course meal for a third evening. Lynette worked very hard and ensured we had a good time with top service.
