I stayed for two nights on a coach tour the hotel is in an excellent position it is old and maybe some areas are in need of refurbishment but our room was clean and roomy Unfortunately we were on the back of the hotel so didn't get a nice promenade view but we had clean bedding, nice fluffy white towels and hot water the staff were very pleasant and both the buffet breakfast and evening meals were very good with a nice choice of food. When you see the hotel from the outside you get the impression that the hotel will be very pleasant inside but things aren't what they appear. We went on a coach holiday and on arrival had to wait over 1 hour for the room to be cleaned and made ready for habitation. When we finally got into the room our expectations soon fell down the pan it reminded us of a caravette we used own but soon got rid of when we spent a few nights in it. Moving around inside was a work of art and involved complete co-ordination between the two of us. The room was exactly the same ie no room to pass each other. At the foot of the bed there was perhaps 0.9m to the outside wall but in this space there was a round table and two armchairs which not only obstructed the walkway but made it impossible to open one of the wardrobe doors so this had to be moved out of the way (really wanted to throw them out of the window but fought back the urge). With the armchairs moved it was still a work of art to get to the team making facilities. Looking closer at the room we could not understand why we had to wait because it was evident that that cleaning had gone by the board. The dust on the trouser press was really thick so my wife wrote "clean me" in the dust this was on the Monday and it remained until Thursday when the maid came whilst we were still in the room so she gave it a slightly better clean and even wiped some of the dust away. The bathroom was similar to the bedroom ie cracked wash basin, long black hairs on the floor for a few days. The toilet was situated with the toilet roll impossible to reach unless sitting sidesaddle because it was behind your back. Someone had done a risk assessment with the towel heater rails because when sitting on the toilet your legs are in contact with it so it was covered with pipe lagging covered with foil. The meals were nothing special. The only positive point I have for this hotel is the extremely efficient barman Alex who knew exactly what your order was and he was extremely courteous and we'll turned out. Would we stay there again - NO. Collapse

We stayed at the Royal Clifton Hotel for a conference in May 2017. It is a beautiful building but sadly very tired inside and could really do with some money spending on it. It is in a lovely location overlooking King's gardens and just around the corner from the centre of town. There is limited parking immediately in front of the hotel but plenty of on-road parking along the edge of the gardens. The décor is very drab although reception was teaming when we arrived as they were setting up for a wedding. It is a traditional Victorian seaside hotel, long and narrow, but is in need of refurbishment. We were in a large sea front room on the second floor but the lift at our end of the building was not working and the stairs were typically steep and narrow. We had fantastic views but that alone was not sufficient to justify the price. The room was very sparsely furnished and felt empty and the bathroom was extremely dated. In addition the landing was in grave need of maintenance, there were holes in the walls, stains on the carpet and a door frame actually hanging off next to our room. I was looking forward to some sight-seeing on the Sunday but was unfortunately struck down with a sickness bug meaning that I was hotel bound for the day whilst my husband worked. I couldn’t face the busy reception lounge full of hungover wedding guests and found a quiet spot at the far end of the hotel. In the end I resorted a lounger next to the pool where I could doze in peace. The leisure club is also very dated but it was good to have that facility. It is a terrible shame that such a grand old hotel has fallen into such a state of disrepair. Had it been maintained properly it would still be a fantastic retreat but as it is I would not recommend it. Please spend some money on it Best Western! Collapse
