Ok, it's not perfect but you get what you pay for. Far more personality than the usual cheap chains in the centre of Portsmouth, but with a fabulous location opposite the beachfront and the pier at Southsea. Stayed on a fully booked Saturday night in a twin room. The beds aren't the most luxurious in the world, but did the job. We had a room that faced the back of the hotel but was nice and quiet. Biggest issue really was that the rooms were very hot at night. Reasonably varied breakfast, but very busy in the 9am to 10am slot on the Sunday morning, but that was to be expected. Had assumed there would not be parking, so parked on the seafront. Free in the evening, but have to put money in from 8am. All in all a lovely stay and would visit again. Collapse

it was the HMS St Vincent AGM on the Saturday, I didn't go to the AGM, I went shopping at Southsea, something I had to get. back to the Hotel for 4.30, and at 6.30 we had up spirits. for anyone naval reading this , that means a tot of rum. the sailors used to get this until the early 60's. the men dressed up in old fashioned rig of the day the bosun pipes were blown. afterwards we all went for Dinner, it was a set meal. very nice. On the Sunday it was a church service in the dockyard church, we went by coach, they laid up the old flags, and were presented with new. they were blessed. then the coach took us back to the Hotel, but those who wanted to were dropped off in the Dockyard for a look around. 7pm evening meal , once again excellent. I would like to stay there again, in fact I am going to , nearer Christmas. the staff were very friendly. Collapse

We booked a night at this Best Western Hotel using Reward points and we felt it was a waste of points. On arrival the complementary parking was very tight at the rear of the establishment. When we found reception our booking in was quick but there was no acknowledgement that I was a Rewards member. The room allocated was clean and satisfactory with a sea view however the whole hotel needs an up-date to bring it into the 21st century from the 1980. We decided to have our evening meal at the hotel and what a disappointment it was. I ordered Veal and it was the worst meal I have had in a decade. The meat was inedible, tough and unpleasant to taste. However the very expensive cheese board was tasty. There were three waiters on duty, two who were new and under instruction and supervision - hopefully after intensive training they might have some idea of what being a waiter entails. When we spoke to the duty manager - Sandy White - she in a very professional manner sorted out our invoice for the meal to both our satisfactions. Will we be returning guests at this hotel? - No Collapse

We stayed for 3 nights dinner, bed & breakfast, paying a little extra for a sea view room which we couldn't fault except that my wife's personal pet hate is hairdryers fixed to the wall, & the quilt was too heavy & too hot for both of us. As some others mentioned there were problems with the key cards to get into the room, but the staff gave us some extra. All the staff from reception to the dining room were excellent. The only reason we have marked it 4 & not 5 is because of the evening meal, the breakfast was typical self service & was fine. The a la carte menu, did not alter whilst we were there, but there was an alternative of a hot buffet, which you could mix with the a la carte. Like most hotels they did cater for coach parties & whilst this was not a problem we imagine that they were all on the buffet. The starters were nice although the lettuce did look a bit tired, but the main problem came with the school dinner type food, the quality was fine & I could not fault the mushroom stroganoff, but the roast meat was sliced by the chef into thick wedges with no stuffing to accompany the pork or turkey. On the last evening there was cauliflower cheese as one of the vegetables but unfortunately it was spoilt by the fact that the cauliflower had been left in large pieces about a 1/4 of a whole cauliflower. Couldn't fault the desserts. May be a thought to make a smaller a la carte menu & change it a bit more often, which many hotels do. Having said all that we have already decided to go back next year. We left the car on the car park & walked into Portsmouth both days, with Southsea shops being about 10mins walk away. Collapse
