Think my first visit was in 2013 and I reviewed this hotel then. We visited again in 2014. Sadly my husband passed away weeks after our lovely holiday. I returned on my own in 2015, my family didn't want me to come on my own. But I came and I wasn't lonely , I felt I was visiting old friends. We had always wanted to bring my Grandson, so in 2016 I did just that. Like me he loved the hotel and everything it had to offer, great rooms, great food and great staff. Lovely park next to the hotel, good transport links and lots for a family to do in the surrounding area. I came back again this year and felt like I was coming home. The standards in this hotel are very high and the staff can't do enough to help.I've noticed the hotel continues to upgrade the decore around the hotel during each visit I've made. It's a large hotel, so it's an on going project. I have just returned again with my Daughter, only weeks after my last visit. My husbands sister has passed away, so I needed to return for the funeral. I never dreamt of staying anywhere else and the young man I spoke to did his up most best to accommadate us. I only needed three nights, but its holiday season and there was a wedding booked. This young man was great and got us a room for one night and then change over for the other two nights. The first room a very spacious Triple room and with sea views, lovely comfortable room. In the morning we had a beautiful breakfast before setting off for the funeral. The Lady in charge of the rooms told us to leave our cases and they would be in our new room when we returned. And so it was . We returned to a beautiful Twin room with large Bay window and sea views. We sat in the window and had a cup of tea with a biscuit. Evening Dinner was in another room due to the wedding in the large Resturaunt. The standards still the same and wonderful food. A good nights sleep and breakfast before we set off . I've stayed in several Best Western hotels over this past year ,one in Blackpool, The Blunsdon in Swindon and The Royal Clifton in Southport. The Royal Beach wins hands down for high standards, lovely helpful staff and beautiful food. As we left on the Saturday morning, my Daughter turned to me and said ," Mum , I can understand why you keep coming back here." And I said " yes I will definately continue coming back. " Collapse

I'd like to start my review by saying that if you are disabled and a wheelchair user then don't book at this hotel!! When we booked this hotel we were told that it was fully accessible but when we arrived I was told that I needed to use the back entrance oh and by the way there are workmen coming in and out of said entrance so be careful. When I finally got into the hotel it was like i'd stepped back in time everything was very dated. When we got to our rooms I was happy to find that they had listened to my request of a wet room. The room didn't look like it had had a full clean - dust on cupboards etc. The staff were ok but they didn't really get my issue with the entrance situation. One day I was in my room when housekeeping came round to do my room and saw that the cleaner sprayed her polish once and use the same cloth for the bathroom. She didn't move anything just worked around things. The coffee cups she rinsed in the bathroom sink and then put them back on the tray. This hotel really needs to be brought into the 21st century and have a major overhaul - lick of paint wouldn't go a miss!! Collapse

My son booked 2 double rooms as a birthday treat for his father. After a 5 hour journey to get there we were told only 1 room was booked and no rooms were available they were fully booked. This is despite a recent email confirming 2 double rooms booked. It was eventually sorted but not a good start ! Rooms were very clean. Only wish hot chocolate was provided in the room and also bubble bath. Toiletries were by dispensers attached to the wall. Tv channels limited. Breakfast was very good and the staff on duty were excellent efficient and very polite. Woken up at 5am on Saturday morning by alarm going off in the pier. Also woken up by inconsiderate wedding guests very early Sunday morning - shouting, trying to get into our room eventually getting the night porter to let them in their own room. Appreciate not the hotels fault but have found weddings in hotels tend to be very noisy so be aware. Overall good hotel bit dated but very clean. Quickest checkout have ever had. Collapse
Nice hotel that still keeps its period character!

Recently stayed here for 3 nights, and found this to be a charming hotel that reminded me of childhood seaside holidays. The Best Western Royal Beach has managed to strike the perfect balance of an old character hotel that fits the modern era. Naturally it appeals to many older / elderly guests, and larger parties / families, but at the same time its not old fashioned. My room, although a single, was fairly large and included a small double bed which was perfect. The room was extremely comfortable, and included coffee / tea making facilities & biscuits. The bathroom facilities were adequate, with toiletries included, and the towels were soft and heavy quality. The staff were very polite, helpful and professional, and the staff at breakfast were smart, and of a good standard. The hotel has kept standards high, and did the little things right, which is a rarity nowadays! Breakfast was lovely, plenty of choice of cereals, fruit juices, fresh fruit, croissants, and a pot of coffee or tea brought fresh to your table.. The cooked breakfast was lovely, with a full choice that would fill a plate twice, let alone once! You can walk to Gunwharf Quays in around 30 minutes, along the sea wall which was a pleasant walk. Overall, this is a great hotel to stay in if you want to be in a quieter but scenic part of Portsmouth. I would happily stay here again. Collapse
