This was once, obviously, a wonderful hotel but attention to detail, unfortunately, has now fallen by the wayside. Our first room on the second, annexed floor, via the lift then up a short precipitous flight of stairs was very small with little room to put our baggage. It had been decorated nicely but not completed as the woodwork on the door and window sills hadn't been done. It had lovely UPVC sash windows but unfortunately the view from them was of a rusty old fire escape. We found the bed extremely soft and requested a different mattress or room, but were told that the hotel was fully booked. Neither my partner, nor I, slept that night as we were so uncomfortable. After being shown five alternative rooms, the following morning, we found one, although lacking a telephone, that had a wonderfully comfortable bed. That was where we spent our second night. I'd like to thank the lady on reception who took the trouble to show us so much concern and changed our accommodation. We found the food was nicely presented and the staff friendly but overworked. Because of a wedding being catered for, the bar never seemed to have anyone behind it. Craiglands is positioned in a wonderfully strategic spot for walking on the moors or down into the town centre and because of this and the conscientious staff, we would stay again. Collapse

Craiglands Hotel has all of the potential to become a great hotel. Steeped in history, beautiful views, the wonderful town of Ilkley within easy walking distance........but sadly it is just the staff working here that are holding it together. The building is tired and the bedrooms need updating with a thorough overhaul. The room we had (206) was pretty poor. The white wardrobe was dirty and the knobs were falling off. The room lacked plug sockets. The heating could not be controlled, if you wanted the room to be cooler the window had to stay open (which being November and raining, it was not ideal). We noted the bar area and gave it a miss as it looked uninspiring and lacked any local draught beers/ales. We did not have lunch or dinner at the hotel so cannot comment but I would say that during the three days at the hotel we only saw one couple eating during the evening. My goodness, they have a captive audience and a real opportunity to make the restaurant a bit special which does not seem to have been taken advantage of. The breakfast at the weekend is buffet style (English & Continental) so you could help yourself to whatever you wanted. The produce used was not particularly good and yet again looked like it came from the local cash and carry. Mushrooms looked like they came from a tin.....seriously that is not good. During the week the breakfast is waitress service. You are served with the items you have requested and the portions are small. Half a small slice of black pudding, small ramekin of baked beans, tinned mushrooms, overcooked sausage, watery scrambled eggs, half an overcooked tomato. Only decent item was the poached egg. The package we had was a 'winter sale' which included breakfast. If we had to pay for it (which I believe is £10/£12) I think we would have given it a miss after one day and eaten brunch later in the town. The staff are lovely and helpful and I sincerely hope the hotel 'pulls it socks up' as it could be really great. Just one other thing.....when we checked in we were advised that £50.00 would be taken from our card each day to cover any extras that may be ordered during our stay - we had never heard of this before and advised we would not be happy with this and if we wanted anything would pay for it there and then. What an odd request Collapse

Arrived at the hotel at 4pm, signage to the car park very poor, I was fortunate it was still light, It would have been difficult to find the car park in the dark. Check in and the public areas were fine. My room was on the 1st floor, through a white door off the landing. I opened this door and the cold hit me. The radiator in the bedroom was Luke warm, the towel rail in the bathroom wasn’t working. I called reception to ask for an additional heater and was told the heating is on a timer, they agreed to bring a heater, it didn’t arrive. I went for Dinner and back to the room, it was still freezing, so cold I hardly slept, I had to use my coat on top of the duvet. I tried the shower next morning the water was luke warm, so I was unable to have a shower. Breakfast was poor, cheap ingredients, I was surprised to get only 1 rasher of bacon, had I paid for the breakfast it would have been £12.50. The staff are the saving grace of this hotel, all very friendly. I guess they didn’t have an extra heater on the premises, Collapse

An overall very disappointing experience. Bathroom was hugely dated - shower head wouldn't point downwards and couldn't be adjusted, the water from the shower was tepid (barely warm) for both nights we stayed, despite being on the highest temperature setting. There was a shower curtain, which I can't emphasis enough how disgusting and unhygienic I find this. The duvet was lumpy and thin, and the pillows were cheap & flat - with no spare pillows or blankets in the wardrobe. There was no temperature control in the room, so we couldn't adjust the heating, nor did the bathroom radiator work, so we were freezing during the night. We had breakfast on the first morning to try it out - glad we hadn't booked in for a second, because it isn't worth the £10 per head fee. The waitress was highly unorganised and inefficient. She said she 'didn't think they offered hot chocolate' even though it was on the menu - and she didn't even go and check, so I didn't have a hot drink. She returned because she forgot my husband's drink order (one order), and had trouble comprehending our breakfast order of 2 full English breakfasts. The breakfast was inedible and used cheaply bought products. Not what I would expect. There are only two options - the full English, and continental. The English breakfast was underwhelming, and I couldn't eat any of it - watery, colourless scrambled eggs that looked as though they had been mashed, one fatty sausage, one tough overcooked rasher of bacon, watery baked beans, and half a piece of dry black pudding. We found the continental selection of food equally poor and disappointing as well. I would expect fresh locally sourced eggs, fresh orange juice not from concentrate, a large selection of warm pastries, local/butcher's sausages etc, glass jugs of chilled juices and water... Instead the milk jug spout was going green, and everything just felt like it had been cost-cut/ grabbed from a the basics aisle in Tesco in some trolley-dash in an attempt to purchase a morning's worth of breakfast for less than a fiver. Additionally, other hotel guests arrived for breakfast still wearing pyjamas and with bare feet which I found highly inappropriate and off-putting, In all a disappointing experience - cold room, cold shower, and a sad-looking, overcooked breakfast. Please check the arrangements for your events very carefully before the event because this hotel believes it is perfectly acceptable to change what you have booked and paid for if it so chooses. Communication between those taking the booking and those providing the service on the day is poor. Staff at the event lacked basic customer service skills and provided a below average service. Having expressed our disappointment at the changed arrangements with the Events Co-ordinator. The response we received was pathetic and laughable. Will be going elsewhere for the next family gathering. Collapse
