We chose this hotel for a family birthday meal and stay after reading good reviews on here and were particularly looking forward to a swim and dinner. On arrival their wedding planner was covering reception. She was friendly, chatty and super helpful, including moving one of our rooms from the top floor (do not stay on the top floor if you are over 6ft, the beams are really low). The rooms were spacious and spotlessly clean. The bed was incredibly comfortable and the bathroom towels were large and good quality. Iron in the room was useful and we appreciated the toiletries on offer. We spent a few hours in the spa area. All the staff were friendly and the facilities clean. Was great having the coded lockers in the ladies changing room. We were lucky to find a cancellation for the spa the next morning and we both thoroughly enjoyed our facials. Dinner was where things went wrong... We booked a table in the restaurant, and was expecting exceptional food given the reviews, awards and price. The staff member behind the bar didn’t seem to know much about the wine on offer but was friendly and polite. Our waitress at dinner was lovely, bubbly and tried incredibly hard to serve an entire restaurant by herself despite having almost lost her voice. Unfortunately as a result of being totally understaffed, everything took forever and we had to ask for more drinks multiple times. Starters were ok, well presented. The freshly made bread rolls were delicious. The fish and the beef mains were well cooked and although they took a long time to come out after starters, you could tell they were freshly cooked. The venison was awful. 2 of us ordered it and both had to send it back the first time for being completely over cooked. The second time one plate was ok, but the other was like leather - again fully over cooked. At this point the manager stepped in to try and rescue the situation. Still had one mains missing. However, it was late and we thought that a cheese board would be a good idea to finish the meal as it didn’t involve any cooking - it still took 20 minutes to come. The manager was lovely and very apologetic, removing some items from our dinner bill. However if we are honest, our entire birthday dinner had been ruined. We slept well until the housekeeping staff started cleaning the rooms above us and the hoovering woke my partner up. I don’t think any individual person was to blame for the Fawlty Towers like experience we received. In fact many of them tried incredibly hard. Poor rota’ing? Staff illness? Poor training? Just bad luck on that day? Personally I don’t feel a restaurant with awards and that reputation should have opened if they weren’t able to provide their normal service. I don’t think anyone in there got anywhere near good enough standards that night. It is much easier to apologise for not opening for one night then it is trying to rescue a sinking ship. Thank you again to our waitress for trying so hard and to the manager for her care. Collapse

We booked two nights to break a trip. We thought the hotel was excellent. Cold weather, but warm room with controllable heating. I’d written on the booking form that “a room with a view would be good”, and our room overlooked the mill stream, wildlife and trees. Our first visit to the hotel, and my wife thought one of the receptionists (Ellie, I think) was particularly helpful. The spa and swimming pool were really nice. My wife had booked a massage which she said was “the best ever”. It’s good to find a hotel with real ale, and the Adnams ghost ship was excellent (I kept trying it to check!). Really good breakfast. Memorable eggs benedict. We had dinner in the hotel restaurant on one evening, and enjoyed our meal although the choice wasn’t huge. Reasonable value meal. Hotel receptionist organised a taxi into Cambridge for us, and accurately predicted the cost (£16). The hotel is built around an old water mill, and I think some rooms are modern buildings outside the old mill building. Our room was in the old building, and was plenty big enough and comfortable. Big bathroom with excellent shower. One thing to be aware of is that there is no lift, and the stairs are narrow and quite steep. Plenty of car parking space. Would I go again? Yes, but I thought it was quite expensive for B&B. Collapse

Having been a disorganised family, I was left to book a place for Sunday lunch on mothering Sunday. My first thought was QM as it is a nice location and I had heard the food was good. I called the staff were very helpful during booking, I was worried about the meal only being offered as a carvery. I need not have worried, the 3 courses on offer were excellent. With attentive staff on hard to serve or explain the choices. The food was regularly refreshed and of a impressive quality. Finishing the meal with a coffee was good and included in the price, and in addition the hotel presented each mother with some flowers (a nice gesture). We shall return. Collapse

We had an afternoon tea party in the Orangery room. As the leader of the group I was quickly identified by staff when i arrived and our host Kayleigh, took control providing all the information we needed. We felt the staff were always one step ahead and made the afternoon very easy. Food reasonably good but plentiful. Evening bar meals were a very good size , comfortable atmosphere. Good breakfast with large menu of plated options. Collapse

Found the staff very friendly and helpful, room was very comfortable with everything we needed - (we paid extra for a superior room) - loved the lunch we had in the bar on arrival and also enjoyed breakfast, the dinner was a huge disappointment, if we come here again we will have our dinner in the bar - less pretentious menu - I don't think the kitchen is up to the restaurant menu.
