We spent one night on our way to the Highlands.Easy to find in the centre of this small town with parking. Welcoming reception and a good sized room with all the fittings such as hairdryer, iron and board, hangers and bedside lights. And two lots of biscuits and free unlimited internet access.. Good sized table and wardrobe. Very comfortable bed and good bathroom. One and a half acres of lawned garden to wander about in behind the hotel - a pleasant surprise. we ate at an Italian restaurant nearby but had breakfast in the hotel. A bit expensive but full menu and plenty and varied fruit, cereals and a full cooked breakfast. Friendly staff I would recommend this hotel as a comfortable and reasonably priced stopover. Much better than the Travelodges we also stayed at to and from Scotland as Best Westerns in the area fully booked. Collapse

We visit Moffat about three times a year. Whenever we stay or visit we always have a meal in this hotel as there is a favourite mains that it has had on their menu for at least the last 12 years. It is the steak and broughton ale pie which is actually a dish filled with quality steak in a very rich sauce and a puff pastry lid at least one inch high which so light to the touch with crispy golden chips and veg. A visit to Moffat always has to include this wonderful dish. When we arrived, we went directly to the Adam lounge to order this. Unfortunately, the name had changed to steak and McAndrews pie which should have given us a clue. When it arrived it looked the same apart from a thinner and not so well risen puff pastry lid. The meat was still of good quality and the sauce good but not nearly as tender as before when it previously fell apart. To make matters worse, it came with chips that were dark brown in colour, were soft and a bit greasy. The vegetables had also changed and consisted of lots of stringy cabbage, undercooked broccoli, peas, carrot and turnip all very dry. In fact, it looked like vegetables ready to be stir fried. Very disappointing considering how much we had been looking forward to it and the fact it was always the most popular dish with visitors and locals. We then checked in at Reception and got a very warm welcome from Zoe who also looked after us so very well during our stay. We also made a booking for dinner. Our room was very nice, overlooking the gardens and quiet. The bathroom had obviously been recently refurbished to a high standard at considerable cost with a modern design. The mirror above the hand basin was unusual and had two strip type lights built into the glass, very effective and the shower unit was also of a very modern design. The downside to this was there were no grab rails either on the bath or the wall. There had been soap dishes on either side of the shower at one time but had been removed and the holes filled in. So, the only place to put anything was at the other end of the bath which involved much turning around. Bearing in mind that this hotel is used a lot by mature adults, it was awkward to get in and out as well. When we went down to dinner, we found out that the bar menu was also the dinner menu. It seems that there will only be separate menus at the start of the summer season ( within the following two weeks). We tried to order the seafood chowder for mains but was told it was off as it had been so popular. We do not eat pork or lamb and a client at the next table had just complained that the the chicken dish was too dry. Therefore, for mains we decided to try the steak and ale pie again in the hope that the earlier one was just "one of those errors that happens". It was not! Just the same as last time. We had ordered a bottle of Australian Shiraz to go with this, let us just say we did not finish the bottle. The best part of the meal was the smoked duck pate which was delicious and well presented. We signed the bill at that stage and left. In contrast to this, the breakfast menu was really extensive and first class and we always enjoyed the very wide choice of waitress service dishes. The lady who looked after us , Marianne was lovely, so cheerful, helpful and gave excellent service. Thank you Marianne! The following evening we tried to order the seafood chowder but was told that the chef had removed it from the menu. So, we ate in the bar and tried the fish and chips. The fish was excellent, really fresh and in a crisp batter. Once again, dark brown chips , not all crisp and not very nice. We have since found out that the chef we had for so long had left and gone elsewhere. For our last dinner, we ate out at another hotel. This hotel has always been our favourite place to eat and we always praised it to all our friends and was always an essential stopping off point when going further North, or on the return journey. Moffat House has so much going for it. It is a very nice hotel, with lovely warm friendly staff. What a pity about dinners. One other point, the wifi is free and is very good. Collapse

This hotel offers excellent customer service. All of the staff are polite, helpful and friendly and create a warm relaxed environment. The food is superb, we had breakfast and dinner in the bar as we had a dog with us but could still order from the main menu and we were well looked after. The hotel aim to use as much local produce as possible and our meals were delicious and well presented. We stayed here twice en route to and from Inverness and can recommend the Scottish breakfast, steak pie, fish and chips and spinach and ricotta ravioli. The rooms are spotlessly clean and have free wifi. We were in room 6 on our return visit which was very spacious and also had bathrobes and a view of the lovely garden. The outside of the hotel looks a little tired and in need of a coat of paint but this wasn't important to our stay. Collapse
