If I had known what I'd be in for I'd have stayed at the travel lodge down the road! My mother in law , my partner and myself stayed for 2 days for a wedding costing us £600 for both rooms. Once we got into the rooms we were not pleased! I understand it's an old historic hotel but the decor and furnishings were grubby. There was dust everywhere and our bed had hairs and stains in! We rang down to reception to get someone up to change the bedding once he arrived he asked me to point out every stain and then simply said "right ok" and got all the bedding and walked out without even an apology ( this was the manager!) about 30 minutes later 2 ladies came back with fresh sheets. Later on while looking through the book about the hotel and wifi codes etc I noticed page 7 was missing (wifi page) due to not having any phone service I needed it, I rang reception and explained to them, she then said to me " oh right and what you need it" absolutely disgusted with her response and attitude I hung up. The next day we attended the wedding we had stayed here for and was blown away with how amazing it was ( that was the only good thing about the hotel). The morning after we went down for breakfast and once again was greeted by a rude staff member. We went in and said our room number then spotted the groom to which we said to the staff member we will be 2 minutes while we speak to him, the woman then started walking away and shouted at us saying if you like to follow me to which we said ok be with you in a second ..... she then shouted at us again! This was the last time we got the see the groom as he had to go on his honeymoon and we had to travel 5 hours home straight after and she completely ruined our good byes and congratulations! Never been more annoyed. After this when we sat down we had terrible service not offering us tea or coffee or toast and had to ask a different woman for it. Then at 5 to 10 they started taking away all the juices and food even though we had not finished. I'd strongly recommend this place for weddings but not for staying! Collapse
Three night stay.

Having booked & paid for a classic room back in January of this year, on arriving at our room we found it small for a double room the views being of only roves & walls. We went back to reception and complained, we were informed that the only other room available was over a function room &that this was likely to be noisy as there were weddings taking place on Saturday & Sunday. We turned that room down due to this problem. After a short while we were offered the Charron apartment which we accepted. Which was a large two bedroom, kitchen/dinner & lounge in the roof with views. The stables where we dinned each evening was excellent and all the staff were very attentive & friendly. The beer was good to which was made in the on site micro brewery. A warm welcome awaited us every morning when we came down to breakfast where the cooked breakfast was made to order. All in all the time spent at the hotel was of a very high standard & the staff warm welcoming & friendly. Collapse
Not at all impressed

We chose a classic room at this hotel, on a half board basis for two days. Being an asthmatic I require a window that lets in plenty of fresh air, as this room overlooked another building it was not possible to stay there, so another room was requested. The second room overlooked the car park so had a more open aspect. Yet once again the sash window had a device that prevented the window opening more than three or four inches, this resulted in a very uncomfortable night sucking on my inhalers. The bed? this was narrower than a standard double bed, the room being too small for any other. Only one chair plus a fold away canvas stool, again due to the room being so so small. The restaurant for dinner was outside and across a courtyard, even though breakfast was in a beautiful first floor restaurant. When our main course was served we sent it back to the kitchen due to being cold! After breakfast the next day we took a refund, for the second day, and left. Although this hotel carries a four star rating I fail to see how this was achieved. Collapse

Came here the night before we went to Beamish. Got a crazy good price for what appeared to be a very grand country manor. On arrival we were not disappointed- we were getting much more than what we paid for. Antique furniture, suits of armour, chandeliers and grandfather clocks. If Disney ever make a Haunted Mansion themed hotel it'd look like this. A little spooky but not overly. Our room was on the smaller side but had impressive antique furniture. Our alarm clock was a little noisy but I just unplugged it- sorted. And with it being an old building you tend to hear pipes and the building creaking but it was never a nuisance. Had a nice evening at The Stables restaurant- very picturesque sitting in the courtyard with a beer beforehand. Food took a while to come but when it did it was tasty. If you're going to Beamish and get a deal here for a good price (we paid £70 :O) I can't recommend enough. An older clientele but if you're going to Beamish you're not really expecting the 18-30s crowd! Collapse
pretty average for the price although the garden areas are lovely.

stayed at this hotel for a wedding - a room rate of £185 - the room was large in size but the furnishings were mediocre - the lamp table top was not fixed to the frame and moved off - thank heavens it was me and not a child as it was marble. The breakfast service - sunday - was pretty abysmal - i was shown in the direction of a table by a pointed finger, then i waited and waited - I then called over a waitress who was clearing a table and asked for coffee - she said someone would come and take my order - i waited a little while longer and in the end got up and got some toast - again I called a waitress over this time I explained no one had came and I would like some coffee as I would like to eat breakfast with the rest of the group - it eventually came. I have definitely seen many a better breakfast option/servery and think this let the hotel down. Collapse
