On first impressions of the reception area this might appear to be a fairly typical business hotel. The usual shiny surfaces, sturdy furniture and yellow metal features tell you this is a traditional hotel. I do recall reading somewhere that this hotel was built in the 30s although upon reading that I didn't maybe sense the unspoken warning - "Beware you are travelling back in time by coming here" In fact, for me, the time is the 1980s and the place is thawing Russia, with it's new tourism industry opening up to the world and the decayed hotels with their security guards. (There aren't any security guards here though.) Once out of the lobby there is a choice of concrete steps circling up to your floor or a 3 person lift straight out of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The breakfast room is on the first floor, I was on the second. The room doors have been changed and are a card sensor type which work well, although seem a little incongruous with the carpet tiles and spartan artwork adorning the walls - a mixture of styles I saw; from watercolours of an amateurish nature to a chart listing different types of chair styles over history. Inside the room was more of the strange - a room big enough for a double bed and yet was a single room. That said the single bed was a very generous size and very comfortable with good quality sheets and pillows. The size of the TV in the room was enormous, at least a 42 inch. However it also clearly replaced a smaller older one as the arm from the wall behind it was still there and this one was on a small flaky formica table that didn't seem to match the rest of the room furniture. The bedroom did seem pretty clean, although paintwork and general maintenance was poor: flaking paint on the ceiling, a door handle held in by a nail that was poking out, the light fittings were very antiquainted. Curtains would have been nice too, an opinion apparently once shared with the management since there were poles there. Sound insulation was very good, I didn't hear the main road outside or my neighbours or people in the hallway, I slept very well - although I must say I had just finished a 36 hour day. The bathroom was the piece de la resistance - seemingly untouched since the installation of those brown hairdryers so favoured by swimming pools which seem designed to mimic a chunky telephone - and smell funny when you turn them on. The fittings were all original and all worked - I like antiques so this didn't worry me, although I think if you are going to keep the art nouveau period alive best to keep the spirit alive too and keep things looking nouveau. The shower tray was very interesting - a cross between a baby bath, a foot bath and a shower tray. Had been painted to cover chips too, but at least that suggest there is a maintenance man/team. Breakfast was continental, but with less choice than in other hotels I have visited nearby and the ambience was again very dated and canteen like. To be fair the staff at the desk were very nice and professional, I didn't see any room staff and the lady doing breakfast was friendly too. Given the price I paid, €130, I would have expected more, yes it's close to the station but so are 20 other hotels, most of which have more to offer. I won't be choosing this one again I am afraid. Geneva has some beautiful hotels and they charge through the nose for them. Sadly it's 3 star hotels are often run down and in desperate need of an update! Unfortunately these hotels are also expensive for the product they provide...welcome to Geneva. If you come during a busy period you will pay big money for a very basic product and get very little for your money certainly compared to many other International destinations. The Bernina is no exception. So..on the positive front: 1. It is very convenient for the train station as it is directly opposite maybe only a 20 meter walk. 2. The staff, as is often the case in Geneva, are very helpful and friendly. 3. It has decent water pressure in the shower although tends to vary somewhat in temperature. 4. Very convenient to access the Lake and surrounded by bars and restaurants. 5. Pillows and bed linen of decent quality. The negative: 1. Rooms and hotel in desperate need of updating and refurbishment 2. Amenities basic at best... if you just want a bed for the night next to the train station and your expectations are low then this is the ideal place. 3. No soundproofing in the room you feel like you're sitting in a room with your neighboring bedrooms and can hear every word that is spoken. 4. A decent television but attached flat to the wall so impossible to actually watch from the bed and no ability to swivel it out. 5. No tea or Coffee making facilities in the bedroom there is a machine downstairs where the tea is free and you'll pay one Euro for the coffee. 6. No air conditioning just some very dated ventilator system in the window and a stand-alone fan 7. Very basic breakfast normal Continental fare and some hard boiled eggs, no options for any kind of a la carte choice It is time Geneva got off its high horse and updated its older hotels. You cannot call these hotels 3-star ...2 at Best and frankly for a place that claims to be the heart of the hotel and restaurant training world they should be ashamed of the failing and falling quality. Traveling all over the world I stay in many major cities and you get a hell of a lot more for your money and much better quality generally in other destinations. Come on Geneva step up and win back some integrity! Collapse

Location is extremely convenient, just opposite the train station. Room was quiet, but tiny and dark; bathroom without window nor ventilation. Basic breakfast. Reception staff polite and helpful. Possibility of leaving luggage after check-out.
