Just wanted to a change of scenery but not to be too far away from home, as we have a child, we opted for hatfield, because we wanted to shop, and see a movie, then have some food, fulfilled al the criteria, and we got some lovely weather that day, so were able to walk around. Rounded off our evening with a drink at the bar and sat outside. View of the car park wasnt fab, would have been lovely if it were an outside pool!!! But the hotel was very nice, contemporary with fantastic artwork from the local uni. Great staff. Collapse

We stayed one night and took advantage of the spring, dinner bed and breakfast offer, which is good value. Reception staff were very friendly on arrival. Our first room on the first floor was noisy from the kitchen vent outside so we asked to move and were given one overlooking the car park which was much quieter. The room was pleasant, comfy bed, iron, sparking water and tea/coffee tray with nice biscuits. Dinner in the Outsidein restaurant was very enjoyable, 3 courses, all good and very pleasant and attentive waitress. I was looking forward to a nice breakfast but found it rather disappointing. It was a help yourself buffet with a good selection of fruit, yogurt and pastries, however the cooked breakfast was luke warm and the bacon like leather. We had to make our own toast and the coffee and tea were in help yourself pots and rather stewed. The waiters, in total contrast to the waitress the night before, seemed indifferent. I had to clear our fruit plates from the table myself and when the staff did make an appearance they made no attempt to clear the rest of our plates, which left little room on the table. When we left the restaurant no one said thank you, or goodbye. I would suggest some more training is required! Breakfast aside, we had a pleasant stay and will probably return. Collapse
Would stay again

Our deal was Dinner Bed & Breakfast, first our room no 32 was noisy, the vent fan from the kitchen sent a humming sound through the room, it was easy to move across the corridor to room 33, very helpful staff. Our dinner was very tasty 3-course meal, waitress very friendly indeed, we slept well, down to Breakfast a bit of a disappointment, the waiters seemed totally uninterested in us, not clearing the table, nice fresh fruit, but the bacon, tomato, mushrooms where tepid, even after putting on a hot plate, fried egg that was ordered was served on a cold plate, coffee from the pot not as hot as it should be, after all its a 4 star hotel. We would stay again. Collapse

Pretty good - helpful staff - but a bit more attention to detail needed

I stayed over one night, arriving tired and hungry on a Sunday evening. The welcome was warm and friendly and the hotel decorated in beige wood with some truly horrible artwork on the walls. No matter. The double room was comfortable and the window actually opened. I do like a bit of fresh air in a hotel room. Tea and over nuanced biscuits were supplied (orange marmalade flavour with extra crunchy bits). I was disappointed to see no earl grey tea and only instant coffee. Ugh. Surely a good hotel can run to a cafetiere? There was, however a trouser press which doubled up as an ironing board so extra brownie points there. Wifi was free and I connected quickly and without fuss. Dinner was ok and the service friendly but a bit slapdash. I really dislike food served on slabs instead of proper plates. The homemade bread was nice, but roughly the size of a bandaged thumb and the chips were served in a silly mini frying basket. But no matter. The wine was decent and the glass large. The coffee was disgusting - weak and pointless. Even worse than Starbucks and that's saying something. In the restaurant they played dreadful Richard Clayderman tinkly piano music, presumably to enhance our experience as guests. It made me want to hurl a chair through the window. Why can't hotels play classical music?! Next morning, I noticed the lack of a magnified mirror in the bathroom. This is really annoying for female travellers. Also the toiletries were proper cheapo - a bit of shampoo and a shower gel along with a bit of cotton wool and a tiny nail file. It felt mean and penny pinchy. Breakfast was ok - a bit homogenised. The menu boasted of 'freshly squeezed orange juice' but it wasn't - it was the pasteurised or treated in some way but it definitely wasn't freshly squeezed. Later on I discovered that I had left my phone charger in the hotel and rang them up. The lady at reception found my charger and phoned me back within five minutes, so this was very good service and the reason why I added an extra circle to the rating. Collapse

Lots parking, modern although not that modern, shopping centre opposite. Meals depending on staff on night sometimes good, sometimes not so. rooms modern although compared to other hotels not that modern.
