Just wanted to a change of scenery but not to be too far away from home, as we have a child, we opted for hatfield, because we wanted to shop, and see a movie, then have some food, fulfilled al the criteria, and we got some lovely weather that day, so were able to walk around. Rounded off our evening with a drink at the bar and sat outside. View of the car park wasnt fab, would have been lovely if it were an outside pool!!! But the hotel was very nice, contemporary with fantastic artwork from the local uni. Great staff. Collapse

Having booked, though relatively quiet in the end, we lunched specifically to have the "turkey" lunch and the trimmings.Three courses was £24.95 and all three enjoyed the meal. Starters of smoked salmon tartlet and chicken and liver pate were very tasty whilst the plated turkey meal was very good, succulent, well cooked vegetables and plenty of gravy and we were not overfaced. Christmas puddings followed with sauce, again very tasty. Service was attentive without being fussy and overall we enjoyed a very pleasant lunch for around £110 including a Pinot Grigio and the tip. We did not use the hotel facilities so can only mark as average to be fair but when we have stayed overnight previously we wre found the rooms very comfortable. Collapse

My husbands company booked this venue for their company Xmas Party at the beginning of December. If it gets booked again next year, we won't be attending. The reasons: * Poorly laid out function room - all the tables were set out lengthways, which meant any party of more than 10 people couldn't converse at all with each other. The tables were so crammed together that it made it very difficult to even get up and walk down the other end of the table to talk to colleagues. Added to that the carpet was coming up alongside our table and was a bad trip hazard especially when the lights went out for the disco. The bar is small, and the other side of the very small and busy dancefloor. Only 2 bar staff - not adequate for the number of people in the room. Granted there is another bar elsewhere in the hotel but when you have tables of 30+ people, who wants to spend all night walking to and from another room? At the beginning of the evening there wasn't even the facility to pay by card at the bar which when you are trying to buy drinks for a table of 30 is very awkward. Thankfully the bar staff heeded the complaints and took possession of a card machine from reception for the rest of the evening. Tea and Coffee were provided after the meal but this was "help yourself" from a small table next to the bar - the wrong side of the dancefloor. Try navigating with 2 cups of hot liquid across a busy dancefloor, again ill thought out. ** The food and service - For £38 a head this was mediocre at best.I accept that mass catering isn't easy but the food was bland, lukewarm and unappetising. Despite everyone in the whole room having pre-ordered and name cards set out with each persons order on them, the food was served by option and not by table. This meant that, in reality, unless you wanted a cold meal, everyone on our table had to eat at different times, as one starter option was served to the whole room, followed by the next starter option and so on. This was the same for main meal and desert too. On our table most people had finished their main meal (turkey) before some were even served. At one point there were two of us left just sitting there waiting for fish to be brought out. We questioned the sullen waitress who promptly replied that there was no fish. When we pointed out that we had pre-ordered so there must be, she said she would check with the kitchen. We then spoke to a gentleman, who seemed to be more in charge and he told us the fish was on its way. We thought we'd entertain ourselves in the meantime by pulling the table crackers and sharing some jokes. Unfortunately, cheapness reigned again and all the crackers were exactly the same, so only one joke for 30 of us. The fish arrived a few minutes later but really wasn't worth the wait. If all you want from a office xmas do is somewhere warm, with drink and some party classics from the DJ to dance to then Beales will fulfill that need. If in addition to that you are hoping for a nice meal, good service in comfortable surroundings this isn't the place. Collapse

We attended one of the Christmas party nights in November. What can I say but a complete amateur experience. Waiters not knowing where to place food, who had ordered what. Food got cold whilst waiting for our whole table of 8 to be served. Portion sizes varied considerably. Guests on my table having items of food missing (carrots) after waiting far too long for it to arrive. Tables cluttered and not cleared, butter turning up half way through the starters. No mince pies or bread sauce. Running out of glasses. Drink prices extortionate. Coffee was served 1/3 to 1/2 cup full, not sugar even when asked for. Worst Christmas party experience. Very poor Suggestions:- Serve one table at the same time as happens at other nearby hotels Price drinks for the local area not London prices after all it is Hatfield! Replace the flooor where a hole is that the chair leg can enter.(accident waiting to happen) Dj more interaction with the guests - not leaving his post to a cd playing. Collapse
