Very poor dinner in the "fine dining" restaurant.

My friend and I are visiting for the Lit Fest and decided to treat ourselves to dinner in the beautifully located Bayview and booked a table for 8pm. The staff were initially very helpful and attentive. Our meal arrived promptly; scallops and tuna. Very small portions, with one of component parts looking more as though someone had forgotten to wash the place between using it and left a stain. It was equally hard to remove from the plate to eat it. The scallops were passable. The cauliflower puree was stingy, being hidden under one of the scallops - literally, hidden. The carrot jelly was nice. My friend's tuna was apparently OK, but a very small portion. Having looked at photos on trip advisor from other meals served here, it looks as though we were a little short changed. The mains, two fillet steaks with celeriac, rosti, portobello mushroom and spinach. Oh dear me! We asked for steaks on the rare side of medium rare ... both arrived with just a hint of pink surviving the long walk from the kitchen. Definitely not rare, medium rare but on the well done side of medium. And talk about tough as old boots? We couldn't cut through most of it and had to leave it. The mushroom was nice. The celariac wasn't cooked nearly enough and was very rubbery. I had to leave it. The spinach hadn't been washed and was gritty. The rosti was way over seasoned, was soggy and horribly salty. I'm not sure why we didn't send all back but we were really hungry by this point and when asked if everything was alright, we did complain, and left most of the meal untouched. I have never had a tough fillet steak, in fact I didn't know there was such a thing. To be fair we were presented with a complimentary cheese board to share, however no plates were forthcoming and had to ask for them. By this point the Maitre d' had completely disappeared. No-one came to top up our water or wine glasses throughout the meal. The cheese board consisted of supermarket biscuits with a few very tired slithers of cheese. No explanation of what they were from anyone and with all the beautiful cheese produced in Ireland it was a crying shame that this board looked as though someone had nipped down to the local convenience store and purchased a few special offer delights. When we asked for the bill, that is when we eventually found a member of staff to ask for the bill, we had to wait for ages for it to arrive. We had to ask for a second time. By this point we were the only people in the restaurant and still no sign of the Maitre d', waiting staff or anyone at all despite not being late in the evening. When we went to pay, we complained again the meal had been so dissapointing but was met with a lukewarm non committal response, without any attempt to salvage any ounce of respect for the hotel's "fine dining" reputation. Better to go down the road to Pier26 or the Blackbird if your hungry....this beautifully appointed hotel needs some staff training and a chef who has a palate and timer. Collapse

We stayed in the Bayview Sat & Sunday night -the location is stunning ! Right by the sea & a few minutes walk from pubs /walks /the pier. We were told booking the room that a sea view wasn't available however on check in the very obliging guy at reception located a sea view room for us ! The reception staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The breakfasts both mornings were top class - a generally lovely atmosphere in the hotel. We were told that the restaurant stopped serving at 8 despite the hotel guide in the rooms saying 9,but this was sorted immediately by the lovely lady who seemed to be the reception manager. The staff really are exceptionally good in the hotel which makes up for any hiccups ! The rooms are cosy but definitely need updating the decor is worn and dated with no wifi in the rooms and a big back tv with Poor signal. But in fairness the hotel is so nice in general that you would overlook this ... there are lovely communal sitting rooms on each floor with large windows overlooking the sea - these rooms are seriously in need of modernising as they could be absolutely stunning. The restaurant has lovely bay windows overlooking the sea only bit of feedback here would be the row of guest cars parked up directly outside the hotel hinder the sea view ! Overall I thoroughly recommend the Bayview - I travel a lot with work & stay in hotels at least once a week so have a lot to compare it to ! This hotel might need a bit of a facelift decor wise(they are comfortable and spotless might I add!)- but it's a beautifully located place with outstanding staff, good food a great atmosphere & breathtaking views ! I'll definitely be a return customer ! Collapse

My goodness, didn't really want to leave here, it was magical for us......... We weren't quite in the door when we were greeted by the lovely Maria and her colleague Eimear on reception who saw straight to checking us in and making us feel really at home.... A calm descended on us on reaching our room and we felt so relaxed amongst the neutral shades of chocolates and creams in the décor. The room was really warm and cozy at all times and really clean....Bed linen was of excellent quality similar to Egyptian cotton and the pillows were soft as duck down...... Bathroom was set with soft white towels and beautiful toiletries... We had a fabulous view of the Bay and Harbour and the location is very peaceful........... Food in the Bar was excellent, if your into steak medium rare, it arrives exactly that way and soo tasty...Extensive wine list available too, plenty of choice and price ranges... And as for breakfast, well what can I say, beautiful menu to choose from and its table service too, such a treat... I hope they post the menu so you can see for yourselves........ We are going back for sure.... The staff and hotel are so lovely... Grateful Thanks, Alice, Ireland.:) Collapse
