As this was a surprise it really was a surprise how lovely this hotel really is. On arrival on a really cold morning we were great by some lovely friendly staff in a warm foyer. We explained everything thing we needed to know for our stay in reasonably good English, then were taken too our room which was very nice. Our room had everything thing we needed including a large shower, dressing gowns and really large room, bed was comfy. The hotel has a restaurant , a bar a steam room and a sauna too. I would love to stay here again sometime soon. Collapse

Went to Lille to celebrate a Big birthday, not saying which one, suffice to say it ends with a 0! Anyway, first impressions were, oh no we’ve booked a hotel slap in the middle of a ring road! Then we realised our mistake, the hotel is actually right across the road from the Gare Eurolille if you exit from the Porte Rotterdam exit. The hotel is very nice, the check-in staff were friendly and the room was excellent. I had read some reviews about accessing the toilet through the shower which I didn’t understand at all. Actually the toilet and shower are separate cubicles in the en-suite bathroom. I believe some of the rooms have baths, but our room, 707, was just a shower, but very spacious with both a big drenching showerhead in the ceiling and a smaller one on the wall, perfect for a quick shower when you didn’t want to get your hair wet. The bathroom was very well equipped with a huge mirror which didn’t mist up once. The hairdryer is kept in the bedroom and I have to say was extremely heavy compared to what I use at home, made me wish I’d taken my small portable one, but that’s a small personal niggle. The bed was huge but I have to admit I didn’t find it particularly comfortable, preferring something a little harder myself, same with the pillows, but I’m sure lots of people love that whole marshmallow thing, just not me. Fresh bottles of water were provided everyday. There is a safe and minibar in the room and we also had a Nespresso Coffee Machine and kettle in the room, both of which were very welcome. Turndown included chocolates on the pillow which is a nice touch. Two bathrobes and pairs of slippers were also provided in the wardrobe, which could be accessed from both the ensuit and the bedroom. I wondered why there was a curtain to draw across the room between the bed and the door but on the first night I realised it is to try and negate the very bright light coming from the switch which you can use to project a Do Not Disturb message on the wall outside the room. After the first night I gave up trying to block the light - very light sleeper - and just took the room key out of the slot! I would also say that I could hear an intermittent low humming noise in the room, which also disturbed my sleep at night although my husband couldn’t hear it at all. As the weather was freezing during our stay we chose to stay in one night and use Room Service. I had my reservations as I had not read good things and so it was with us. We ordered two light meals and 45 minutes later when we chased, there was no record of the order. Eventually one meal arrived, the second one not having made it onto the order again! Eventually we both ate and the meals were provided free of charge, so full marks for that, but how difficult is it to rustle up two sandwiches and fries (we got crisps in the end because, apparently the kitchen was closed, despite advertising 24 hour room service??). Breakfast was, on the whole, good. On our first morning there appeared to be two waitresses in the dining room, who merely showed us to a table and asked if we wanted juice and coffee. The buffet was typical continental with plenty of bread and croissants and some smoked salmon, ham and limited cheese selection. Our second morning was completely different with an obvious restaurant manager greeting us by name when we gave him our room number and then rolling off the list of cooked items available - one very happy husband! So, all in all, a good choice of hotel for stylish accommodation and location, being an easy 10 minute stroll into Town, either through the Gare Eurolille, through the Eurolille shopping mall or along a reasonably quiet road. We were very grateful to be so handy for the Eurostar station on our last day when the cold weather actually turned icy and made the short journey across the road fairly treacherous on icy cobblestones. We stayed in this hotel for a few days just before Christmas 2017, and were very impressed. Although our room was fairly small it was very well designed and didn't feel cramped. All of the usual amenities were there, and the hotel bar was very good; the feature floor-to-ceiling window was also impressive, although the view over the train station wasn't much to write home about. The casino, which is next door but basically part of the same complex, was a little disappointing, but is worth a visit to experience the true horror of their smoking booths (essentially non-air conditioned telephone boxes but you have to see it to believe its legal). However the downstairs bar was pretty good. The best features of the hotel were it's proximity to the Eurostar, which is about 200 yards away, and its staff, who really were fantastic and a great credit to the hotel's management. I would definitely recommend staying here, and would do myself if I ever went over to Lille in the future. Collapse

Once upon a time the hotel star rating meant something. Now they give stars out like confetti. My unfortunate stay at the “5 star” Hotel Barriere Lille was a case in point – the only 5 star attribute being price. With the outdoor temperature hovering around zero we wanted to keep our room at a reasonable temperate but the air conditioning didn’t work. When we initially reported this at the reception on our way out a helpful staff member told us that if the problem couldn’t be fixed they would move us to another room. When we returned the room was stone cold so we informed reception. They sent us a technician with a step ladder who measured the AC temperature by jamming a meat probe into ventilation slats. Then he gripped the sensor in his hand for 30 seconds and told us the temperate was fine (strange that) despite the room obviously being cold and the AC obviously not working as the fan did not turn on when the setting were changed. Back a reception we asked for the promised room change where an arrogant member of staff told us that there were no spare rooms but if we mentioned his name at the bar they would give us a hot drink free of charge. Truly outrageous. We insisted on seeing the manager and when she arrived her colleague again insisted there were no free rooms – something she presumably would trust him to tell her. When we refused to stay in the room another room miraculously became available – we were told this hadn’t been mentioned because the room was not being sold because it may suffer from noise coming from the theatre next door. This was another lie because the theatre was at ground level, and the replacement room was on the 5th floor, almost directly beneath our ice cave on the 6th floor, which miraculously was not deemed to be at risk from noise pollution. The replacement room was a more expensive suite and it is entirely obvious that they didn’t want to give it to us in case they could get a last minute booking at the full rate. They still tried to put us off taking it saying that the heating would be no better than our old room. We took the room and, quelle surprise, when we turned the AC on we could hear the fan and the room warmed up in no time. So we paid a 5 star rate to spend 1 night in an ice cave and 3 hours battling with lying staff in order to get a habitable replacement room for the next 2 nights. Obviously there was no apology or rate reduction. We were supposed to be grateful for eventually getting a bigger room (which we couldn’t care less about). There is something fundamentally wrong with this hotel in their attitude towards their customers. Lille has plenty of hotels and I’ve never stayed in any others so I can’t vouch for them but my advice would be to either choose cheaper accommodation (it won’t be any worse) or choose any other 4/5 star hotel. Whatever you do you should avoid Hotel Barriere Lille like the plague. Your money and time are worth more than this. Collapse
